And...I solve the issue myself. After posting, I just went back and started clicking and pressing every button I could, and the answer is:

click+shift

Which highlights the overlay, allowing you to move or delete it.

Somehow, I hadn't tried that before.

I just downloaded the current version of Vassal. When I click to open the file here I get "Page not found Yahoo! Error." Is it something I'm doing? I tried to download it from the link on the Vassal page and got the same thing. Thanks. Played this game ftf years ago. Played other games through Vassal. Hoping to get some play in this way.

Sorry for the delay in replying, something happened to my account.

And, something has happened to the file download, I'm in contact with ADB about it.

Okay thank you I'm really up for a game. I've followed this game since 1986 and have only had two opportunities to play it.

By Keith Plymale (Zaarin7) on Thursday, October 17, 2013 - 11:23 am: Edit

The file download works again yay! On the other hand none of the scenarios are opening but that may be on my end I'll redo everything later.

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Thursday, October 17, 2013 - 10:26 pm: Edit

In what way are they 'not opening'? Are you getting any errors?

Also, note that the module can have a problem with the main map where it'll default to size of zero. Try opening a game, and if there's still no main map, pull bottom edge of the window down and see if it's just hidden away. If so, once you set the window up, it'll stay that way.

I mean I select the first GW scenario for play off line and it goes to setup and the panel opens up with all the control buttons across the top. It is full sized. All I see is "-Federation & Empire version 1.3.1" not quite half way down the left hand side.

I've used Vassal before for other games so I'm familiar with it.

James I got the game to open now I can start trying out the game. Looks great.

Keith--ask any questions you want about procedures that work on Vassal, and I'll give you all the info you want :-)

In playing how do folks handle econ. By paper? Is there an econ form on Vassal. I looked and did not see one. I have started Lyran deployment. If I had an opponent over Skype it would be just like FTF.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Saturday, October 19, 2013 - 08:04 pm: Edit

We do everything via e-mail (I realize that Vassal has the capacity for online connection, but we don't use it when playing); econ is done on paper and e-mailed back and forth and posted on the BBS; moves are done via e-mail; reactions are done via e-mail response. If both players are reasonably active, e-mail wise, you can play pretty quickly (relatively speaking).

Vassal doesn't have any economic functions; it is just the board and the counters.

By Keith Plymale (Zaarin7) on Saturday, October 19, 2013 - 11:45 pm: Edit

That is what I thought. As I said before I have played other games on Vassal twice and both times I talked to my opponent over Skype. It was just like FTF. I would highly recommend it at least for operational movement.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, October 20, 2013 - 08:57 am: Edit

Oh, sure--you can certainly use Skype or whatever, and if folks have matching schedules and blocks of time that work, I could imagine that it is very handy. PBEM works fine as well. Takes longer, but less organization is needed.

For comparative purposes only (as I like to see/hear how others do things).

In several of my games we have used IM software (AIM, YIM) to open a chat room or IM window while playing.

With AIM we used to be able to open a chat room. Anyone could join and there was a dice roll command that worked pretty well. This doesn't exist AFIK anymore.

YIM is what we use now a chat room could be opened but mainly the games I am in involve one other player. We chat back and forth and do all of our work there. The upside is if something happens to the map we have a record of everything. We use an alternate site die roller (Evil DM).

Video like Skype, Facetime, etc are faster to use but lack this little feature, the phone can also be used only lacking one (the point-at-the-map) feature.

Email is also what use to send files and econ back and forth.

I've noticed that the issue with the map starting at size zero happens every time I start a game by selecting a scenario from the drop down list prior to clicking the 'finish' button. Closing the scenario, and starting a new one from the menu seems to fix it.

Any news on updates?

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Thursday, May 22, 2014 - 10:41 pm: Edit

No... other than updating for the upcoming new version of Fighter Operations, the current module's in as good a shape as it's going to get.

There is a version 2.0 of the module I'd like to do, but one of the things I'd like to put in (proper SE counting) isn't possible, and the other (having fleet markers 'know' the values of the fleet boxes), I have yet to properly figure out. I need to get back on that, but I haven't been doing much with F&E lately, so motivation has been lacking.

I think Peter Dimitri has been looking for an opponent, maybe he'd play against you if you wanted a game James.

By John de Michele (Jdemichele) on Friday, May 23, 2014 - 11:06 am: Edit

@James:

Any chance of the LDR/Vudar/Seltorians/Paravians/Carnivon making it into the module? I know what you mean about not doing too much lately. I've been doing a solo GW campaign, but it's taken me three months to get to Turn 3A. Too many other things on my plate.

John.

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Friday, May 23, 2014 - 08:39 pm: Edit

I know of no Paravian or Carnivon SITs, so no.

I don't have CL#45, so no Seltorians.

LDR and Vudar have been things I've meant to do and never got around to. I've already got some LDR counters, so I might do an LDR extension while updating for the new FO.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Friday, May 23, 2014 - 09:41 pm: Edit

Paravians SIT is in CL 48.

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Friday, May 23, 2014 - 10:50 pm: Edit

...I have a lot of catching up to do on CLs.... (Of course, I've never been caught up.)

By John de Michele (Jdemichele) on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 - 12:18 pm: Edit

@James:

I understand, although I hope they'll make it in in the future. Thanks for all of the work you've put in so far.

John.

Anyone looking for a game of 2k, rather than 2k10? I have AO, CO, Carrier War.

Failing that, I guess I could spend the $20 and buy the 2k10 rules. But I wont be buying FO - I think there are only 1 or 2 significant changes.

Im in Australia so timezones could make any live game difficult, but on weekends I am sure I could be available for an hour or 2 here and there.

Ive played a lot on Vassal and would much prefer this to Cyberboard.

By Richard B. Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Tuesday, June 03, 2014 - 12:10 am: Edit

I'll play you F&E2010, no expansions if you like. Not the entire general war, rather the scenario (601.0) The Wind. I prefer PBEM, I can use Vassal if you don't want to use Cyberboard. I would like to play alliance, I'm already playing several game and would like to play the smaller side.
