Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Star Fleet Armada: What is Starmada?: Archive through June 04, 2010
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 14, 2009 - 01:58 pm: Edit

Starmada is a fleet-scale spaceshp game done by Daniel Kast at Majestic 12. We sought him out to make a deal in order to give star fleet to his customers and to provide our customers with a combat system even faster, simpler, and using bigger fleets than even FC.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 14, 2009 - 02:01 pm: Edit

We have a deal to print copies of the Starmada Admiral Core Rulebook and sell them into stores. No idea if that will be successful or just a random special order item, but the game deserves to be in distribution.

Daniel and I plan to see how this product worked in distribution and then decide about doing his four additonal starmada books this way.

And I thank you both for providing yet another option for the SFU. I'm really looking forward to this.

Are Starmada and VBAM a substitute for Rules Section V? (Since you have SFB{tactical}, FC{squadron & fleet}, and F&E{stategic})

Are these meant to be the operational level or is that in the future?

At Origins you said you would answer this when you knew what was up the SFU versions of Starmada and VBAM (I am glad I attended this year).

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, August 14, 2009 - 04:00 pm: Edit

I don't recall any such question at Origins, but neither of these are Module V (which is not a promise that Module V will ever be published; it remains a "potential product" or an "idea for a product").

This is the Stamdada cover. I hope Daniel doesn't mind my posting it since (technically) I didn't ask his permission and it is his cover, but I like it and so does Leanna.

Congrats on getting the product out, guys.

This is really exciting!

Well, it won't actually BE out for a couple of hours yet. First ones should come off the press by noon, being shipped to wholesalers by 4pm.

That's a beautiful cover on Klingon Armada. Glad to see it has Kzinti's and Tholians...!

Jeff, IIRC KA is meant to be a miniatures game, so the ship selection is designed around the squadron and border boxes originally released for use with Federation Commander. So to see what ships are included, you can download the FC master ship chart and look at the ships listed for Klingon Border and Klingon Attack.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 - 08:27 am: Edit

Email me and I'll get the list and post it.
I just don't have time right now.
I'm off to business school to get smart!

BTW, it could also use the KA/KB countersheets.

It could also use the Mega-hex countersheets as well.

I plan on purchasing copies at Archon.

By Jeff Johnson (Jeffro) on Thursday, September 24, 2009 - 08:46 am: Edit

Hmmm.... KB's on my wishlist... but I can play Klingon Armada with my SFB maps and counters, I figure.

I really want this! The question is... what else will I have to put on the cart while I'm ordering.... :D

It would be nice to see the other Starmada supplements available through ADB so you could order punched/non punched and loose leaf versions....Just my 2cents.
Congrats on getting this project done. It's awesome!!! I already ordred TWO copies.

I gotta talk to Dan about doing his other books.

Cool.

I got my copy of KA today - very nice!

I'm not sure when or where I'll get a chance to play it, though...

Another Klingon Armada tactic...

TAKE A HIT FOR THE TEAM
Lieutenant J.G. Terry O'Carroll, HMAS New South Wales

Seekers in Klingon Armada are different to drones in other Star Fleet Universe games in that they attack prematurely if they must end their movement in the same hex as an enemy ship or fighter flight (page 30 of Klingon Armada, final paragraph). So, when defending a unit against drone flights, careful movement can force enemy seekers to attack a ship (or better, flight of drones, fighters or suicide shuttles) and be destroyed in the process. You'll probably lose your ship, but it may be better than losing a battle station or a dreadnought! This is easiest when you are defending a base or other immobile unit because the seekers' movement will be very predictable. To counter this, the seeker user must not allow the seekers to bunch up too much, but that will make defense easier anyway.

My first session report for Romulan Armada is up:

Yay, an intro game featuring two non-Fed ships!

If you were thinking of counters, you could order the sets of countersheets from both Romulan Border and Romulan Attack - they more closely match the RMA ships than the set from Advanced Missions would.

The two sets of 1/2" counters would be 6 dollars US, with the two 1" sets another 6.

A Romulan Armada tactic... hopefully in time for Captain's Log #41!

PLASMA BOLTS ARE YOUR FRIEND

In the first place, plasma bolts are more accurate than plasma torpedoes. At short range they hit on 2 or better. At medium range, they hit on a 3 or better. These odds are better than that of a torpedo hit even if it can hit within a single turn! Granted, the torpedo to roll a number of dice to determine equal to its size minus the amount of phaser damage it has taken. But the increased IMP and DMG scores of plasma bolts mean that they get multiple chances to get past shields for each hit... and extra damage rolls for those that do penetrate. A plasma-R can potentially do 9 points of damage this way-- compared to a maximum of 8 if it is fired as a torpedo instead.

Plasma torpedoes can be run out and whittled down, but weapons that are destroyed by plasma bolts won't be pestering you during the time it would have taken a torpedo to travel. The improved chances of hitting and their respectable impact and damage values make plasma bolts a much better option under Starmada than they were in Star Fleet Battles.

Note: the above tactic has been revised and reposted into the "CL42 November 2010" forum.
