Coalition operational movement has concluded and the Coalition has created nineteen combat hexes including those in Hydran space identified above. In Kzinti and Federation space, the Coalition have attacked the following, in rough order of movement (I don't remember exactly, but this is close):

In 2204, the Klingon North Fleet, reinforced back up to 116 ships/119 SEQ (drawn from the North Fleet in 1802 and the NE Fleet in 1707), is pinning all the Federation ships and potentially planning on SIDSing down the Starbase. The Federation can put up some brutal lines (CVA group, lots of cruisers) and has a lot more fighters (50) than the Coalition (12).

In 2103, about 20 very good Klingons are attacking an undefended BATS (they came from 1502 and could not get any deeper).

In 2106, about eight ships (including three carriers, all F5V's) are attacking an undefended minor planet, which will certainly fall.

In 2201, about eight ships including one carrier (this may come up again) are attacking an undefended BATS, which will probably be saved by Kzinti reserves if they are willing to be drawn out of supply, unless the Kzinti think they can save 2103...

In 2306, about eight ships including one carrier are attacking an undefended major planet, which will almost certainly fall.

In 2308, seven Klingons are attacking an undefended BATS.

In 2403, about eight ships including one carrier are attacking an undefended minor planet, which will certainly fall.

In 2414, five Klingons are attacking an undefended BATS.

In 2506, about eight ships including one carrier are attacking an undefended major planet, which will certainly fall.

In 2509, eight Klingons are attacking a poorly defended (two FF's) minor planet.

in 2609, A Klingon squadron is attacking an undefended BATS.

In 2610, a Klingon squadron is attacking a poorly defended minor planet.

In 2615, the Klingons are attacking an undefended BATS with five ships.

In 2715, the Klingons are attacking an undefended minor planet with the East Fleet (as diminished), about 15 ships.

In 2816, the Klingons are attacking an undefended BATS with six ships.

Meanwhile, almost forgotten, in 1803 the Lyrans are mobbing an undefended BATS with 20 ships capable of putting up about a 100 COMPOT line, because, well, they only have so many reserve markers and they have no supply past the 18 row (and aren't allowed in Federation territory for "political" reasons).

In addition, the Coalition has moved the Northern FRD park to 1805, six ships to the 2110/2111/2210 corner to hold the land, a mass of Lyrans into the Kzinti Capital, and a TGA+MB to Sherman's Planet (guarded by an SAV that was too far from the action to do anything). A solo D6S is currently holding Dimitris in 1802. A Klingon TGC has moved to BATS 2014 to repair the BATS on CT10.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, March 21, 2021 - 09:51 pm: Edit

Reserves are moving.

The Kzinti have moved both reserves (one is a cruiser and FFK's, the other has a bunch of CVE's in it repaired on AT8 and is led by a CV) to 2201, almost certainly saving the BATS.

The Federation moved its one mobile reserve (out of Orion space) to 2610, where they will almost certainly save the planet and probably cause the Klingons to immediately flee.

The other Federation reserves were pinned in 2204, and the Hydran reserves were both pinned in 0617, so combat is next.

119: The Klingons had a COMPOT edge, and the Old Colonies Squadron was nearly out of fighters, but had the better scout, and by putting an SC on the line got a 1 shift. The Klingons mauled an LN and the Hydrans self killed an HN to avoid pursuit, directing an F5L in return:

In Hydran space, the Coalition killed some hulls, lost some hulls, and got out after devastating one minor in the Capital to retrograde and defend the Starbase upgrade in 0615 this turn. The dice were pretty friendly to the Alliance in Hydran space: 6-4-5-4-2-1-4 for the Alliance (26/7) vs. 4-1-1-5-4-5-1 (21/7 for the Coalition).

In Northern Fed space, the Coalition was chased out of 2201 and 2204, and captured/destroyed 2103, 2403, 2106, and 2609, mostly trading fighters and a few cripples (although in the pinning battle in 2204, the Coalition lost D6D for a Federation CC).

[The Coalition would have been SIDSing against 140-point lines in 2204; the Federation has a huge fleet there, and the Coalition had only one DN.]o

Lots of combat left to go.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Thursday, April 08, 2021 - 02:12 pm: Edit

So far, the casualties (Including 2610, not shown above, where a big Federation reserve stomped some Klingons who were 7 hexes from supply, being very clever about retreating, and killed ships for which no salvage will be possible):

Federation:
Killed: APT,CC,BATS,4xPDU
Crippled: None

Hydran:
Killed: 5xCU,2xLN,HN,HR,2xDG
Crippled: None.

