Hydran cruisers generally take 24-28 points to destroy.

Ways to preserve them generally include:

Having something else on the line that will get shot instead (ie PDUs over Hydrax).
Not putting them on the line.
Fighting lower compot lines.
Copious use of minus points (cripple a CW for -6 next round can help).
Having an EW advantage.
Make them into actual carrier escorts (ie MHK-Es).
And especially combinations of these.

It helps to have real carriers (enough for a full line) as well as cruisers, it can make it harder for the opponent to guess what you'll do.

However, generally the more full carriers you build, the fewer fighter heavy cruisers you can afford, so choose wisely.

CT4 is complete.

On the Hydran front, the Coalition destroyed BATS 0314, 0915, 1116, 1217, and 1219, and also SB 1017.

On the Kzinti front, the Coalition fought hard in the Capital and declared their clear intention to take 1401, taking a mess of cripples and some kills to destroy 11 PDUs over the shipyard.

Losses for the Coalition were not catastrophic, but the repair picture is bleak, and the Alliance will have opportunities to strike back on AT4 due to the masses of cripples and awkward pinning situation around 1401.

Hydran Killed: 5xBATS, SB 1017, 3xRN, KN, LM, SC,
Hydran Cripples: None.

Kzinti Killed: 11 PDU (Kzintai), BC, BF, CCx3
Kzinti Cripples: 3xCL, 3xDD, 4xFFK, 2xBC, FF, DF [19 EP]

Klingon Killed: 3xD6M, D6S, D7C, 2xE3A, 2xE4A, 3xF5L
Klingon Cripples: 11xE4A, 3xE4, 9xF5, 7xF5L, 12xD5, 2xD7C, D5S, CVT, TAV2, 2xD6M [63 EP]

Lyran Killed: SC, CLS, 3xDW
Lyran Cripples: 7xCW, 4xDW, 3xDD, CL, SAV, DWS, 2xFF, SC [28 EP].

The Lyrans are going to be doing most of the repairs; the Coalition obviously has not enough repair on the line, so virtually all of the Coalition strategic movement was used to pull cripples back to repair capacity in the [Lyran, obviously] backfield.

My plans for CT5 econ are no longer a thing, because I'm spending 91 EPs (actually, a little less, because I can't repair everything, even with strat, quite.) on repairs.

Worse, my BATS in 1001 is probably doomed. But it's a small price to pay for the shipyard. (I had planned to retreat to 1302, but decided on 1401 to shield the Klingon MB on 1504 instead (I can't pin the entire Kzinti fleet out of both, and I kind of forgot that if I'm in 1402, the Kzinti move from 1401-1301 is AWAY and doesn't trigger reaction. I can stop him retrograding on map, but I can't stop him getting there.)

The Coalition can pin the Kzinti out of 1203, 1504, and 1202 if they desire to [Ron Howard Voice: They do.].

On the Hydran front, the Lyrans withdrew to their remaining border BATS, but the Klingons (other than cripples) remain in Hydran space, ready to penetrate further on CT5.

AT4 was fairly uneventful. The Hydrans crippled a couple of FF's in neutral zone hexes on the Lyran border, taking no losses but retreating on their BATS to avoid being abroad on CT5.

The Kzinti retook Minor Planet 1001 and destroyed an MB, Tug, and in-progress BATS upgrade. The Coalition cut off the units from the Capital but did not oppose them (15 SEQ!) with the one available reserve (which consisted of a Klingon BT and a bunch of escorts on their way to meet their carriers).

~mid thirties EP is expensive to cut off a reinforced line from the capital, but we're both doing stupid stuff this game, and it meant there was no -other- mischief on AT4.

The Kzinti stay on 1001 for now accepting supply from off map. The Hydrans are defending SB's 0716 and 0416 as well as the Capital and 0215. The Old Colonies Fleet, activated when the Klingon West Fleet destroyed the eastern SB, is on 0416. The 2nd Fleet is on 0215. A detachment from the Home and Expeditionary Fleets, retitled the Iron Fleet because that's the best metal for warfare, I presume, is on 0716.

