Operational movement has begun on CT8.
After being unambitious for a while, the Coalition appears to have put, or at least to be seriously considering putting, their big boy pants on this turn, with three starbases under attack and every Hydran hardpoint outside the capital under attack.
Combat hexes include:
0216: 33 SEQ of Hydrans (the Old Colonies Squadron) being pinned by Lyrans. It seems unlikely that the Hydrans will fight, as the Lyran force is more than 50% war cruisers repaired in the backfield on CT7.
0318: 10 pretty good Klingons against a BATS the Hydrans are pinned out of.
0519: 10 pretty good Klingons against a minor the Hydrans are pinned out of.
0617: 137 SEQ of Hydrans (Everything else, and including 28 SEQ of fighters...) against precisely the same number of Klingons and Lyrans. It looks like a pinning action (there are a lot of frigates on the Coalition side) but there is nothing stopping the Coalition from devastating some planets.
0718: 20ish very good Klingons (BT, D5/F5L's, plus scouts and a Mauler) against 7 Hydrans and PDUs.
1017,1117,1118: Klingons moving in to occupy the provinces. The Hydrans can probably come recapture some of this on AT8, but maybe that will be complicated.
1704: 169 Coalition ships against 8 Feds and 74 Kzinti (on a starbase)
1803: 8 Klingons against an undefended BATS.
1910: A bunch of ships repaired and held in the capital last turn in reserve take Sherman's Planet. No word if they're feeding the occupied locals quadrotriticalene.
2204: 66 Federation ships hold the Starbase, and 70-odd Klingons are attacking (enough to pin even with Starbase fighters and Depot fighters). Seems unlikely the Coalition is doing other than keeping two max reserves home here, but... you never know.
2612: A Federation reserve has been pinned here.
2716: 12 BATS fighters fighting a D5 and two F5s left behind by the Klingons on their way to the 7th Fleet Starbase to hold open supply.
2915: 37 Klingons attacking a poorly defended Starbase. There are 19 Feds, but no real carrier support.
Mostly just tugs and backfield moves left!

CT8 Reserve movement.
The only unpinned reserve on the map was the Federation 3rd [9 SEQ] in 2509. It moved to Starbase 2204, partially unpinning the reserves there and allowing 9 ships to go to 1803 to (almost certainly) save the BATS.
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, February 28, 2021 - 12:58 am: Edit |
CT8 Combat has begun:
In the order taken:
In 1803, the Federation reserve brutalized the D6+frigates who arrived, killing a couple and crippling more.
In 1704 the Coalition pushed the Alliance off the Marquis Starbase to kill it with dropped damage. The Alliance retreated as soon as its last fighters were dusted, after 8 "Real" rounds of combat where damage totals went as high as 50.
In 1910 Sherman's Planet was occupied by the Klingons.
In 2612 over one round of pinning + pursuit, the Coalition took a bunch of cripples to keep a reserve off the 7th Fleet Starbase.
In 2716 D5, 2xF5 fought off 12 BATS fighters to hold open the road home.
In 2915, a bloody fight left very few Klingon reserves unused in destroying the 7th Fleet Starbase, but destroy it (without SIDSing) they did, pushing off a small Federation fleet and crippling some Feds in the process.
In 0216, the Coalition directed two hulls and took a mess of cripples before the Hydrans retreated to 0117.
In 0318, the Klingons destroyed the BATS, and stayed for now, refusing retreat.
Combat continues...

Missed this last night:
In 2204 the Alliance declined approach and the Klingon pinning force retreated southwest.

Combat is over on CT8.
The Klingons destroy BATS 0318 and capture planets 0718 and 0519.
In 0617, the Hydrans fight an approach and trade an HR for a D6D, also getting a shocked-out STT Mauler for their trouble. The Coalition is still afraid of failing to get pin count as their BATS upgrades in 0615, and doesn't go in to trade cripples for planets.
Retrograde coming.
Total losses:
Kzinti:
Killed: CLD. TTS, Starbase 1704
Crippled: 2xBC, CVL, EFF, CLE, CC

Federation:
Killed: 2xSC, DE, Starbase 2915
Crippled:2xNCL, CC, 5xFF, FXP, 2xDD, DE, DN, 2xCL, CC
Dice were almost exactly even, Coalition average was 3.4333etc. and the Alliance, 3.53333etc. However, the details were a little bit more pro-Alliance, as the Coalition's worst rolls came in the first rounds over Starbases... (Coalition rolls 1,2 in the first two rounds in 1704 and 2,1 in 2915). Still, the dice didn't really change anything to speak of this turn.
Once again, the Coalition is buried in cripples, but they hope that at the end of this long, dark, tunnel of perpetual repair will be a bright meadow of pincount superiority!

