Well, as I'm the Hydrans, I'm not particularly keen on giving up that information at press time :-)

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 - 05:02 pm: Edit

So how many heavy hulls (CC, Pa, LGE etc) do the Hydrans have left?

Million Dollar Question

Would the Hydrans prefer to lose both 617 and 215 - but it costs the Coalition a lot, or hold one - at a cost for the Hydrans?

Um, Paul. I think that the "million dollar" question has been effectively asked and answered!

The Hydran fleet consists of 2xPAL, 2xLGE, 2xBT, 19 various CWs, 7 various CVs (CV/CVT/PGV/UH/LNHV; not counting the GRV which is still alive), 13xDE, 4 various TGs and PGS, and then about 85 various FFs. And then maybe 5 total Auxes.

By Douglas Lampert (Dlampert) on Thursday, October 15, 2020 - 04:50 pm: Edit

I'm not Peter (obviously), but if there are no defenses left in the capital, I'd move everything to the SB.

Get one last turn's builds in, and pull out to the SB where you can do some damage and stay on map. That fleet has plenty of firepower to hurt someone over a SB, and the coalition has to worry with your fleet on map, in supply, and with repair available.

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Thursday, October 15, 2020 - 05:19 pm: Edit

Douglas

I hear what your saying - but killing a SB is easy than capturing a Capital hex (even with no defences).

i.e. I can kill the SB in probably 9 rounds (8 x SIDS and kill the crippled SB with a Mauler)…. but to evict someone from a Capital hex, I have to force you to run.

By Kosta Michalopoulos (Kosmic) on Thursday, October 15, 2020 - 07:13 pm: Edit

Paul:

A capital without defenses is effectively just a big open-space battle. The Coalition would love if the Hydrans stuck around until their entire fleet was flaming wreckage. Considering the Hydrans are out of heavy cruisers, the Coalition has a significant advantage in combat potential, and will almost certainly win any attrition battle.

So yes, build whatever you can at the capital for one last time, then evacuate it and relocate to the SB, which at least provides some hope for an advantage in combat potential.

This is great! But I'm good.

Can't disagree...

…. but 'if' the Coalition over directs say, it might allow the Hydrans to hold their Capital for 1 more turn.

And that 1 turn might be critical to the Federation.

The War isn't Won or lost in Hydran space - it's Won or lost in Federation space (or lost in Tholian space...).

But Peter correctly wants us to move on.... so I will let them play how they want to play :)

The turn is over!

In Hydran space, most ships pulled back to 0815, including a lot of cripples meeting up with a lot of FRDs. The Lyrans have enough ships on SB 0411 to likely prevent it from being demolished. There are no reserves on the Hydran front.

In Kzinti space, the Coalition are protecting SB 1403 and SB 1509. There are 3 Lyran reserves in 1407 and 2 Klingon reserves at SB 1509.

On the Fed/Klingon front, the Klingons are defending their border BATS, have 2 reserves in 2517 and left about 50 ships holding planet 2106.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Romulans mostly pulled back to defend their border BATS but are holding planet 3711 with a few FFs, they have a large fleet on planet 3912, and have numerous small groups of FFs holding provinces. They have reserves in 3317 and 4015.

So you have reached Turn 10 and neither the Kzinti nor the Hydran capitals have fallen. Interesting.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, October 25, 2020 - 07:14 pm: Edit

The Kzinti capital is mostly unassilable--it has 20PDU and 2xSB.

The Hydran capital will probably get captured this upcoming Coalition turn.

The Coalition. They are taking their time.

By Kosta Michalopoulos (Kosmic) on Sunday, October 25, 2020 - 07:29 pm: Edit

Yeah, the Kzinti would just like the Coalition to try taking the capital at this point. No thanks.

As for the Hydrans, they did get one last turn of productions from their shipyard. As for what they will do next...hmmm.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, October 25, 2020 - 07:49 pm: Edit

The Hydran Capital has zero defenses at this point (the SB went down last turn). Seems likely the Coalition will push them out. They still have SB 0215. It is not that likely that they'll take out both the Capital and SB 0215 on the same turn.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Monday, October 26, 2020 - 02:41 am: Edit

I think the Coalition did kill all the Hydran CAs and CCs. Dunno about their CWs.

By Jason Langdon (Jaspar) on Monday, October 26, 2020 - 04:36 am: Edit

The Hydrans have 8xTR and 7xHR. Plus a fair few CW carriers, a couple of CV, some TG carriers, plus 2xPAL and 2xLGE.

I havent had much success taking out the Capital but Ive destroyed a LOT of big Hydran ships.

AT10

Raids have occurred and moves are well under way.

The Alliance raided 7 Coalition provinces, and were successful in 5 of them; a POL and 6IFF chased off raiders in two of them (they rolled 12's both times).

In Hydran space, there are no Coalition reserves; the Hydrans pinned the Lyrans over SB 0411, captured/contested 3 Lyran southern provinces, are going to liberate planets 0416 and 0718 likely killing a couple E4s in the process, and are beating up some Eastern province raiders.

