Side inquiry... I can think of half a dozen pseuo-Vulcan factors why, but did R Kerr ever give any reasons why he went with the curved struts as opposed to an over or under set like we see later?

AW: It lowers the nacelles to clear the balconies, while allowing the pylon roots to meet in a pleasing fashion with the long shuttle hangar structure.

Because straight would either (1) have to so straight out (putting the nacelles in the way of launch/land sequences from the balconies), or (2) drop the nacelles down through the "deck" (which would not be quite as visually appealing as having them meet the hangar flush with the deck.
