I honestly wish that this was what I had STARTED with for the Orions, but I have no idea how I'd go up from this to make an X-ship if this were an ordinary CA....

I won't say "I LOVE THIS" but while I'm a purest when it comes to the Orion ships, I don't mind the rounded corners. It's a good compromise.

One question: what are the three light-blue/blue-grey squares along the wing root?? They remind me of Gorn shuttle hatches.

Random greeblies. They're not supposed to be anything in particular.

I think this latest Orion CX is fine, the "Strakes" look better. I don't like the random greeblies along the wing root.

Yeah, the wing root doors are just confusing and need to go away or at least turn into a greeble that doesn't look like doors.

Just checking, do the rear phasers clear those vertical turned nacelles? I'm not sure due to the angle of those new renders.

Plus, could there some sort of lengthwise greeble detail added to the nacelles to further differentiate them from standard nacelles?

By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Saturday, April 11, 2020 - 05:32 pm: Edit

Yes, the rear phasers clear the nacelles.

I do like the idea of a lengthwise greeblie, I'll take a poke at it.

As for the wing-root greeblies, I'll note that on the original CA I had one on top and two on the bottom... now it's 3 and 3. If you want them gone... well, I'll remove 'em and do something else.

Better, I prefer sharp angles though. I like the new engine orientation. Could the engines be a little longer. Maybe a third ring forward rather than the two. I agree with the not-door doors, how about triangular shapes with the bases meeting at the wingroot.

The engines have already been lengthened compared to the originals.

Really, it must be the beam to length ratio that is making them look small.

I think that I like this version better than the round one myself, TBH.

The line-art for the Orion Y-era stuff is pretty rounded, I may borrow it for that instead.

By AW Cookson (Awcookson) on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 - 12:19 pm: Edit

I very much dislike the 90' turn on the P/S engines. IMO, it throws off the likes of the ship and again looks like WYN creep.
I think the strakes, rounded edges, and revised engines are enough to set it apart as a 1X hull.

By Mark Hutton (Trynda1701) on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 - 01:54 pm: Edit

@AW Cookson:

But the engines aren't on downward struts like WYN ships.

I think that this does help further differentiate the Orion X-hulls. Even with the rounded edges and strakes, the basic Orion hulls are amongst the simplest SFU designs (and my favourite). The engine turn helps at tabletop distances, and isn't a drastic change engineering wise in-game. :)

Mark, I honestly have no idea what I was talking about when I posted that. I was misremembering something or had taken a sharp blow to the head or I don't know what.
Even my original objection to the center warp pod not being inset to the hull isn't valid.
It sounds like it must have been a heck of a party, I wish I could remember it. :p

AW Cookson:

It was probably that Saurian brandy the CAX brought in for you last shipment! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink! ;)

By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Friday, April 24, 2020 - 05:52 pm: Edit

(And, honestly, if you print in Versatile or HP plastic, the corners get rounded off by the print process anyway.... you only get sharp corners in Detail Plastic.)

Send to Jean.

SVC: Did Chris fix the fake doors over the wings?

He did something triangular.