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti have pinned the Coalition over SB 1403, will liberate planets 1001 and 1802, are killing some province raiders, and send a liberation force to planet 1504. The Coalition have numerous reserves on the Kzinti border, but some might be distracted by Fed actions, and the Lyrans can only really reach planet 1504 and SB 1403.

On the Fed/Klingon front, the Feds have sent a significant liberation force to planet 2106 (where there are about 50 Klingons currently), are attacking some province raiders, and have sent as many ships as they can muster to attack the 2xMB being set up just South of the Orion enclave. The Coalition have fewer ships there than the Feds do, but there are 3 reserves in range.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Feds seem to be avoiding pulling more Romulans into Fed space, and re just attacking some province raiders currently.

Still ships to move.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 - 06:49 pm: Edit

AT10

Moves are done, reserves have been deployed.

In Hydran space, 4 fights. 3 will see a small Coalition killed for dead fighters, one is a pinning action over SB 0411 which may or may not see an approach fight.

Kzinti front, 6 fights. 5 will see a small dead Coalition ship likely killed in exchange for fighters, one is a pinning action over SB 1403 which may or may not see an approach fight.

On the Fed/Klingon front, 4 fights. 2 will see a small dead Klingon likely for minimal damage in return. One is an attack against some MBs that are being set up that will likely fail due to 3 reserves showing up. One is a giant fight over planet 2106 which might be protracted.

On the Fed/Romulan front, 3 fights, all of which will likely see a small Romulan ship try and cloak evade.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - 09:11 am: Edit

AT10

Combat is well under way. In Hydran space, the Hydrans killed a handful of small Coalition ships, liberated planets 0416, 0718, and some provinces, and had a one round approach fight clash in front of SB 0411 that saw a small ship die on each side.

In Kzinti space, the Kzinti have liberated planets 1001, 1504, and 1802; liberated a bunch of planets. The Coalition didn't accept the approach over SB 1403, so the Kzinti just packed up and went home.

A handful of fights left; likely a big protected fight over planet 2106 with 70+ ships on each side (I think the Feds have an advantage here, both in terms of ships and fighters available to burn); the fight over the MBs being set up in 2916 (+/-; the hex right south of the Orion Enclave) might be exciting if the Feds try and push the fight; might be a bust with a single round of approach and fleeing. Remains to be seen. After that, just a handful of attacks on province raiders that will likely see numerous Snipes cloak evade.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Friday, October 30, 2020 - 03:33 pm: Edit

AT10

The fight over planet 2106 is raging; we are about 6 rounds in. There has been a lot of EW (the last round it was FED 9 EW to KLI 10 EW), the Feds are using drone bombardment (they have a single NCD). Compots haven't been that high (mid-80's mostly); both sides have lost a lot of small escorts (mostly ad-hocs), but are running out of full CV groups ro field. The Klingons are almost out of fighters while the Feds have plenty left. The Feds have many fewer cripples so far, but currently, there aren't that many cripples in total.

Unclear who will blink first.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, November 01, 2020 - 07:40 pm: Edit

AT10

After 8 rounds and a pursuit, the Feds held on to planet 2106. The Coalition killed a ship each round; the Feds stopped directing escorts after 3 or 4 rounds, and dropped damage the rest of the time, resulting in the Klingons killing 4 or 5 more hulls than the Feds. But after 8 rounds, the Klingons were long out of fighters, and had probably as man cripples as they wanted, and they left. The Feds pursued, killing a couple crippled F5s, losing another FF and a crippled CC in return.

A couple fights to go.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Monday, November 02, 2020 - 04:25 pm: Edit

AT10

Combat is over!

In Hydran space, the Hydrans liberated planets 0416 and 0718; captured some Lyran provinces, killed some province garrisons.

On the Kzinti front, the Kzinti liberated planets 1001, 1504, and 1802; killed some province garrisons.

On the Fed/Klingon front, the Feds liberated planet 2106, killed some province garrisons, and were quickly repulsed from an attack on a couple MB being set up in hex 2914.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Feds attacked some province raiders, the Romulans made statistically reasonable cloaked evasion rolls, and killed a couple small ships.

The overall situation seems to be that the Hydrans will probably lose their shipyard this turn; the Kzinti seem in reasonable shape with 2xSB and 20xPDU over their homeworld and can probably start offensive operations (but likely to a limited extent); the Feds control most of their space currently, but the Klingons and Romualans are making significant inroads, and it doesn't seem like the Feds will be going on an offensive any time soon.

Overall, this game sounds like it is going a little better for the Alliance than #2 (which I have insanely read most of while trying to decide if I wanted to get into this game myself late in the evenings after others are asleep). It's hard to tell what the relative casualties are overall, but the Coalition maybe hasn't been as unremittingly aggressive as in ANFSCD2.