Coalition Turn 8 has ended.
The Coalition is landing PDUs in 1001 and 1401 (Kzintai-Klingon) and upgrading BATS in 1401 (Lyran) and 0615 (Klingon). The FRD Park in 1504 has shifted south to 1507 to shelter in the lee of a Klingon fleet as it was too hard to pin the Alliance out of 1401,1502,1504, and also defend the Klingon BATS. The Coalition chose to defend (by fighting, not pinning) 1504 in order to make it easier to pin out of 1401 and 1507.
There is a middling Klingon reserve in 1401 and another middling Klingon reserve in 0615. There is also a small Klingon reserve in 1401.
There are middling Lyran reserves in 1202 and 0615.

Alliance Turn 8 Operational Movement has begun.
The Federation fleet on 1803 (17 SEQ) moves south, and since it involves a CVA, the Klingons react 17 ships out of 1807 to pin the higher-value ships in 1708.
The Feds in 2204 then drop themselves on 1807 and then every unpinned ship in 1807 (on the Federation side) moves to 1707, making their intentions to pick the Klingons' pocket, rather than fight, perfectly clear [They probably don't have the ships to take both BATS, so they are making no effort on 1807 and killing 1707 (and a crippled AD5 being repaired there) "for free".]
Fighters from BATS 2615 and 2816 conduct a strike on 2716 (D5,F5) and ships react in from 2815 (F5V,E4A).
Lots of ships left to move...
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, March 06, 2021 - 08:03 pm: Edit |
The Federation 10th Fleet (starting on BATS 2612, the remainders of the 3rd Fleet) attacks Klingon BATS 2215, defended by a few ships and a bunch of cripples.
The Hydrans massively overkill planet 0519 and slip the Old colonies Squadron into 0219 to reopen supply to the Offmap. They also attack planet 0718 with a strong force of carriers and FFs.
The Kzinti move to 1802, leave 6 FFs behind (as they must) and move to 1801, planning to retrograde offmap. The Klingon North Fleet reacts into 1802 to defend the planet and, well, let's be honest, kill two FFs.
Reserves are next.
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, March 06, 2021 - 08:20 pm: Edit |
All Coalition reserves on the Northern front moved to 1802. They were all one hex out of 1807 (which was intended to prevent them being pinned out of the capital, but you don't have to pin them if they can't get anywhere useful.)
All Coalition reserves on the Hydran front went to 0718, where they outgun and out EW the Hydrans, but will likely lose all those advantages, plus some, killing fighters rather than ships.
Combat Hexes are as follows:
0519: A mammoth Hydran fleet killing a lone, crippled, garrison duty F5S guarding the planet, who was utterly abandoned by the Klingon high command. Oh well.
0718: 22 pretty good Coalition against the IC, a UH, their escorts, a small pile of HN's, and 4 FCR's.
1802: 6 Kzinti FF's assaulting a planet defended by 8 Klingons and ambushed (ha!) by about 30 reacting Klingons and about 20 more reserve ships eager to move East before CT9.
1707: Big Federation and Coalition fleets, exactly even in pincount. The Klingons can probably hold the hex, but the Federation can make them bleed a bit if they feel like it.
1806: A small open space pinning fight where the Klingons will lose a couple of FF's to flee.
1807: Twenty pretty good Feds against a crippled AD5 and a BATS.
2215: A small, but quality Fed fleet against five small Klingons led by a D5, a bunch of cripples, and a BATS. The Klingons can probably hold on, but if so it may cost them hulls.
On to combat!
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, March 06, 2021 - 10:17 pm: Edit |
Combat has begun on Alliance Turn 8 and the Alliance is kicking.
In 1807, the Federation destroyed the BATS, taking a crippled FF.
In 1806, the Federation vaporized 3xE4, F5, taking only fighters. The Coalition would have had to put up 5 ships, so they put up a line and got blasted.
In 1707, the Federation directed down the BATS over two rounds, losing BT, NCL.
In 2215, the Federation was finally forced to retreat, but crippled the BATS.
In 2716, the Federation traded their BATS fighters for F5V fighters.
Overall, 2 BATS down, one crippled for the Klingons (can it do repairs? asking for a friend. I'll look it up.)
On to the Hydran front!
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, March 07, 2021 - 10:28 pm: Edit |
Combat is over on AT8.
In 0519, the Hydrans vaporized an F5S and occupied the planet, reopening supply to the off map with the help of the Old Colonies Squadron in 0219.
In 0718, the Hydrans inflicted a bunch of cripples, had the dice turn against them, and retreated back to the capital after a couple of outer escorts were directed on both sides. The Coalition had a mauler shock out again, and then had a mauler not work due to BIR=2. The Coalition reserves successfully defended 0718.
Retrograde is pending.
Total dice actually favored the Coalition in the end (a 5-to-1 last round over 0718 and a couple of bloodbaths in pinning battles making the difference) : Alliance 2.8 vs. Coalition 3.3 this turn. However, the Alliance was able to direct BATS when it needed to, so the dice were "good enough".

