Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Shapeways Project: Ships for Shapeways Approval: Z: WYN Flat Jumbo: Archive through March 29, 2019
By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, March 15, 2019 - 02:36 pm: Edit

Steve Z sent this in and I thought it too cool to not post. He apparently did it as a lark just to see how the lego blocks would fit. I'm curious if the inboard engines have forward clearance through the gaps between the pods, but maybe we'll get more views.

The offset of the middle pod looks about right, if tight …

By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Friday, March 15, 2019 - 08:00 pm: Edit

The engines are partially clear of the center pod as is, but the X-scaffolding between the pods is going to remain an issue even if the engines are tweaked to line up exactly with the gap.

On the other hand, the scaffolds are the size they are because of Shapeways, so whether the real supports on the ship have the mass to disrupt the drive is someone else's decision.

(The engines do see under the large crossbars, that was accounted for from the start.)

It is a nice looking WYN Jumbo (flat).

Looks Good. Leave it to the Wyn to Kitbash for real.

By jim howard (Noseybonk) on Saturday, March 16, 2019 - 05:30 am: Edit

the simple solution for the engines, is to mount them on the top and bottom of the outer two hulls. you could then for instance have all six, engines instead of just four.

It would block some rear firing arcs but I'd love to see one like that.

I'm ashamed to ask this (being the WYN fan I am), but I haven't heard of this ship? What does it do? What can it do? Obviously an AUX ship.

By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Saturday, March 16, 2019 - 09:43 pm: Edit

It's a thought experiment. The typical Jumbo freighter has two pods up and one pod down, I was just wondering what three across looked like.

The only WYN Jumbos thus far are the AuxBCS and AuxBCV, so I'm working on getting it to match the SSD for those ships. (Right now it has way too many weapons because it's using random pieces from other ships.)

Is there an ssd for this ship

Module R7

By Thomas Mathews (Turtle) on Sunday, March 17, 2019 - 05:30 am: Edit

Off the wall thought. What if the engines are attached to the supports near the front of the engine rather than the back?

By wayne douglas power (Wayne) on Sunday, March 17, 2019 - 05:59 am: Edit

The WYN AxBV, and WYN AxBS SSDs are in R7, slow overloaded (more powerful) ships.
The third Pod is normally attached to the bottom of an existing AxBC.

By Charles Chapel (Ctchapel) on Sunday, March 17, 2019 - 07:12 am: Edit

The center pod could have over/under engine mountings to get 6 total.

This is version 3 of the Flat Jumbo, configured as a BCS. I don't think this is workable as every phaser would require very strange firing arcs. But it's cool so here it is...

And this is version 4, configured as a BCH or BCV. I don't remember the SSD but does this thing really have just two engines?

I do not have a AxBCH but the AxBS and AxBV have two ten box engines.

By wayne douglas power (Wayne) on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 - 07:42 pm: Edit

Yes to the two ten box engines for the AxBS and AxBV (module R7), what module is the AxBCH or AxBCV in?

By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 - 08:38 pm: Edit

Two engines on all of the AuxBC variant SSDs. (Two engines on pretty much all of the freighter variants, for that matter.)

Two pairs of small engines was a "squint hard" liberty since I was trying to avoid creating a new Large Freighter rear end. Many of the Tholian SSDs have combined engines on the SSD as an example.

Unless I've missed something, the only 3-pod WYN are the BCS and BCV (or whatever acronyms they ended up with - my books are packed). There is no plain Jumbo warship; the non-carrier version is the standard Ballistic Pig.

By Chris Nasipak (Ecs05norway) on Thursday, March 21, 2019 - 09:26 pm: Edit

Hrm. What if you put two standard engines on the outboard side of each pod, at sixty degree angles?

It might look something like >O-O-O<

By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Thursday, March 21, 2019 - 09:57 pm: Edit

I built a Large Freighter with those angled engines back at the start of the Shapeways project, but never had to chance to slip it in for review. It definitely adds a bit more flexibility to some configurations.

By Steve Cain (Stevecain) on Friday, March 22, 2019 - 01:27 pm: Edit

NOT a fan of v3. V4 looks nice. Only change I can think of for it is very minor and pure cosmetic- thin horizontal accent line at 1/2 the height of the engine to add emphasis that it is double. Would also like to see the 60 degree option.

By jim howard (Noseybonk) on Friday, March 29, 2019 - 07:46 am: Edit

v3 needs the engines from top to bottom not sid to side. would look better like that.

By Steve Zamboni (Szamboni) on Friday, March 29, 2019 - 01:15 pm: Edit

V3 has the issue of what to do with the 360 phaser arcs. If they have to go on flak towers to clear the engines, the flat engines means the towers don't have to be quite as tall. (The easy way would just let us round up the 358-degree firing arcs, but we burned that bridge a long time ago.)

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, March 29, 2019 - 01:25 pm: Edit

I actually consider the flat jumbos to be a new kind of ship that doesn't match any SSD but defines it's own.