[We gave Trent an extra SB as a balance option and he gave it to the Hydrans (ages ago but I forgot to mention it until it became relevant). That was his choice of location, so far I think it was smart. He has Quest for Methane too.]

CT5 Economics

A lot changed twixt the cup and the lip this turn as the Klingons took it on the chin for repair purposes (and both empires retain a substantial backlog). As a result the Klingons abandoned a D5V upgrade and the Lyrans simplified a bit from their original intentions.

Only the essentials!

The only saving grace is that the Kzinti had to forego PDUs in the Capital, meaning that the Shipyard can fall this turn, probably, if the Coalition has the stomach for it...

Rough pin counts before movement:

1401 (Kzinti): 120
1001 (Kzinti): 25
0617 (Hydran): 93
0716 (Hydran): 17
0416 (Hydran): 14
0215 (Hydran): 16
1017 (Klingon): 73
0915, 1116, 1217, 1219 (Klingon): 49
1402 (Klingon): 96
1504 (Klingon): 5
1107 (Klingon): 12
1203 (Klingon): 6 [apart from cripples]
1203 (Lyran): 12 [apart from cripples]
1403 (Lyran): 43
1201 (Lyran): 25
0411 (Lyran): 8 [apart from cripples]
0212 (Lyran): 39

Thus:

The Kzinti have 145 SEQ against roughly 175 SEQ of uncrippled Coalition ships in the "North". Meanwhile, the Hydrans have 137 SEQ against about 180 SEQ of Coalition, plus another dozen ships that are Klingons repaired this turn on the battle stations of the 14-row and therefore out of range of combat this turn.

These counts are a bit biased by fighters, which obviously represent a decent portion of the Hydran and especially Kzinti numbers. But how I'm going to find 200-odd ships for the Federation in two turns, I do not know.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Sunday, January 03, 2021 - 01:27 am: Edit

I count 80ish more Coalition SEQs than Alliance.

You might gain more via repair on C6, I don't know how that looks.

You also gain your C6 and C7 production vs A5 and A6 so that's another gain on SEQs. Note the Klingons get the IWR starting on C7.

You also get the East Fleet which I assume isn't part of your total.

On C7 you can have local superiority of the area of your choice in the Federation with advance planning. You don't have to outnumber the whole Federation, just that part that can fight you.

Then once you get to C10 you get a big boost in numbers when the Romulans come in.

It's all about planning.

Coalition turn Five Combat:

There are eight combat hexes.

In 1401, the Coalition appears to have once again come to play, and judgment, rather than PDUs, will decide who keeps the capital this turn. The dice may well decide who gets to choose, however:
Kzinti (Home, Battle, 1st&2nd Reserve [pinned]) 125 SEQ
Klingon North Fleet: 106 ships + fighters
Lyran Home Fleet: 80 ships + fighters

The Coalition is at least threatening to retake 1001, as well, although the forces are fairly evenly matched: Kzinti (defending a planet popup but no other fixed defenses) Attack Fleet: 24 SEQ
Klingon NW Fleet: 21 SEQ + one lagging Lyran scout recently converted.

In the south, the Klingons have at great cost in resources pinned the Hydran reserves into the capital hex. However, 93 SEQ of pinning forces left them with a top-heavy attack force for 0716 (more about which below). Maybe the Klingons will strip a PDU from an outlying planet, but their plan appears to be retreating over the major planet next door and keeping the Hydran ships away from 0716...:
Hydrans: 93 SEQ
Klingons: 93 SEQ

In 0718, four Klingon E4s are hanging around waiting to see if, just by chance, a giant fleet shows up to help them devastate a planet.

In 0716, a Klingon fleet consisting almost entirely of scouts, maulers and D7's amounting to 37 ships is up against the 17 ship Hydran Iron Fleet. Probably the starbase should fall, but the Klingons don't have a lot of great ways to take damage.

At Starbase 0215, 16 Lyran ships are pinning the Hydran 2nd Fleet, about the same size including fighters, and probably will not press combat.

At BATS 0515, the Old Colonies Squadron has reacted from 0416 but is unlikely to save the BATS from 20 Lyran ships. Perhaps dice could change that.

In 0714, 6 Lyrans are on the undefended BATS.