We're agreed that the Coalition is running somewhere above 50% for losing Maulers to shock so far this game, although we haven't tracked it exactly; it has been really brutal. They are still awesome though...

Note that crippled ships cannot garrison planets (508.23).

Is there something about Maulers always rolling poorly for shock? I can recall only one instance in my game where a Mauler was not directed and didn't shock. And we're on turn 6...
Crippled ships have a number of limitations that make them poor choices for holding your territory; they can't react, can't pin (unless there's two of them), and can't garrison planets. They work fine for holding a captured province in a pinch, but need to be replaced with a frigate or some similar small picket asap.
Then again if you were using a crippled scout you were probably desperate and might already know this...

Yes, that's right, both the Klingons and Lyrans end the turn 1 dice spot short of a province. However, the Klingons have rolled another 6 for the B10, giving them rolls of:
6,5,4,5,6,2,2(C8),6 = 36
By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, March 21, 2021 - 03:01 pm: Edit |
The Coalition has begun moving ships in Hydran space.
In 0118, a Lyran frigate is hanging out (having been replaced in province 0116 by an SC repaired at BATS 0212). It is lonely, but presumably there is some reason for it to be there.
In 0119, a very strong 20 SEQ of Klingons is sitting in the corner of the map looking menacing.
In 0219, about 40 SEQ of Lyrans are attacking the 30 SEQ Hydran Old Colonies Squadron.
In 0519, the large Hydran fleet that liberated the planet (about 50 ships, although a large proportion of them are HNs) is under assault by about the same number of Klingons, and the Klingons certainly have the edge in EW and COMPOT so it is just a matter of whether and how long the Hydrans want to fight.
In 0617, the Hydran capital has just been pinned by a joint Klingon-Lyran task force which certainly could attack some outer planets but clearly doesn't have the intention of even looking sideways at Hydrax (only a couple of CR 10 ships, heavy on the frigates, so the Coalition still hasn't come to play.
In 0615, the Klingons are upgrading a starbase.
In 0615, the Lyrans have a TGP acting as a supply tug. There are two Klingon and one Lyran FRD present as well.
Almost every Coalition ship in the theater has moved, except tugs and (notably) a D6M and D6S in 0615 which are presumably being held back to be part of a reserve fleet. There are also several cripples sitting in 0615, mostly F5's.
Six Klingons (2xD5,4xE4) are holding down Eastern Hydran space. 0416 has an E4T on it for now, and there are Klingon transports in 0716 and 0715 protected by the fleet's retrograde point in 0615.

Other Coalition ships able to move on the Hydran Front:
Klingon TG in 0615;
4xCW,DW in 0411.
In Northern Federation territory, the Klingons have started piling ships into 2204. The Federation has almost 100 ships and a lot of fighters defending the Starbase, so this could be a pinning action, or it could be a SIDS assault.
Lots of ships left to move; most of the Klingons on the Federation front are unmoved and all the Lyrans in Kzinti space and nearby are unmoved.
