Combat is complete on CT6.
In 0114, the BATS fell for fighters and two crippled FFs.
In 0215, the Lyrans fled a declined approach and retreated north.
In 0416, the Klingons destroyed the starbase and took the planet. The Klingons took several cripples.
Total losses:
Kzinti:
Killed:
BC, MEC, FKE, 4xPDU
Crippled:
SF, 2xFF,CV, MEC
Klingons:
Killed:
None
Crippled:
20xF5, F5L, 3xF5S, 2xD6M, C8
Lyran:
Killed:
None
Crippled:
2xFF
Hydran:
Killed: BATS, SB, 2xPDU
At this point, retrograde and strat movement for the Coalition is a nightmare; trying to find a combination of moves that gets the maximum number of cripples to repair is... like a sudoku puzzle on a 20x20 hex grid.
Overall, I think both sides' strategies are working. The Alliance has dropped a lot of damage, but this has finally resulted in missed builds on CT6 (and will again on CT7, almost certainly).
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 06, 2021 - 09:58 pm: Edit |
CT6 has been completed.
The Coalition have, by great effort, profligate use of their allowed strategic movement for last turn's cripples to shift them to backfield repair locations, etc., arrange to repair almost everything on CT7 . . . Unless I missed some, there are a few F5's and and F5S that will remain unrepaired at the FRD park (now at Klingon BATS 1504), and the rest of the Coalition fleet will be whole (less A6 losses) albeit often drastically out of position.
1502 is hosting the Klingon North Fleet, which is in range to react into 1401 and also 1504. The Lyrans have two decent reserves (one mostly FFs, but led by a DN, one very strong) in 1401. The Klingons have two reserves in 1504, only one of which is impressive (but the other has some nice new escorts and could be a useful addition to an old tech fleet).
The Kzinti are faced with the choice of staying off map and contesting 1401 when they repair enough ships, to moving to the Marquis starbase, which seems likely to face an assault.
In the south, the Hydrans lost planet 0416 and the "extra" starbase atop it, but leaving an E4 behind, the Klingons retrograded to 0814 and the FRD park, leaving the planet (mostly) to its fate.
The Lyrans have a very nice reserve in 0411 but it is the only Coalition reserve in the sector. They have a nice fleet on BATS 0212 (almost 50 ships) (which I called "0112" a couple of times above - sorry).
The Hydrans can probably clean up a lot of provinces (that are just defended by E4s) on AT6 if they want, but they can't take fights off starbases given that the Coalition is still up about 70 ships on the front.

Just because it's funny, here is a numerical list, by hex, of all the repairs anticipated on CT7. This is all fairly obvious, but to me, who has never seen this before, interesting.
It's fun to imagine the mechanical staff in BATS 2014 being like "Wait, there's a command cruiser crippled a solid YEAR ago, that has flown literally halfway across the octant since then, coming to us for repair? And NONE of those [expletives involving many consonants deleted] in the Northern Empire could deal with it?"

Alliance Turn 6 is quiet.
The Kzinti go around the horn and (asking every impulse if I want to react, with a big grin) curl around into the Marquis Starbase, choosing not to fight anything on the way, as there were 4 reserves, three of them big, in range of every target, abandoning province 1504 to its fate in the process.
The Hydrans liberate provinces 1118, 0917, and 0416, murdering three innocent FFs in the process, and then retire to 0617 and 0215, starcastling with two maximum reserves in the capital.
[The Alliance has clearly battened down the hatches the last few turns. Except for the foray to destroy BATS 0504, they are clearly waiting for Mama Fed to save them.]
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Friday, February 12, 2021 - 12:10 am: Edit |
Of course we are continuing on, so it isn't too critical (Trent is very excited about the Federales; he's been singing the chorus to "Pancho and Lefty"), but it's worth looking at the victory conditions. So as of AT6 end, the following appears to be the case with respect to victory conditions.
Kzinti Economy is 31. Kzintis have lost 7 BATS, 3 Starbases, and the Capital. (16 BATS equivalents total, plus the Capital)
Hydran Economy is 65. The Hydrans have lost 8 BATS and two Starbases, although one of those was placed due to balance factors. (14 BATS equivalents total)
Two Coalition BATS destroyed (but the Coalition have rebuilt them in Kzinti space).
However, this is an Alliance victory, because while the BATS numbers are more than sufficient, the Alliance economy snuck back over 90 when the Hydrans retook space on AT6.
Congratulations to Trent!

