Raids happened and moves are well under way.

The Alliance successfully raided 4 Lyran provinces (2 in the North and 2 in the South).

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti are attacking planet 1202 (where a battle line reacted), planet 1105, Klingon BATS 0906 and 1707, and there are currently some ships in movement around 1403 (i.e. the giant pile of ships and a BATS upgrade. The Coalition have 3 reserves in the area, but they are all terrible (3 or 4 small ships each). If all three of them go to one BATS, they might save it.

In Hydran space, the Hydrans are attacking some province raiders in the NW of Hydran space, have pinned all the ships at SB 0411 (about 30 SEQ on a side), and have captured the two southern Lyran provinces. There is one Klingon reserve that can reach one of the fights so far.

A few ships left to move.

AT4

Moves are done, reserves and have been deployed!

In Kzinti space, there are 5 fights; planet 1105 will see a Coalition FF explode and the planet get liberated; planet 1202 will see roughly even forces probably fight a round (the Coalition reacted in); 1503 is about the same as 1202. At Klingon BATS 1707, the Bats will certainly die, as it is undefended. At Klingon BATS 0906, we got an interesting fight between a sub-optimal Kzinti force (11 weird ships) and the BATS defended by a dozen FFs that reserved in. I'm not sure what the good move is here yet.

In Hydran space, there are 3 fights; an obvious pinning fight over SB 0411, and then two Hydran lines mugging province raiders. Mostly, the Hydrans managed to pin ships at 0411 so they could capture the two southern Lyran provinces (between this and 4 raids, the Lyrans are down $8 this next turn. Which isn't a lot. But it is something).

On to fighting!

Combat is over!

In Hydran space, only the expected happened. The Coalition didn't move in their reserves (as they weren't particularly impressive, and the Hydrans attacked in force in the one place a reserve could get), so the Hydrans killed a couple small ships, fled from a declined approach over SB 0411, and took no losses at all.

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti successfully killed Klingon BATS 1707, recaptured planets 1105 and 1202, and were repelled from BATS 0906. The Coalition cold only really defend one of their BATS with their mostly anemic reserves, and even at BATS 0902, it was a moderately close fights, even with the BATS factored in, but as the Coalition has a minor compot edge, a EW edge, and 8 points of damage it could soak on SIDS without losing any combat power, the Kzinti wisely opted out. At planet 1202, the Kzinti won the planet back, but lost a vital MEC by accident--they left a [CV, MEC, x] group on the line after losing the outer escort against a 67 compot opposition force, so it was really unlikely to lose the MEC (1 in 6, as the math shook out), but BIR rolled up, and the Klingons rolled a 5, getting the exactly 35% and 23 damage to whack the MEC. Sad. But 'cause of that, the Coalition ended up retreating, so I got back the planet and province, so that's something.

AT4

The turn is over!

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti liberated (and then promptly abandoned to their fate) planets 1105 and 1202, and successfully killed Klingon BATS 1707.

In Hydran space, the Hydrans harassed the Lyrans, capturing some provinces and contributing to the Lyrans being down 8EPs worth of production. They also killed a few province raiders.

The Kzinti have about 75 ships at the Capital; 15 ships (a motley group, at best) at planet 1001; 20 ships at SB 1704 (over and above the remains of the Marquis fleet), a few ships in 1801 (a couple of which are capable of leaving the hex), and then 4 ships in 1102 that had to be there to facilitate retrogrades. The Kzinti have 2 feeble reserves off map (One is 5 ships, one is 2 ships).

The Hydrans have about 50 ships in the Capital, 30 ships at SB 0215, a few scattered small groups of FFs scattered in the back field, and 2 modest reserves off map (one 9 ships, one 5 ships).

The Coalition have no ships in the raid pool, so no raids.

The Lyrans paid to upgrade the BATS in 1403 into a SB, and it doesn't look like the Kzinti will be able to do anything about that, unless the Coalition do something extra dumb, which seems very unlikely.

Moves have started. In Kzinti space, the Coalition have started rounding up liberated planets, and moved ships to planet 1001, which is defended by a Kzinti fleet, but it is a pretty lame Kzinti fleet (20 ships, but most of them are CVE/CLE/CL/FFs), but haven't attacked the Capital yet.