The Klingon South Fleet [FRDs, tugs, transports, an MB still packed up for shipment, and a few stragglers] is in 1116, but doesn't look like it is going to stop there.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, January 09, 2021 - 12:04 am: Edit

CT5 Combat is underway!

In the capital, the Coalition fled a declined approach and retreated over 0718.

In 0718, the Coalition crushed the PDUs and devastated the planet, taking an F5S as a cripple and fighters in losses.

In 0215, the Coalition fled from a declined approach and retreated into 0315.

In 0514, the Coalition was met by the Hydran Old Colonies Squadron, which unfortunately decided to fight a round, with the result that the Coalition mauled a Pegasus scout and took a crippled CW plus fighters in return, then the Hydrans retreated and the BATS was destroyed for a further crippled SC.

Combat continues!

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, January 10, 2021 - 05:53 pm: Edit

CT5 Combat

As noted in the discussion thread, 0718 is back on the map for the Hydrans as the Klingons are in fact required to retreat to 0717.

On 1001, the sides traded and the Coalition retreated, leaving this in Kzinti control for now but pinning the ships.

In 1401, after a lot of low rolls from both sides, everyone started rolling 6's, so the Alliance got to play with 57 damage at one point and the Coalition has been regularly in the 30's. Keevarsh and Zamorla have been devastated without opposition (finally).

Combat continues.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 - 02:47 pm: Edit

Full update to follow, but the Kzinti have now rolled three consecutive 6's over Kzintai. The Coalition is racking up cripples really fast and may not choose to finish the Capitol hex this turn if this keeps up. As I said above, the dice might decide who has to choose whether or not to back off. Looks like it's the Coalition facing the tough decisions.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, January 16, 2021 - 03:23 pm: Edit

CT5 Combat Continues:

Total casualties [Hydran front only]

Lyran Cripples: CW, SC, 3xFF
Lyran Killed:

Hydran Cripples: 4xHN, CU
Hydran Killed: SAS, 2xBATS, Starbase 0716, 2xPGS

Klingon Cripples: AD5, F5E, 3xD7C, 3xD7
Klingon Killed:

12 total rounds: Coalition rolled a total of 38 (3.17) Alliance rolled 30 (2.5)

On the Kzinti front:

In 1001, the Klingons fight only one round over the planet, the Kzinti having too many "FF's to give" for a prolonged engagement to be feasible. [Klingon D5S killed, F5E crippled; Kzinti crippled FF, CL, BC.

In the Capital Hex, the Lyrans and Klingons have drained fighters (In the shipyard, the Kzinti are down to 12 available fighters (against 5 for the Coalition)) and virtually guaranteed an eventual capture. Whether they can hold on after a Kzinti repair phase is another matter entirely. Both sides have been playing for the long game, opportunistically directing big ships when able. Most of the outer planets are falling without a fight as the Kzinti don't want to fight the Klingon/Lyran heavy lines without signficant static defenses to even the odds.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, January 16, 2021 - 07:51 pm: Edit

[Then there was a power failure, and I was very glad I had taken good notes. Some moron ran into a power pole about a mile up the aptly named "Pole Line Road"...]

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, January 17, 2021 - 09:49 pm: Edit

Another interim update: We're still slogging through the capital; it's been tough with the power outage losing our progress, requiring us to reproduce everything from my notes, and of course the fact that it is a capital assault, in which I have been giving Trent as many opportunities as possible to fight me without a Starbase (which he has mostly been wise to decline). That has drug out the pain, which I feel a little bit bad about, but also proud that he saw through the ruse at age 11.

But up to now, the results are:

Kzinti
Cripples: CL, 2xDD, 5xFF, BF, 7xFFK, FH
Killed: 4xBF, SF, DNL

Lyran:
Cripples: 18xCW, 6xDW (or HDD), CC, 5xDD (or HFF), CL, SC
Killed: DN, CA

Klingon:
Cripples: 8xD5, 4xF5, 2xD6M, 3xE4a

All planets in the capital hex are devastated except Strikus (just a popup), Kuballus (PDUs destroyed but yet to be devastated) and Kzintai (PDUs destroyed, yet to be devastated). The shipyard Starbase is pristine, and has the only 12 remaining Kzinti fighters in the hex in its bays. The Kzinti still have a lot of ships, but have to decide how often they want to put CV groups - with no fighters - on the line to protect the shipyard.