Once again, the Coalition is in terrible shape due to the number of repairs required to get the fleet back "up". However, the Kzinti capital coming "online" and the Romulan money at least prevent the Klingons having to entirely skip ship builds this turn. Next turn will (probably?) be a little easier, and allow at least a few discretionary expenditures.
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 13, 2021 - 12:21 am: Edit |
The Klingon invasion of the Federation has begun!
However, it has begun with a bit of a whimper, as the repair situation and some thoughtlessness on CT6 left fewer Klingon ships actually adjacent to the Federation than some might have preferred. So the Coalition is swarming the Marquis area, (putting 8 ships in every hex on the 18 row) dropping on each BATS on the 20 row (but leaving other BATS alone), throwing 24 ships (everything in range) at SB 2204 (4th Fleet) to partially pin some reserves, and sending 60-plus ships to the 3rd Fleet Starbase to pin the last reserve and presumably destroy the starbase.
Trent used the available part of one 4th Fleet reserve to open the way for the CVA reserve to get to 1704.
In Hydran space, the Coalition continues to look for small progress. The Lyrans land on 0215 in force, while the Klingons pin the two big reserves in 0617 out. The Klingons also move their FRDs and MB to 0615, and begin setup on the base. The Lyrans can't get there, so their tug and FRD end turn at 0513 where they can be screened from 0615.
The Lyrans have left DNs on 0411 and 0212 to lead reserves full of Strat moved ships.
As a result, we have a number of battle hexes, but not a tremendous number:
0215: 59 Lyran ships against 31 Hydrans. The Hydrans have more fighters, but certainly the Lyrans should have sufficient to take the hex and destroy the Starbase if they choose to.
0415: 8 Klingon F5's and F5S's recapture the planet, probably not for long.
0617: 119 Klingons pinning two big Hydran reserves (and the rest of the main Hydran fleet). Certainly the Klingons are short of force to take the capital, but they can certainly devastate a couple of planets if they want to accept the damage necessary to do so. Given the necessity of pinning Hydrans on AT7, they may not want too many cripples.
1704: 66 Klingons from the flagship North Fleet plus 38 Lyrans from their own main Foremost Fleet, against 74 Kzinti and 8 Feds (one of those eight is the CVA, though). An extra 20 ships is a lot, especially given that most of the Coalition frigates are away floating around border hexes killing BATS and pinning out other Feds. But this certainly qualifies as "close"; a fair amount of the Kzinti fleet is CV groups with varying escort quality.
1802: 8 Klingons on a BATS
1803: 8 Klingons on a minor planet, met by 8 Feds of much higher average quality.
1805: About 6 Klingons and 2 Lyran DD's being repaired nearby on a BATS.
2004: 8 Klingons on a BATS
2006: 6 Klingons (including a C5) on a BATS
2008: 10 Klingons on a BATS
2010: 9 Klingons on a BATS
2012: 9 Klingons on a BATS
2204: 24 Klingons of decent quality but without a good flagship, on a Starbase defended by about as many Feds. This is almost certainly a retreat-from-a-declined-approach, but you never know.
2211: 64 Klingons pinning a reserve and facing a total of 31 Feds protecting the 3rd Fleet Starbase.

