Ken,
After thinking about it some more. I agree that having all sectors Wild would be good and using the nomad rule would be good too.
I am debating the removal of SG's.
By Ken Cole (Kencole) on Sunday, May 04, 2008 - 01:00 pm: Edit |
Paul,
Let me give you a true example of how the SG's could be bad in the "brawl".
In DH22 sector 57. Death Broccoli had a SG in 0714 that linked to 0509 (directly adjacent to the HO). Given this arrangement, I could have a fleet in sector 50 and in one move hit the HO, no warning.
Now, in DH22, there were buffer sectors, meaning that Death Broccoli could/should have seen my fleet in sector 50. Also DH22 was an event game, so that, if truly paranoid, Death Broccoli could/should have used an event to redirect the SG or even deactivate the hex. The fact that the SG got used against him was something that could have been avoided.
The proposed "Brawl" has no buffers and no requested events, hence SG's can be considerably more potent.

Ken,
Ok. You have convinced me. I will remove the SG.

Paul,
One more option I would like to see added is the ability to choose a sector special (as we did in DH23) on turn 1 (after we get our maps).
Sector Specials add an extra strategic element to the game that I'm finding interesting in DH23. The nomad rules de-emphasize home offices, this will give them back a little importance, as well as for allowing some interesting strategies. Besides, it's fun picking out a special and it's even more fun collecting a special when you take out a neighbor.

I think that would be cool too.

Quick SFW Aide Usage Tutorial.
This goes through how to grab the files from the report email and how to submit it.

Has anyone else had a problem using the Aide program with Vista. I just switched (no choice, so please don't waste time telling me I should have not changed), and I can't seem to get the new files to overwrite the old files.
By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Sunday, August 10, 2008 - 07:54 pm: Edit |
Ken,
Did you install it under C:\Program Files? If so, I would recommend try to re-install it in C:\ . Vista is being more secure and won't let anything write to that directory. The other solution is to change the rights sfwaide.exe to run as a the Adminstrator.

Thanks,
I'll try that, after I get this turn out. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and finally found that vista had created hidden files that it was using instead of the new ones. Once I deleted the hidden directory and reinstalled things worked ok.

Does anyone know if there is a limit on how many fortifications can be placed on a site? I seem to recall there being a limit of 4k or 5k, but I can't find any reference.
By Ike Baker (Cloudmasters) on Monday, December 15, 2008 - 08:06 am: Edit |
I don't think there is.
After someone died or dropped and fortified a site so the attacker, or there ally could not take it to get the sector bonus. I remember seeing someone saying there should be a limit.
No reason for one, some just feel safer in a BIG BACE )))

I checked the code and I do not see any limit on the fortications.

Paul F.
I have a friend interested in playing SFW, and he has talked me into playing.
When is the next Standard Game starting?
And when are Initial builds to be submitted?
Thanks.

Hi Guys
I got a few Cuss ships last turn, and they did not move this turn. I put them in the ship templates as DN CC CL DD FF, and added them to my ship list as FF-- (- being the mission).
Any ideas ?

Ike,
You probably have already thought of this stuff, but I'll just throw out some ideas:
When you get your turn, and unzip it, there are three files that you copy to the sfwaide directory. SHIPS###.D25 (where ### is your corp number), is your ship list. Assuming your copied this ere the ships not already in your ship movement lists?
I don't recall every having to manually add my cuss ships?
I think I get a note when I try to buy a cuss ship saying it's not in the library, but you can safely ignore that if your have the order correctly.
If you put them into your ship list manually, did you put them in the correct order (compared to your order sheet) ?. The software is not very bright and may get confused if the ships are not in the exact order. For instance, perhaps you built the cuss ship at a WG along with some other ships. The older ships (even if the were bought on the same turn) would appear in the ship list first, if they are not in the exact order it could have caused problems.
I also had some weirdness in my turn that I'm waiting for Paul to look into.

I Did not know you could transfer the files into the aid. I just hit the next turn button and delete any ships killed. This is the first time buying Cuss ships, and looked up a old newsletter that said how to add them.
I will try the file thing tonight.
Thanks

Ike,
There is a tutorial on the play-by-e-mail website, that explains all.
(link posted below). You want to copy the 3 files over every turn (replacing old ones) this is much easier than having to manually update the ships yourself.

Hi everyone, just signed up for the next game of Warlord. Downloaded and read through the rules but I've never played before. Any advice for a newbie? Any tips or things I should know before we start? Thanks.

Bill,
Welcome aboard.
Tips:
Prospect: If you do enough of it, it will become a significant part of your economy.
Build lots of ships. Two small ships can prospect and capture twice as much as one large ship. You will lose ships (low survivability on small ships, but will still end up ahead economically.
Be aggressive and unpredictable: Make your neighbors fight or deal. Slow and steady wins the race, except when all the racers are armed and shooting at each other. Resist the temptation to back track to pick up missed sites and prospecting, rather keep expanding your borders, and let a newly built ship grab that site.
Make deals. But only ones you can live with. You cannot win if everyone is out to get you, you need to establish safe borders.
Keep your deals. Otherwise no one will trust you.
Don't be afraid to fight. That fleet is meant be used and bloodied to achieve your goals. Don't wait until your fleet is perfect before sending it off to battle.
Be organized: Find a system of organizing all the information you will get, and make it useful. (ie I keep track of every battle report heard or shared by allies, sorted by sector and listed by date.)
Double and triple check everything. The game can be very complex in later turns, over a hundred ships, each moving and having different goals, it is easy for mistakes to slip in.