[The Coalition has a total of 5 Klingon fighters left.]

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, January 18, 2021 - 08:12 pm: Edit

CT5 is (finally) over...

Kzintai has fallen, and the Kzinti retreat off-map to the Barony to repair their fleet and wait for the Federales to save them.

The Coalition sends their remaining CT4 cripples (Yes, remember they were short of repair capacity last turn, too!) to the backfield by strat or retrograde to make room for the CT5 cripples (and ultimately retrograde some of THOSE further back too; there is no question that this was a painful event which will have serious repercussions for the Coalition's economic potential on CT6&CT7.)

Casualties:

Kzinti:
Killed: DN, DNL, 4xBC, SF, 2xSAV, LAV, LAD, Starbase 1401.
Crippled: 3xCVE, 5xCV, 7xEFF, 3xFKE, 4xCLE, DDE, MEC, BC, BF, 6xCL, 5xDD, CLD, 2xSF, FH, 10xFF (142 repair)

Klingon:
Killed: D5S (no salvage)
Crippled: C5, 7xD7C, 6xD7, 3xE4A, 3xD6M, 5xF5, 6xF5L, 14xD5, D6D, 2xF5E, AD5. (162 repair)

Lyran:
Killed: DN, CA
Crippled: 4xDW, 2xHDD, 11xDD, 2xHFF, CLS, 4xSC, 2xDWS, 3xCC, 9xCL, 18xCW, 3xFF (160 repair)

Hydran:
Killed: SAS, 2xPGS, 2xBATS, Starbase 0716.
Crippled: 4xHN, CU

The Coalition has one turn to recover (and retake 1001) before it is time to hit the Federation and the Marquis province. The Kzinti chose to retreat offmap but they have plenty of time to move into the Marquis area if they prefer defending that to attempts at retaking the capital.

All told, more than half the collected northern battle strength of the Coalition is crippled right now, including every single non-specialty war cruiser they own, but there are still a fair number of DN's and cruisers in the capital hex along with a boatload of frigates, so winning an approach to the capital won't be easy for the Kzinti.

Operational Affairs
----------- -------

I attacked 3 places. The Kzinti attacked BATS 0504 and the Hydrans engaged in two open space battles. The 2 open space battles went well for me. I killed the bats with 4 ffs as cripples on my side and a few cripples on his side.

With the Kzintis I left an FF on Zamyan and moved my fleet that attacked the BATS in 0504 to the off map in retrograde. We thought this was necessary to preserve the retrograde path. Then I moved my FF that was keeping the supply line open into the off map too (since it was only moving two times; to a hex adjacent to off map and then off map).

In retrograde movement I took my Hydran fleets and messed with them a bit, leaving the majority of the fleet in the Capital and the remaining ships on SB 0215.

Comments from the Coalition peanut gallery:

In Hydran space, the two open space fights were actually really interesting.

In 0616, he took his entire main fleet and attacked my forward element in 0616, I think on the theory that he could trade fighters for hulls and get me another hex away from 0617 (creating pinning opportunities on CT6).

However, he underestimated both my fleet and my willingness to fight (I think he was counting on my not wanting more cripples after 1401). I announced BIR 4, and in keeping with the plan of trading fighters for cripples, he went BIR 1. We both rolled 6's - his shifted down - and I chose to direct cripple the PAL in formation, planning to kill it in pursuit. Trent fled, and we went to the pursuit round. However, while I remembered that maulers can't target ships in formation, I forgot the "...unless they are crippled." and so I didn't put a mauler on the line, rolled a 2, and missed killing the PAL by a point and a half. As a result, I took a bunch of cripples for almost nothing.

In the other OS battle, I was trying to protect an SAV (which I forgot about and left out in a forward fleet). So in the first round, we both directed big hulls, and I also self killed a CW to take minus points into the "slow retreat" round and avoid a "fast" pursuit round. This saved the SAV, and got me back to even on kills when I got another cruiser in the "slow retreat" round.