In Hydran space, here comes the flood. The Coalition have put about 90 ships into 0617 so far (where the Hydrans have about 50 ships currently), sent ships to attack planet 0718, BATS 0315, started putting ships on SB 0215 (the Hydrans have 37 SEQ here). The Coalition still have about 60 ships to move in the theatre.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Monday, April 06, 2020 - 07:59 am: Edit

CT5

Moves are done and reserves have gone in (for what good it is going to do).

In Kzinti space, 5 battle hexes. And equal number of Kzinti and Coalition SEQ in 1401 (about 120 on each side); planets 1105 and 1202 are being recaptured by lines big enough to dissuade the modest reserves from showing up; planet 1001 is under attack by a force that will certainly take it, but between the ships that were there and the reserves showing up, there is at least a fight; in hex 1701, a full battle line shows up to kill a FF that reacted in to try and help keep supply open between the Off Map and the Marquis (resulting in an overcommitment of forces to kill an FF).

In Hydran space, 6 battle hexes. There are about 130 Coalition ships in 0617, where the Hydrans have about 60 ships (once a reserve shows up from off map) and all their PDUs still (16 on Hydrax); SB 0215 is under attack by a clear pinning force; BATS 0315 under attack by a big enough force to kill it; planet 0416 by a line that will conquer it, and in hex 0313, there are 8 Lyrans fighting 9 Hydrans (but the Lyrans outgun the Hydrans still), where a weird reserve showed up to help out some province raiders.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Tuesday, April 07, 2020 - 01:03 pm: Edit

CT5

Combat is well underway.

In Hydran space, the Coalition have killed BATS 0315 and captured planet 0416 with minimal losses; they fought an approach round in front of SB 0215 (trading a DD and a cripple for a CU) before running away. On the edge of Lyran space, a few province raiders and a small, weird reserve fought a round and a pursuit, resulting in a dead HN and a few cripples on each side.

In Kzinti space, the Coalition captured planet 1001 over a couple rounds, losing a D7C and a DD, killing an FF in return (as well as the 2PDUs). They also killed an FF in hex 1701, and recaptured planets 1105 and 1202.

Still two capital assaults to run through, and planet 0718 (which will just be flattened, as it has no defenders).

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, April 08, 2020 - 09:19 pm: Edit

CT5

In the Kzinti capital, the Coalition spread out, killed the last PDU that wasn't on Kzintai, devastated all the planets that still needed devastating, and then left, having lost a few ships and taken some cripples. There was a feeble pursuit round, where neither side was capable of directing a ship.

In Hydran space, the Coalition have attacked the Hydran Capital in force, hitting all three systems on the first round. The Hydrans were capable of fielding a full line at each planet, although the third line was an unimpressive 75/5 over one of the minor planets.

Over Hydrax, the Hydrans had a 323/9 battle line (16PDU); BIR rolled up, and the Hydrans rolled a 5, doing 129 damage, which is likely to cripple the whole line and still blow up 5 or 6 ships. The Klingon did get to maul 4PDU, however. At the other two planets, damage was about even, and seems likely the Coalition will be killing PDUs, but it remains to be seen at press time.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, April 09, 2020 - 08:05 am: Edit

CT5

In R1 over Hydrax, the Klingons resolved the 129 damage by crippling a whole line from the C8 down, losing 12 fighters, and then self killing 4D5 and an F5S.

On R2, the Klingons had to burn through -24 points from dead fighters; the Hydrans picked low, BIR rolled down, both sides rolled a 2. After EW penalties, the Klingons managed to burn through 14 points of the -24 (leaving -10 for the next round), and took about 50 damage, which will kill fighters cripple a bunch of D5s.

CT5

Combat is over!

Over the Hydran capital, the Coaliiton stripped 2PDUs off of each of 2 minor planets, and 7PDUs off Hydrax (currently down to 9) before taking more damage than they wanted. The Hydrans pursued them out of the Capital, but dice rolled down, and they only got to kill a single crippled D7C (which, all things being equal, was fair).

Dice over the Hydran capital were almost completely identical (I think the Hydrans got a 2 where the Klingons got a 1 once, but other than that, the same numbers spread around), except that the big swing was a 5-1 over the first round at Hydrax; the Hydran damage dice over Hydrax for 3 rounds were 5, 2, 5; Klingons rolled 1, 2, 5. The pursuit saw BIR roll down, and then both sides rolled a 1, but the Hydrans had a -2 EW shift, so minimal damage.

