Nice

That is very nice.

By Steven Zamboni (Szamboni) on Saturday, May 23, 2020 - 08:11 pm: Edit

I tried building a mesh across the open spots on the side but it looked worse than just leaving it open. I think a metal grill trimmed and glued into place would look better than anything printers can make.

Aside from the addition of strakes, what - if any - adjustments might be made to reflect a would-be FRX based on this fleet repair dock design?

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Saturday, May 23, 2020 - 10:26 pm: Edit

Are the two blue items (first model) scaled BAMs??

By Steven Zamboni (Szamboni) on Sunday, May 24, 2020 - 03:03 am: Edit

Yes, the blue pods are base modules, assuming my math is right when scaling them up. (Kzinti in this case, the Fed version is less angular.)

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Sunday, May 24, 2020 - 07:38 pm: Edit

OK, but what about the top/bottom docking cradles (stored when not needed) ?? [Hmmm, two or four halves?] [Grin]

By Chuck Strong (Raider) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 01:32 pm: Edit

Is there a mounting position for a single module or is it assumed that mounting only one module will result in an asymmetrical configuration?

By Chuck Strong (Raider) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 01:37 pm: Edit

What is the largest unit in the SFU that can be docked into an FRD and will this model be able to actually be able to fit that model inside?

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 03:59 pm: Edit

Chuck, per Annex #7J "NOTES: Each module of a starbase can dock 26 points of ships. A Fleet Repair Dock can dock ships totaling up to 14 points."

Per Annex #3, Fed DN-based ships are 10-12 docking points. Fed CA-sized ships are 8 docking points.

I take it FRDs are fixed at the largest size, and don't adjust when there is only one smaller ship inside?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 04:40 pm: Edit

There was talk over in the Hydran FRD thread regarding whether or not a given fleet repair dock expands or contracts depending on the size of ship (or ships) docked within. But I'm not sure if there has been an official statement on this one way or another.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 05:14 pm: Edit

The problem I have with this thing is it's basically just a frame to wrap around a ship. But if you look at the SSD, there's a *bleep* ton of stuff in it: 52x Repair, 28x Cargo, 36x APR, 20x Hull, etc. Where does all that fit in this model????

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 07:45 pm: Edit

Hmmm, I think that the FRD should come with four stands to allow for 'flow-through' docking, ideally with the 'tabs' fitting into the lower corners …

By wayne douglas power (Wayne) on Monday, May 25, 2020 - 09:44 pm: Edit

All the Repair, Cargo, APR, Hull is part of the frame and detail I would think.

The 7000's will drive nicely thru. Yes you CAN have fries with that...

By Douglas Saldana (Dsal) on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 - 02:38 am: Edit

So at least 134 internals? So by volume it should mass larger than a cruiser, maybe almost as large as a dreadnought?

By Steven Zamboni (Szamboni) on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 - 04:01 am: Edit

The frame masses 2.76 times the mass of a Fed CA. It outweighs most of our battleship models.

We got internals to burn even if not counting all of the worker bees and loose cargo containers on the inside. Many of the pictures I've seen of docks has piles of loose stuff around with the internal scaffolding and cranes - it's not like everything has to be stacked neatly and tied down like it is with a regular ship.

(Some of that chonkiness is from making it printable in Versatile, and strong enough so it doesn't break or warp in Detail. Those side panels have some heft to them.)

By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 - 04:01 am: Edit

That depends. So far we've been assuming that a box is a box, except that Cargo boxes can count differently. I wouldn't be surprised if the same was true for Repair.

By Nick Samaras (Koogie) on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 - 12:47 pm: Edit

I wouldn't get too hung up on box counts. They should represent capability, not just size. I don't think early years/X-ships are meant to be much different in size from standard versions, but have more/less boxes to reflect inferior/superior abilities.

I like the Generic/Federation Fleet Repair Dock.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 - 12:36 pm: Edit

What is you changed the design of the side walls to give them more of a look that people actually live/work there? Maybe make them two or three times thicker and change the surface detail. You could also put some boxes mounted on the insides, where cargo might be stored and gangways extend to the ship in dock.

Stewart:

You may be onto something with the four stand holes? :)

Garth:

I took it that the flat area between where the modules attach were the crew areas. Your other ideas still sound good. :)

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 - 01:20 pm: Edit

I was trying to suggest something that doesn't radically change the top view. I know that Steve Z. is trying to match published clip-art as much as possible.

Would LOVE to add this mini to my collection and website. The current CX, not so much. But this? OH YEAH!