Kzinti: None (except a few fighters)

Lyran:
Killed: DWE,CC,[and CW no salvage]
Crippled:CW

Klingon:
Killed: F5L,2xD6D,D7,2xE4A,E4[and 2xE4a,F5,E4 no salvage]
Crippled:E4,2xF5

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Friday, April 09, 2021 - 02:36 am: Edit

No spreadsheets for this, as it is just stomping BATS and planets, with minimal to no opposition:

2306: Major planet goes down for 2 crippled AD5's, a crippled E4, and a dead E4

2308: BATS (and F14 Depot) goes down for dead F5,E4.

2509: Minor planet devastated for crippled E4

2414: BATS destroyed for crippled 2xF5,D5

New Klingon totals:

Klingon:
Killed: F5L,F5,2xD6D,D7,2xE4A,3xE4
[and 2xE4a,F5,E4 no salvage]
Crippled:3xE4,4xF5,D5,2xAD5

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, April 11, 2021 - 01:13 am: Edit

In 2715, the Coalition devastates the planet for fighters.

In 2816, the Coalition destroys a BATS but gets an E4A killed.

In 2615, the Klingon commander realized he had an insufficient force, fought anyway, and earned a "glorious" victory in true Klingon fashion, feasting in the memory of the two dead E4's crews and the casualties on the crippled F5 being towed alongside.

[I did an awful job setting up BATS fights. You forget a ship or two and suddenly it's painful and dangerous.]

Final Casualties CT9:

Federation:
Killed: APT,CC,5xBATS,12xPDU (1 Maj, 4 Min devastated)
Crippled: None

Hydran:
Killed: 5xCU,2xLN,HN,HR,2xDG
Crippled: None.

Kzinti: BATS (and a few fighters)

Lyran:
Killed: DWE,CC[and CW no salvage]
Crippled: CW

Klingon:
Killed: F5L,2xD6D,D7,3xE4A,5xE4[and 2xE4a,F5,E4 no salvage]
Crippled:3xE4,5xF5, D5, 2xAD5.

CT9 is over.

The Klingons maintain a presence in Federation space, covered by two strong reserves in 1802 and one in 2216. The fourth marker is in 0615.

The Lyrans have one reserve each in 1401, 1407, and 0615.

All the reserves are 11-12 ships.

The Klingon North Fleet declined retrograde, instead sitting a hex away from the Federation 4th Fleet (at present a majority of the Federation's naval strength on the map) and daring them to step off.

The Klingons have devastated and captured 5 planets, and control nine Federation provinces, disputing control of three more.

Hydran Econ AT9

Bit complicated because of two grids (off map and capital, both main grids.)

Hydran exploration is 104+14=118

In the capital, the Hydrans build RN, 10xCU, 2xHN and convert LN to LNH.

In the off map, they build FCR and convert LN to LNH.

They end with .775 EP in the capital and 39.5 in the off map grid, waiting to be repatriated.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 - 11:56 pm: Edit

Kzinti Econ AT9

The Kzinti spend 20 on repairs, repairing CLE, CL, 2xBC, CC, CVL, EFF, 8xFF.

Kzinti exploration is 80+3=83 (yes, three 1's).

The Kzinti spend 15 on their replacement shipyard and end with 0 EP saved.

Alliance Raids

The Alliance raided province 0115, crippling the SC on guard and disrupting the Lyran capture.

The Alliance raided weakly held planet 2715, rolling poorly and failing to cripple the defender, but disrupting income anyway.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, April 17, 2021 - 09:09 pm: Edit

The Alliance has created fourteen combat hexes across space - a clear record for an Alliance turn - and there will be a lot of EPs returning to the Alliance column this turn.

In 0118, 12 Fighters from offmap are attacking a lonely Lyran FF (it was there only due to some arcane thoughts about supply, and is paying the price for being complicated).

In 0212, the Hydran Old Colonies Squadron is attacking a Lyran BATS.

In 0214, A Hydran FF is attacking a crippled Lyran SC, which will reconquer the province if successful.

In 0219, 23 really nice Coalition ships are fighting 52 Hydrans, almost all of which are FF's, to the point where COMPOT isn't that far from equal. Still, the Coalition probably will have little stomach for a fight.

In 0718, 2xD6 and 6xE4 are getting mobbed by a lot of Hydrans, including the IC.

In 1017, the Hydrans are attacking two Klingons, and were met by four more Klingons reacting in (so they didn't get caught on their own), where the Klingons will inevitably feed an FF to flee.

In 1401, the Kzinti Home Fleet [80 ships and 75 fighters] is invading the Capital, held by 87 Lyrans and 30 fighters, plus defenses, which include MB (Klingon), 2 PDU (Klingon), and BATS (Upgrading to SB, Lyran).

In 1902, sixteen out of supply Kzinti have moved back toward home and been jumped by 15 very nice Klingons. They can retreat into supply and then presumably retrograde, but are out of supply for combat.

In 2403, four weak Klingons have been jumped by a Federation CC and frigates.

In 2306, four Klingons including a D5V have been jumped by a Federation CC and frigates.