In total at 0617, I lost 2PDU on each of 2 minor planets, and 7PDU (now at 9) on Hydrax.

Klingons lost D7C, 7D5, F5, F5S (mostly to self killing to resolve damage over Hydrax), and have crippled C8, 2D7C, 2D6M, 4D7, CC, 5D5, 8F5L, 3F5, 2F5S, D6D.

Elsewhere in Hydran space, the Coalition killed the last border BATS, captured planets 0416 and 0718, and kicked Hydrans out of Lyran space.

In Kzinti space, the Coalition cut the Marquis zone off from the main grid, captured planet 1001, and recaptured planets 1105 and 1202. And are finishing building a SB in hex 1403.

I took 300 damage over Hydrax while dealing out about 50.

Despite having about 1/3 the Compot.

I took an absolute pounding.

And the outer planets werent much nicer either.

13 or 14 ships dead, 30 crippled. For 11 PDU across 3 planets.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, April 09, 2020 - 12:34 pm: Edit

I mean, to be fair, you did do a total of 80 damage over those 3 rounds, but there was a lot of fighter death after mauling PDUs.

See, this is why I bit the bullet and stripped all the PDUs off of Hydrax on T4 in our last game :-)

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Thursday, April 09, 2020 - 05:03 pm: Edit

….to be fair - an assault over a Capital is about he only location your happy to be the Alliance.

A good roll gets to kill lots of stuff - and a bad roll doesn't.

The Coalition did kill 7 capital PDU's plus all the other PUD's - so economic damage wise, probably came out ahead?

Coming back on turn 6 will be a lot easier....

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, April 09, 2020 - 05:38 pm: Edit

Yeah, I have certainly cranked about the dice swing over a capital assault before, and I don't know what the solution is; like, if you roll a 6 as the defender in the first round over a capital assault, you make a whole line vaporize; if you roll a 1, you cripple a dozen ships that will get repaired eventually.

With the dice I had, I made the Coalition self kill, like, 10 ships. If I rolled low, the Coalition doesn't have to kill any ships at all. Which is a *significant* difference.

I mean, in the grand scheme, I think the Coalition is still doing fine. The Hydran capital will get captured, probably, T7; the Lyrans are going to finish building a SB 2 hexes from the Kzinti Capital (1403) this turn (unless Jason forgets to prevent me from killing it, but that seems real unlikely). Like, them building that SB has a momentum cost (i.e. the Hydrans live longer and do more damage), but it is still gonna be there, and make the Kzinti's life incredibly difficult for the forseeable future. So I think they are still doing fine, crushing damage over Hydrax an all.

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Friday, April 10, 2020 - 03:36 am: Edit

Good question if I may - what is the Coalition reason to build a SB in 1403?

Kzinti forces in 1401 can sneak around the top of the edge to cause havoc...

...and it doesn't stop stuff really in the Barony.

It's a secure Repair point - so it has value in that, but a FRD park in 1407 is just as safe and cheaper.

Only thing I can think of is that the Coalition have no intention 'at the moment' to capture 1401 - and it helps protect a wedge of Northern Klingon space?

(Getting a Coalition SB 1401 is much much more difficult, but far better I think).

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Friday, April 10, 2020 - 07:25 am: Edit

I wasn't involved in the decision making process (being the Kzinti and all), but I suspect it is that the Coalition did not plan to capture the Kzinti capital any time soon, and having a SB with a giant fleet on it 2 hexes from the Kzinti capital makes life very difficult for the Kzinti--the fleet there can react to the Home fleet doing pretty much anything, which can very much get in the way of retrograding and strategic moves and potentially result in 150 ships reacting into the Capital on the Kzinti turn.

I mean, yes, putting the SB in 1401 is better than putting it in 1403, but if the plan is "capture the Hydran capital, stonewall the Kzinti", having the SB in 1403 is better than, say, in 1407, in terms of keeping control of Kzinti space.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Friday, April 10, 2020 - 10:03 am: Edit

It was my plan, developed during discussion with Michael Calhoon some years ago.

First, it is victory points if it gets to the end of game. To deny this requires a starbase assault by the alliance.

