Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Federation & Empire: F&E COMPUTER PROJECTS: F&E Computer Development: Archive through June 02, 2010

Greetings all.

My friend and I are back to F&E after many long years away from it.

I was reading about the VASSAL project as well as the F&EO and was curious if there was any updates since Nov...

On the VASSAL board I saw someone asking for a copy of the last update for the F&E VASSAL project as well and was also curious if there's a semi-beta out there to give a whirl...

Thanks for any replies.

"F&E by email" is the home of the Vassal F&E module here, Mark. The download is available at the top of that thread. Also, the entry for it at vassalengine.org has a direct link to the file here, and will note the current module version available.

First post in a while, but I have had a chance to work on this, this month and thought I would start trying to have regular updates.

One of the concepts that Paul and I talked about last year was the concept of a terrain piece. What this will enable us to do is to allow hexes to actually have data as well as display a graphic. That will allow us to show hex ownership, bases, and allow the bases to disappear when they are destroyed. It also will allow us to keep counters for each PDU on a planet without those counters actually cluttering the map. I have done some work the last couple of nights on this, including using a public domain photo of earth as a possible representation of a major planet.

I am trying to spend some time now to try to get this finished. I will try to keep you up to date and if you have any questions, fire away.

Scott, I'm really excited to see that progress. I would *love* to have an online F&E program built just for this purpose.

Will it have an off-line function so that you can play by email? I'm thinking of something like Cyberboard's GMV file that will show opponent moves.

By Paul Franz (Andromedan) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 03:49 pm: Edit

Ted,
Not initially. The client was not designed around the ability to work offline and submit orders via a file or uploading them to the site.

By Scott Burleson (Burl) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 10:14 pm: Edit

Ted,

One thing that you will be able to do is login and perform moves without your opponent present. We do log events that your opponent could see (in text, not graphically at least not in 1.0) once you shipped the game file to him. As I look at the log messages we are generating, I will keep this possible use of them in mind.

Hi Andromedan,

Was listening to the starfleet podcast and thought I caught something about a program for online F&E, just wondering what is the status of the client. Have been playing on vassel and wanted to see if we would soon have another option. Thanks,

Bill

I am working with Scott to get this out the door, ASAP.

Im using Vassal and a couple of times now Ive opened a saved game file to find a fleet marker completely empty.

And its not like Ive accidentally put them somewhere else.

Southern Reserve attack a Hydran SB, after the battle I put the pieces back in the marker box and save it.

Move on to another SB battle, save game.

Then when its time to retrograde I open up the Southern Reserve marker box and its empty.

This happened with Hydran pieces as well.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Im using Version 3.1.2 with Version 1.0 F&E.

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Friday, September 25, 2009 - 02:03 pm: Edit

Jason, 'F&E by Email' is where I usually post Vassal news and look for problem reports.

However, no, I've not seen this happen. I don't suppose you could send me a log where you do this, and see it happen?

And, while I've used F&E with versions of Vassal around the one you're using, the current version is 3.1.10, you may want to upgrade to that in case they fixed something that impacts this.

By Jason Langdon (Jaspar) on Friday, September 25, 2009 - 06:01 pm: Edit

I doubt I would have a log of the ships disappearing.

I will try upgrading to the latest version of Vassal and see if that fixes things.

I didnt post to the "F&E Email" section because I dont use Vassal via email so didnt think to post there. Sorry.

F&E Map For SFB Online Campaign Room

Not sure best place to put this, so trying here. Does anybody have the F&E Map made to work on the SFB Campaign room? If so, can someone email that to me?

Thanks,
Seth

We are getting very, very close to having enough done to have people really start playing it. I never know exactly what to write here, but I will answer what questions that I can.

What will the game be able to do on first release?

You will be able to add ships to the board, move them around, in real time. As you are moving, the board is letting you and your opponents know what you are moving, etc.

You will be able to conduct combat with your opponent. The battle board is smart in that it knows how to calculate the compot of your battle force and what a vbir roll and damage roll means, etc.

You will be able to watch any other players play their games and chat with them or watch their tactics.

Games can be saved and loaded.

There are many details in all of these categories, but I thought that would be a good place to start.

Scott, does the Battle Board know how to handle Stasis rolls?

By Scott Burleson (Burl) on Wednesday, June 02, 2010 - 07:08 am: Edit

No, not yet. There are many things that I intend to add after people start using this and that is one of them, but currently there is a place to stop in the battle process to do stasis, but nothing to actually automatically perform those rolls. There is a generic die roller, so you can handle the function, but you have to supply all of the "intelligence".

Try to load up the SFBOL client and sign in as demo. If you can do that you should be able to do the upcoming FEOL client.

By Scott Burleson (Burl) on Wednesday, June 02, 2010 - 12:28 pm: Edit

Mike answered that correctly. It is in Java, so you can run it via PC / Mac / Linux and certainly your specs are fine Michael.