In 2308, 9 Feds led by a DNL are up against 7 Klingons that, well, aren't, including three that reacted in to avoid getting caught on their own later.

In 2110, 6 Klingons have reacted in to meet 23 Feds, and will no doubt feed a frigate to flee.

In 2414, a D7C is under attack by three Federation FF's.

BATS 2416 is under assault by 38 Feds and defended by 16 pretty good Klingons, who aren't going to be enough even if the Federation doesn't just direct the BATS and walk.

Reserves have moved:

One Lyran and one Klingon reserve, from 0615, head to 0212.

Two Lyran reserves are in 1401 (one didn't move and remains there, the other came in from 1407.)

One Klingon reserve in 1802 goes to 2403, and will save the planet.

One Klingon reserve in 1802 goes to 2306, and will save the planet.

The final Klingon reserve moves from 2216 to 2414, to save the D7C, and give the Federation some issues with retrograde movement. It probably could not save the BATS, and could definitely do some good here.

Combat is next!

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 08:30 am: Edit

Not to be Debbie Downer, but bases/ships off map can't send fighters on independent strikes (319.13).

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 02:44 pm: Edit

Combat has begun on AT9.

Trent chose to take his medicine first, running the two hexes where small Federation forces were ambushed by Klingon reserves:

24031Coalition4634210237.50%23.6252 dead FF
Alliance010-14645.00%4.5Crippled F5

Alliance039-11535.00%13.65E4A (14)Mauler Shocks Out

The Feds had to kill some ships to avoid pursuit, but the pain of losing some FF's was partially assuaged by the by-now-predictable but nonetheless painful Mauler shock-out. The Klingons are relatively unimpressed by Romulan Technology.

Next, he chose the Kzinti attempt to reconquer the Capital or, much more likely, take down the Lyran BATS being upgraded to Starbase this turn.

Full report to follow but so far, the Alliance has rolled 6-5-6-6-6-2-5 in combat (5.1), to a Coalition 2-2-4-1-3-1-6 (2.7).

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, April 18, 2021 - 04:42 pm: Edit

We are now six rounds in over Kzintai. The Alliance has crushed its dice rolls every time it didn't matter too much (failing horribly when it did), and the Coalition has aggressively overcrippled at every opportunity to prevent the BATS being crippled, and dropped damage throughout to shorten the fight. It appears that barring crippling the BATS in the next round or so, the Starbase will go up. At this point, SIDSing the BATS probably doesn't make sense (the Kzinti probably do NOT want to do this again in six months).

We paused at that point, after realizing that for the - third consecutive round - the Alliance had rolled exactly one die point lower (on combined variable BIR and combat roll) than they needed to get 24 net damage points through the 2 shift. (And because I had mulch to move...)(actually I think they missed by 2 once?)

We re-calculated the Alliance compot like three times (no, it didn't change), because this was such a beating. And yeah, Trent could have put a DNL on the line and gotten it higher, but he didn't, because he didn't think he'd need to, and he probably should not have needed to; the Alliance has been killing it on rolls, but the shift is brutal and the details matter. Trent even directed the DWE in R5 to eliminate minus points, and then rolled down to miss again; if he rolls a '4' in Round 6 he hits exactly 23.5 damage and gets his cripple.

[Let me know in discussion if we screwed something up, I'd dearly like to have done so.]

The Alliance, in 18 rolled combat rounds, rolled up to 4.38; the Coalition, in the same 18 rounds, rolled down to 2.94. However, there was some EW to even things out (sometimes).

Lots of notable fights, including BATS 2416 going down, the Hydrans losing all their flagships in 0219 and having to retreat from a battle where they horribly outnumbered the Coalition [And I gave Trent a little gimme here; he originally was going to fight another round...], and most of Federation and Hydran space coming back to the home team.

The Coalition went 1 for 4 on mauler shock rolls, for those following that subplot, which is 9 EP they'll never see again, and consistent with the general theme.

Retrograde is next.

AT9 is over (I think - Trent may have a couple of strategic moves to clean up before CT10 - but he has set his reserves, so technically we're done).

In Hydran and Kzinti space, the only Alliance ships are in the offmap and, in the Hydran case, the capital. The Hydrans still have a very strong fleet in 0617, although they retreated about a dozen ships (frigates) to the off map for repair (in what is still a second main grid with a bunch of loose change).

In Federation space, the Feds retreated from the frontier to Starbase 2204 and BATS 2612, reinforced by new construction and with reserves set (two in 2204, one in 2612 and one on the Romulan front).

The Lyrans produce their STL and first interdiction carrier, with escorts. They also restart the static defenses production, which had been at low ebb since very early in the war. Otherwise, not a lot of surprises.

I think I like the interdiction carriers, although I know that not all players are impressed. Anyway, I'm making some to play with and will take them for a spin and see how they do in practice.