I defended the BATS with a reserve, but he had too much, and it retreated after only a couple of lines.

CT6 Operational movement
In the north and Coalition backfield:

The Lyrans and Klingons shuffle a bunch of cripples and recently repaired ships up and back on the Northern Front, and the Klingons move a bunch of ships to the Eastern border, presumably just because there are available BATS there that can perform repairs.

More relevantly, Joint Task Force Differently Abled (the Fire Squadron (Four Lyran FRDs) and Emperor's Fleet (two Klingon FRDs)) move from 1202 to 1504, with assorted cripples to be repaired. Four repaired CWs and two repaired D5's assist in the towing operation.

Even more relevantly, the Klingons and Lyrans each move about 20 SEQ to 1001, and the 62 SEQ Klingon Northern Fleet (plus some ships repaired this turn) assault the as yet untouched planet 1502.
Lyran BATS 1202 and Klingon BATS 1504 are up and running but not being upgraded this turn for reasons of being repair-poor.  In addition, each empire is setting up a MB over Kzintai.

In Hydran space:
17 SEQ and an admiral left the Hydran Front and moved to 1716 or thereabouts, just making sure everything is okay in the Southern Empire.

The Klingon FRDs, and a mobile base (not yet being set up) move to 0814.
The Lyran FRD on 0411 considers its options but finally "wimps out" and moves to BATS 0112, out of range of the Hydran Capital.

At BATS 0114 the Lyrans attack with six ships totaling 34 COMPOT.

At Starbase 0215 the Lyrans pin and attack with 45 SEQ, against 30 Hydrans; at press time it is unclear if the goal is capture or pinning, as the 45 includes a fair number of FFs.

In 0416 (and relevant to the capital) the Klingon West Fleet starts on 0616, and moves to 0517, giving the Hydrans a difficult choice between reacting (and causing problems for defense of the Capital and planet 0718) or not reacting, and leaving the starbase and planet at 0416 undefended. After counting ships and realizing the Hydrans would be pinned in open space, unable to react to the starbase and leaving "probably enough" Klingons to move on and do damage, Trent chose to stay home. The Klingon West Fleet moved en masse to 0416 rather than fanning out deeper into the Hydran backfield or trying the capital this turn.

[In reserve movement, the Kzinti defend 1502 (which has 4 PDUs) again sticking to their strategy of inflicting damage on the Coalition.]

Combat is next:

0114: Lyrans demolishing an undefended BATS.

0215: 45 SEQ of Lyrans, including an STT, 3 DN and a BT but also double digit FFs, against a pretty strong 30 SEQ of Hydrans.  The Hydrans can potentially hold the SB if they are willing to lose cruisers (and if the Lyrans aren't just keeping the Old Colonies Squadron off of 0416).

0416: Hydran SB and PDUs against 133 SEQ of Klingons.

1001: Undefended planet being attacked by 20 SEQ of Klingons and 20 of Lyrans.

1502: Two pretty decent Kzinti reserves and 4 PDU against about 65 SEQ of Klingons.  The planet will fall, but the Kzinti can trade fighters for cripples for a couple of rounds.

Combat has begun!

Both Kzinti reserves moved on map to contest 1504.

1001: The planet was redevastated and the RDF destroyed without losses.

1502:
Some idiot Klingon commander forgot that the first order of business was killing PDUs and directed a BC on the line in the first round; this meant the Kzinti COMPOT stayed high for a while... but the end result was okay for the Coalition because the Kzinti stuck around at least one round too long.

Losses:
Klingon: 42 fighters (that may be relevant) killed, C8, 2xD6M (shock), D5V, 2xAD5, F5E, F5L, F5S, 14xF5 crippled.
Kzinti: 4xPDU, BC, MEC, FKE, DD killed, 2xFF, SF, CV, MEC crippled.

Once again, the Kzinti drop damage and the Coalition focuses down hulls.

In the last round before pursuit, both sides rolled like crazy and got 45% damage; the Kzinti had to cripple a CV group (or do something else equally unfortunate) as there were two CV groups and not much else to take damage on.

Combat continues...

[Then both sides rolled 1's and 2's in pursuit, and the CV was saved!]