It provides a DURABLE retrograde point, supply point and repair facility which does not HAVE to pin out the Kzinti to stay present, depending on myriad factors.

It allows the Coalition to hold 1202 1502 1504 1506, various provinces by having units there that also keep Kzinti units that are in 1401 (or offmap) from threatening the Klingon border. It also lets the Coalition hold 1401 (by keeping a fleet at 1403).

Units positioned at 1403 are able to strike at all of Kzinti space.

It is a good assembly point for auxiliary carriers to be used against the Kzinti, especially in early turns.

Starbases in enemy territory are victory points, so the key is to put them in GOOD locations in enemy territory, which in Kzinti space is probably 1403.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Saturday, April 11, 2020 - 08:55 am: Edit

CT5

The turn is over!

In Kzinti space, the Coalition have retrograded most ships in the area back to 1403 (with 166 SEQ worth of units that can react out of the hex, and a few more cripples there as well); they have 3 reserves totaling 32 ships at planet 1407; the Lyrans have a dozen ships and a 5 ship reserve at BATS 0504; there are numerous small groups of ships all over the map holding Kzinti space and planets.

In Hydran space, the Coalition have a billion ships (including about 20 cripples) in hex 0815 (along with a Lyran MB and numerous FRDs) and a mid sized Lyran reserve; another 10 cripples, a couple FRDs, and two Klingon reserves (16 total reserve ships) at BATS 1013; the Lyrans have 22 ships and a handful of cripples at SB 0411.

At press time, the Coalition have a total of 44 cripples on the map; I suspect that most, if not all of them, will be fixed at the start of the next turn.

Raids have happened and moves are underway.

In the Raid phase, the Alliance successfully raided 3 Lyran provinces and a Klingon province.

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti are currently attacking some province raiders in 0802 and a planet garrison at 1001 that a single, 5 ship Lyran reserve can reach either of, but the reserve will probably not save those hexes; they have a solid battle line attacking each of held planets 1202 and 1504, opposed by reaction forces of similar sizes and also 3 reserves can reach these. They also have a small group of ships, including a SAD (small Aux drone ship) on the offensive, in 1701 against a couple mall province raiders, to open supply between the off map zone and the Marquis Zone again. Reserves can't reach here.

In Hydran space, the Hydrans have large fleets attacking planet garrisons in 0416 and 0718, and then the 2nd Fleet from 0215 pinning the Lyran fleet at 0411, allowing a small group of ships to go kill BATS 0109 and capture 3 Southern Lyran provinces. The Coalition have 3 not particularly impressive reserves in the area that can reach the fights inside of Lyran space.

Ships still to move.

Moves are done, reserves have been deployed, combat is underway.

In Kzinti space, 5 battles. 3 against province raiders/planet garrisons that will see the Coalition lose FFs for no damage in return. Planets 1202 and 1504 have reserve support and reaction forces, and will probably see the Coalition hold those planets.

In Hydran space, no reserves deployed, and there are 4 battles. 2 against province raiders/planet garrisons that will also see FFs killed for no return damage; the Hydrans have a small force killing Lyran BATS 0109; and a pinning battle over SB 0411 that will probably result in a declined approach battle.

Combat is over!

Due to the overabundance of Coalition ships in Kzinti space, not a ton happened, but the Alliance got a good exchange of dead ships, so they don't feel terrible, and killed a BATS for little damage in return. So yaa!

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti cleared up a few provinces, liberated planet 1202, reopened supply to the Marquis Zone (for now), and got some extra ships to SB 1704 (after retrograding), including an LTT for possibly moving money stored there. And traded fighters and FFs for CWs.

In Hydran space, the Hydrans killed Lyran BATS 0109, re currently capturing 3 Lyran provinces (and with 3 raids, costing the Lyrans 9EPs next turn), and liberated planets 0416 and 0718.

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti have about 70 ships in their capital, about 36 ships including a solid 12 ship reserve in 1704, a few ships spread around some provinces and planet 1001, and a solid 12 ship reserve off map.

In Hydran space, the Hydrans have about 50 ships in their Capital, about 37 ships at SB 0215 (including a sketchy 8 ship reserve), a handful of FFs spread around the map, and another dubious 9 ship reserve off map. Both Hydran reserves are composed of a TR and then FFs.
