Gene: Calm down. I have it all on disk. But with 200 topics to rebuild, I can only do about six or eight a day.

Is SFWarlord still active? I saw that AoG is no longer over it and there has been no updates since September, so I was wondering if I can still get into the game?

If it is still up, is there another Omega game coming? And is the Revision 7.4 (5/20/94) rulebook still useable.

I believe Keith is till running SFW under licence/agreement. There have been quite a few crossover UK/US games.

The games are still going. In fact DH15 is about to begin in early January and Omega two is about 6 turns old. The rulebooks are still viable. The problem with the cross over games is that the US players can play in the Euro games but the Euros cannot play in the US ones, and frankly that sucks, as it brought a different mindset to our games here.

By David Alsford (Davidals) on Sunday, December 15, 2002 - 06:13 am: Edit

Agree it sucks as I would have signed up for Omega 2.

By gene malin (Privateer) on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 09:27 pm: Edit

David,
I would think that if Omega is not offered there then you should get to play in one here, since the games are still playtest variants. I know A1 has had some drops, I would get a hold of him.

Just an announcement to all you Warlord players. My friend, Gene Malin, has dropped from the warlord ranks after many years of play. Between getting knocked off this site, which he had been trying to redevelop into the official Warlord site in more then name, and getting constantly abused in the unmoderated site by nameless cowards, he has had enough. I know the Warlord community will miss him, some of the games were filled by him calling up numerous old players to get them to try another game.

My demise has been overdone, and I am back. Lets get this game back to the place it should be.

In the "Website Requests" topic (up at the top of the BBS) I have asked for input on ways to improve the web site. Please post any comments you have in that topic. You may now return to your previous discussion in this topic.

Other Website has A1 {Bruce } announcing that this is the last year of SFW. That he will close the game down. Please refer to www.agentsofgaming.com/sfw

Thank you Bruce for the many years that you have given us all in this game. And good luck to you in your future endeavors.

Question: if SFW were to continue would be still be interested?

Paul - You probably should go read A1 website on this. The game has been getting smaller for years. Maybe its fate is inherent to the lack of a future in PBM gaming.
Also the game needs some TLC.
A: The rule book needs completly redone.
it is effectivly outdated.
B: The software is outdated and needs re-written.
Also a new program for Omega needs written.
C: The game needs to be marketed to new people
D: When you are spending $6 a turn , and if you
live long enough to last late into the game
{Say atleast 24 turns}. that $144. I have
been in 3 games at once - This really adds
up {I spent $204 in Omega-1}

Ask Gene Malin or Randy or Art Delaura {SFW - aces all multi -winners} on what needs fixed, they have better grasp on the games than I do.
A1 did state that the game is not for sale, do not inquire about it. It has do to liscensing issues.

I think that the game is dead in its present form.
To bad - it really is a great game.

Paul,
What would be best place to have a discussion about fixing the rules? From what I have read so far (without actually having a copy of the rules) it seems to be a very interesting gaming system.

Also, when it comes to the software, I know that is it outdated in that it is a DOS program and that it does not include the Omega stuff. But is there any feature that is desparately needed?

By Gene Malin (Privateer) on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 03:15 pm: Edit

Paul,
The ship lists need immediate updating, and the races need some more goodies. The Roms especially need a goody like the D refit I asked A1 about years ago. There needs to be a limit on homeworld defenses to something like 5000 forts points, some games now have as much as 40,000 piled up on them which really skewed things. The biggest problems over the last few years is the lack of players, and an ancient rulebook that did not contain updated rules that only we vets knew, which further drove new players from the game.
Also, for some players, there was a lot of griping about service, while I had some glitches now and again, I only had one game turn lost, others had far more missing, and that also drove players away.
Anyway, I am not sure I wouldn't rather just see it die.

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 08:28 pm: Edit

Gene,
Assuming that there is an interest. I see no reason to "just let it die". I have read through the rulebook (well I am almost done). And I think it is great game. The rules are relatively simple. (Heck, try reading the F&E rules or SFB, straight through).

When it comes to losing players, I am hoping to reach some of those lost and get new players interested. That is why (as I said in the un-moderated board) that I would love to have an Origins event of some kind to increase the visibility.

When it comes to changes to the rules. Obviously we will want to playtest them first, before ading them officially to the rules.

When it comes to service, I will do my best to keep up with the players. Hopefully, I can use an electronic form submit orders with the ability to check the website to see if the orders are recieved. This is relatively cheap and it guarantees that I get them and the players knows that they are recieved.

I think a live Origins event would be spiffy but I really don't know how much time it takes a computer to process the turns. That could be something to look into. I seem to recall Bruce telling me that he would spend entire days processing warlord turns but I'm not sure if that was one game or several.

Somethign I'd like to see in "the next generation of SFU" (the new product lines to include Fed Commander and Klingon Invasion) a very simply exploration/combat game available on-line for those gamers who find warlord too intense. I'd like to see it doen by a web form or email. We'll talk more later.

Good to hear things are progressing on keeping the game alive

By Paul J. West (Psi) on Monday, January 31, 2005 - 04:08 pm: Edit

Paul
The Omega game is a great stand along game that introduces people to the Omega universe. If needs fixing, but it is not an impossible job. Bruce did a great job getting it started, and the differences are what most attracted me to Omega.
-----------------------------------------------
1: You play just 1 race - and that is your race
not 3 races - just 1. so if you are Hivers - you
concentrate on Fighters - Ymatrians - You attack.
etc.. You set up your play style to the Race - and actually learn something about that race.
------------------------------------------------
2: The Map really needs to wrap around. You should
not have a safe spot just because you are close to the edge.
--------------------------------------------------
3: The SFW-aide needs to be fixxed or a new program needs to be added so that the Omegans work. - Actually it is a DOS program so it needs re-vamped badly.
--------------------------------------------------
4: The 200 ship limit has to absolutly go! HIVERs
need to be able to have massive fleets.
--------------------------------------------------
5: The SFW computer needs re-programmed so that it
allows every race its racial features. Like NUCIANS are all immune to old-mine fields or
The MAESRON ALLIANCE have extra drones to compensate for the Tacyeon missles...etc
The Ymatrians were allowed to train to crew level 7..etc - But when we tried this, the program did not work - In fact I would have to fax Bruce to remind him of the racial rules for each race.
--------------------------------------------------
6: Some people actually get tired of just playing the ALpha races - We all love Klingons - Feds -Roms - Gorns ..etc But come on - variety is the spice of life. If we can get Omega working, then what next - Magellanic Cloud ? Triangulum universe ? possibilities are endless.
--------------------------------------------------

Just my $.02 worth

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Tuesday, February 01, 2005 - 04:07 pm: Edit

Paul,
1) Sounds like a historical variant. I assume that you are not allowed to buy from other races. Correct?
2) Definitely, something to look into. IIRC, the current historical variant allows this.
3) I want to either re-write this in Java or build a SFB Online plugin that does it. Is have a question, do you think people would prefer to stick with the entering of sector-hex positions or do you think they would like a click-n-drag interface to create the movement orders?
4) My understanding is that this is a software limit currently.
5) I would love to do this. But it will take sometime.
6) Agreed. I would love to include other "galaxies" / sectors in to this. May be even create our own. But we will have to see about the latter.

Origins

How many people will be making it to Origins? I will be there. I would really like to talk to people. I will probably do a presentation at the Q&A session for the Star Fleet Universe.
