Another topic that needs archive files.

By Ryan Opel (Feast) on Sunday, July 07, 2019 - 04:07 pm: Edit

Looked throuugh the files up to the Dec 2014 archive. Nothing really to save that I see.

Propose deletion of all up June 2014 archive.

OK so dumb question time.

Are there any instructions for how to install this and get it working/where to get the files from/etc? I looked through the old archives and saw nothing of the sort. It seems like you just kinda sorta gotta know where to get it all from type of thing. Is that the case?

Huh. I don't remember the information about that. James might chime in? Lemme see if I can poke around some...

The Vassal Engine download is at:

http://www.vassalengine.org/download.php

The F+E Module is at:

http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Federation_%26_Empire

By Rob Padilla (Zargan) on Tuesday, October 08, 2019 - 06:16 pm: Edit

So I guess it's just an install and it's all obvious from there? Is there a special way to import the module?

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, October 09, 2019 - 08:39 am: Edit

I don't actually remember. I'm pretty sure you just download the engine, click some things, it installs and opens, download the module, launch the engine and load the module?

It's been a while.

James!

So I just started using the F+E 2.0 Module in Vassal, and all seems solid, except that there don't seem to be group counters (i.e. 3xFF, 3xCW, whatever) any more.

I realize that most of the time, they aren't really necessary, but late in the war when there are fleets with scads and scards of FFs in them (like, 75+), having group counters (so you can easily count stacks of 15 instead of stacks of 5) is very handy.

Hi James,

Im also checking out 2.0 and noticed the following:

The Lyran Reserve dropdown had a space under Reserve 3. I clicked it to see what happens.

It crashed the game.

I had to kill the resource in my Task list for it to go away.

Cheers.

Don't click that. :)

I am am also new to Vassal, and am wondering how easy it is to add units from Captain's Log issues that are not part of the standard module (or is there an add-on for that.)
Also, I noticed triangular fighter factors don't seem to register. Am I doing something wrong, or just need to account in my head for these? Thanks all, especially James for spearheading the project.

Karl, check the extensions that were in the zip package. Most of what you want should be in the 'Extras' extension already. (Check the User Guide PDF in the zip to see what all the extensions are for.)

If there's anything more... you'll need counter graphics (make a copy of the Vassal module, rename the extension to '.zip', and look in the 'images' folder to find existing ones to modify), and then to edit the module itself to add in the new piece (find an existing similar one, copy it, then go fiddle with all the values...).

There's no fractional values in Vassal's tracking, so the triangle factors are generally dropped. However, if you bring up the properties on such a carrier, you'll find there's one empty box in the fighters line. You can click on this to fill it in, and since the tracking actually looks at that, the info will change. This can be handy if you have a pair of triangles you know will stick together (say, a pair Romulan WHs).

...I'll have that tip in the next version of the User Guide. >.<

So here is a thing.

In my current game on Vassal, the Kzinti have misplaced one of their DNs. When I look up the ship lists using the "Active Ships, by Empire" button, it clearly exists, and is listed as "offboard".

Ships that are listed as "offboard" are generally in Fleet Chart boxes, but off the color part and in the margins. Which often happens when a fleet is particularly large. But the problem is that Vassal doesn't differentiate between any of the "offboard" areas, so a unit that is listed as "offboard" could be in *any* Fleet Chart box that exists in the game. And more than that, it could be outside of the confines of the box (i.e. if you accidentally move a counter too far to the left of the Fleet Chart, it falls out of the window, you can't see it, and it is very difficult to retrieve, if not impossible).

I suspect that the DN was on the left most spot in a row of ships I was moving all at the same time, accidentally pushed it off the left side of the Fleet Chart, deselected the group of ships, and stranded it there. But because of the way that Vassal lists ships as "offboard", I can't even figure out which Fleet Chart it is in.

Ideas? Is there a magical way to retrieve missing counters like this? Thanks!

You can right-click on it in whichever ship list you're using and send it to salvage and then retrieve it from there. Or just delete it and make a new one; both will work.

Good enough. Thanks!

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Friday, February 19, 2021 - 04:46 pm: Edit

Delete it and make a new one is what I've done. Just don't do this with a fleet MARKER...

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Monday, February 22, 2021 - 01:31 am: Edit

Look under the markers section of the empire to find replacement fleet markers....

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 - 08:41 am: Edit

The main issue was that I had no idea that you could affect ships in the "Active Ships, by Empire" lists (or whichever ship list is open) by clicking on them. Once that was pointed out, this becomes way less of a thing to worry about :-)

Quick question.

Am I missing something, how do I turn off the sector borders?

By Sam Benner (Nucaranlaeg) on Saturday, March 06, 2021 - 09:45 am: Edit

Boundaries -> Sector Borders

By Andrew Patterson (Warhawktbc98) on Saturday, March 06, 2021 - 06:32 pm: Edit

I do that and nothing seems to change.

By Ryan Opel (Ryan) on Saturday, March 06, 2021 - 10:52 pm: Edit

It's supposed to work but I've never been able to get them to turn off.

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Sunday, March 21, 2021 - 12:38 pm: Edit

Are you using the regular map or the large map? The large map has it preprinted because the big transparency was eating people's systems. It only works on the regular map.

Now, I have gotten it to work on the large map, and that's one of the features for whenever I finally finish off v2.1.

Not a major issue but would it be possible to add the Squall scenario to the setup options in the module? Might be handy for people learning the game via Vassal

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 - 03:34 pm: Edit

That's really a limited version of The Wind, so I'd generally just recommend you load that up, delete all expansion ships for the few fleets you deal with, and then it should just be doing a few specified ship setups.
