More Borak ships
By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Saturday, June 20, 2020 - 04:11 pm: Edit |
There is a clearer look at sample art for a Borak ship on the preview PDF linked to on this Warehouse 23 product page. Its turret is placed at the back of the primary hull.
The Borak lean quite heavily on phasers. Those weapon mounts on the nacelle caps of the heavy cruiser and the destroyer are phaser cannons; they work kind of like gatlings, but can fire up to 3 phaser-2 shots instead of four phaser-3 shots. The turrets on larger Borak ships are equipped with megaphasers, which are close to a phaser-4 in terms of damage output, yet which are limited to mauler firing arcs - hence the need to rely on said turrets to provide greater tactical options. While their remote-controlled fighters double as suicide shuttles.
If it helps, the Borak have a set of playtest rules and Ship Cards for Federation Commander in Captain's Log #51, alongside the playtest Star Fleet Battles material in Module E3.
-----
The destroyer and frigate have an almost hybrid Lyran/Klingon look, particularly with the grilles on the destroyer's outer wing sections.
Could the angles on their primary hulls be smoothed out somewhat, to more closely match those on the heavy cruiser?

Looks like Paramount's revision of Klingon Fighters...
Size up 10 times.....

I was thinking the CA is reminiscent of the Romulan scout ship on the TNG episode.....

That image that Gary posted was one of the ones I was looking at.
It's odd, from that, I get the impression it's mainly a horizontal wing design.

The underwing mounted nacelles on the frigate seem odd relative to the wing tip mounted nacelles of the CA and DD. Have you considered putting them on the wing tips for fleet design consistency?

David: It looks like they are underslung to give the RS/LS phaser a place to mount. If the nacelle was merely grafted to the end of the 'wing tip', there'd be no place for that phaser.

I'm trying very hard to make each hull-type distinct from the others, and wing shape and arrangement is a part of that. (Consider the CA wing, which is straight out forward, while the DD wing bends back then forward and down.)
>> It's odd, from that, I get the impression it's mainly a horizontal wing design.
Yeah, that's one of the problems I'm dealing with, the line art shows -all- the ships with the same hull shape and the same wings and the same nacelles, just with different greeblies. I won't accept that as an artist and you as miniature buyers shouldn't accept it either.
As for the frigate nacelles, what I could do is put the "downturn" directly on the wingtip instead of tucking it under, so they just curve down at a steep angle with the phaser mount, instead of 'tucking' them under.

Chris, I'm very much in favor of distinct hulls, thank you. I think I would like the downturned FF instead of the tucked under FF.

I would have gathered most of the Borak would be more straight wing as well, mostly because the Mallaran of the Triangulum Galaxy ships are similar via SSD art, but the cover art definitively show wings that slope down. If and when they get released (I do have just about all of them modeled up) it could cause confusion.
I do like the smaller ships!

For comparison's sake, this file shows a pair of playtest Mallaran Empire SSDs, as mentioned above.

All of the Borak should (like all of the Klingons) look like they came out of the same shipyard. I am not sure these ships do that. They should all be flat or all be not-flat (and I prefer flat). If that means changing the DD and/or FF then get on with it.

The four Borak will be in tomorrow's release.

@Matthew Lawson: For the Mallaran do you have the nacelles at the wingtips or the roots? From the SSD I'd place them at the root myself, or close to, possibly above or below.
Debating what to paint these now that I have test prints. Part of me wants to do a pale blue.

For the Mallaran I did them on the back of the wings and one center on mounted aft dorsal. I believe that's how the one on the cover of the module looks...I think.

I ended up going with khaki, turquoise, and copper.

Not quite perfect yet but definitely getting there.