1902: 2xD6, 5xE4 attacking a Kzinti BATS
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 13, 2021 - 07:22 pm: Edit |
Combat has begun on CT7.
In 0416, the Klingons (re)conquered the planet without incident.
In 0215, the Lyrans successfully destroyed a starbase, losing a mauler to direct damage and a small pile of cripples, but directing a couple of cruisers in the process.
In 0617, the Klingons fought an approach (trading cruisers due to a massive EW shift in the Klingons' favor) and retreated; the Hydran fleet in 0617 is really very scary.
In the north, the Coalition has blundered. By having the hex with the Federation reserve (1803) go first, they allowed that Battle Group to fighting retreat (because it is cut off from supply by Klingons in 2004) over 1802 and then 1902, increasing Coalition losses a bit. 1802 and 1902 were taken by the Coalition, but the order of operations was really screwed up, so the Coalition lost two E4's and five cripples, rather than not much. Klingon Captains are being assigned to penal ships as we speak.
Worse yet, this will allow the Federation to open supply to 1803, in turn allowing them to adopt Kzinti ships there... if I do 1902 first, and retreat off 1902 into 1802 (as I should have done anyway for tactical reasons, and which is the correct retreat direction), this doesn't happen and the SB assault is suddenly much more attractive.
So.
Some rethinking from the Klingons after the poorly led sets of 8 ships in 1802, 1803, and 1902 ruined the plan; and kudos to Trent for seeing this was possible before I did.
I did get to "Bakija" in 1803: 8 ships-half withdraw-two pretend to be waiting to be the next flagship - one of the last two fights and dies-so 7 ships can get away scot free.
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 13, 2021 - 09:27 pm: Edit |
Check all that about the North. I think we screwed up retreat priorities because 2004 is still a BATS and still on the map at the time 1803 was done, which I remembered when deciding on 1803 and then promptly forgot about.
[In our defense, the BATS counter was under a big pile of Klingons.]
[Fortunately, all we lose is a few 3-minute BATS engagements. And the south is fine; it's just the sequence starting with the retreat from 1803.]
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, February 15, 2021 - 04:39 pm: Edit |
After redoing the North, this has been a less bloody turn than might have been expected.
With the exception of BATS 1803 (saved by a Federation reserve), all of the BATS assaulted by the Coalition fell, Lyran BATS 1805 and 1902, and Federation BATS 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2213.
Starbase assaults were more troublesome. The Coalition declined to attack Starbase 2204 and Starbase 1704, due to inadequate ship count (if the Coalition had SIDSed 1704, they could easily lose the Kzinti capital). Starbase 2211 is no more, the Coalition taking a bunch of cripples and driving the Federation 3rd Fleet off the base (with a number of cripples of their own.)
As a result, the Federation has a turn to reinforce the 4th Fleet if they so choose.

The Coalition turn is over.
The Coalition retreats mostly out of Fed space to avoid losing a bunch of hulls stupidly, leaving an E4 in 2105 and small groups in 2008 and 2010. The Klingons have three big reserves, two in 1411 and one in 1502, and the Lyrans have three big reserves, in 0411, 0212, and 1202.
It isn't inconceivable that the Alliance could get into an FRD park or two this turn, but it seems unlikely they would be able to get back out again...

AT7 is over!
There were only two battle hexes, each of which involved intimidating 30 SEQ+ Alliance fleets attacking lone E4's disputing or garrisoning provinces (1015, 2105). Despite reserves in range, the Coalition let the E4s go, because the Alliance fleets were big enough...
[...and the Coalition belatedly realized that the Lyran ships in the Klingon reserves in 1502 could not enter Federation space! And if they did they would be out of supply! Which, you know, was bad. So rather than try a relatively even fight in which only the Federation had fighters in 2015, sacrificing F5s or DWs just to get there, the Coalition let the E4 get blown up and kept its reserves home. Also, see the Q&A for an interesting point regarding 203.732.]
[In Hydran space, we (kind of collectively, frankly, working through the various orders of operations without touching the map) figured out that there WAS a way for the Hydrans to hit the Klingon Mobile Base Setup and FRD park in 0615; however, all but about 10 of the Hydran SEQ would be pinned out, and Trent decided multiple pursuit rounds for the privilege of facing 100 COMPOT lines from the available Lyran reserves over the FRD park wasn't worth it, especially given the hazards involved in spending fighters before CT8...]
The Alliance seems bound and determined to only fight over Starbase-level defenses, which is seeing them get squeezed out of progressively more territory. However, they have been very successful at preserving their fleets.
The Federation has two strong reserves in 2204, the Kzinti have two strong reserves (in 1704, where they will undoubtedly be under attack anyway, but still), and the Hydrans have the Old Colonies Fleet sitting in 0216 blocking the way, and the main fleet in the capital, with a few ships on 0717.
