I started to roll exploration and Trent wasn't interested, saying "Call me when you roll the B10." But the B10 rolls continued, and there is a B10 on the map, two years before it is eligible for any fun conversions, which in turn means it probably never gets converted?

Anyway, the Klingons make two D6U's, burning their stock of FFF's and converting a D6V in the process, and make a B10 and a C8. So, it looks like probably the Klingon first and second reserves, at least, will be pretty hardcore this turn...

The Feds could have kept some EP's out of Klingon hands by leaving ships in to dispute provinces, but chose not to, so the Klingons get a few extra EP's over expectation.

Romulans have a much more interesting SIT than the Klingons (boring but efficient) or the Lyrans (fun size class upgrades and an extra COMPOT on the carriers relative to Klingons, but otherwise missing some things). Unfortunately, you have to figure out how not to make the horrifically inefficient destroyers... I just downsubbed them all to make room for more EW. What fun.

Romulan Raids result in two disrupted provinces, #'s 2813 and 3309.

Coalition Operational Movement

The Romulans attack BATS 3215 and 3414 and neutral planets 3415 and 3912. They studiously avoid getting "in range" of the Federation fleet in 3911, or the intimidating Federation Reserve in 2612 ([CVA+3xDE+CLE], 6xCA, SC]

In Federation territory, the Klingons drop 141 ships, plus a Lyran battle tug, now that it can join in, on Starbase 2204, and create additional battle hexes as follows:

BATS 2201: Seven ships including a small scout.
Minor Planet 2505: 8 ships including a small scout.
BATS 2603: 8 ships including a small scout.
Minor Planet 2705: 8 ships including a small scout.

The Klingons occupy hexes/provinces 2402, 2602, 2110, 2111, 2209, 2210, and maintain a garrison (one ship) in 2412 and 2715 (a D6), pulling the Southern Federation forces back to defend battle stations as they are outnumbered by the Feds in 2612. They withdraw from province 2815, which returns to Federation control.

On the Hydran front, the Klingons reoccupy 1018/1117/1118 with a D6 and frigates, recapture undefended planets 0718 and 0519 with eight ship groups (2xD6+6xE4), station Joint Task Forces of Lyrans and Klingons in 0116 (6 Lyrans), 0118 (13 Joint), and 0219 (14 Joint) to cut supply.

0617: 92 Klingons, 62 Lyrans, and about 60 total fighters invade the Capital.

By my count, that is 10 battle hexes, but at least two of them could be very bloody (2204 and 0617) depending on what the Coalition - and to a lesser extent, the Alliance - wants to do.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, May 01, 2021 - 06:02 pm: Edit

Upon closer inspection, BATS 3125 is in range of 2612, because I can't count. So 3215 is defended by two Federation Reserves, and will probably survive, while 3414 and 3415 will go down.

Thus far, the only real contest is Starbase 2204, which is in process. So far, the Coalition has been putting its D6D's on the line, keeping the EW in the Coalition's favor. The idea was to do this until the Federation ran out of fighters and started dropping COMPOT, but the Federation has started crippling ships to keep fighters on the map... and the Coalition is running out of scouts it really is comfortable putting on the line. So the Klingons probably have to accept that the EW situation is shifting against them, and just start crippling ships of their own. I think they have enough to comfortably push the Feds off; but they've taken a lot of damage. Losses are pretty brutal; the Klingons got lucky and directed a CVS group that was put up with only two escorts for some reason (lack of escorts, I think), and the Feds have shot down two C8's.

[The Hydrans rolled a '6' to fail pursuit. Just as I did in 1401 on AT9, Trent allowed this one in 6 chance to get the best pursuit line, and it came up a '6' again.]

The Coalition is setting up a Lyran MB in 0416, under the watchful eyes of the fleet. There are two small (9 ships led by a D7) Klingon reserves in 0416.

The B10 is in 1802, covering both 1401 and 2306, where a Klingon MB is being set up, with a reserve also featuring a newly built D6U.

The fourth Klingon reserve is on Starbase 2318.

The Lyrans have two good reserves in 1401 and one great reserve (DN,STL,CVD group, etc.) in 1105.

The Romulans have retreated into the NZ and to the border BATS, to enable defense of those same Battle Stations on AT10. They have reserves in 4015 and 3817 (new construction strategically moved to those locations.)

Overall for the turn both sides rolled 151 in 41 chances (3.68...) so luck wasn't a big factor. There was a total of 2206 damage inflicted, with a small edge in inflicted damage to the Alliance. Casualties were not only big but tragic:

The Hydrans have smuggled some EPs on map to get around the continuing Coalition blockade, and build most of a full schedule (by hulls, anyway). The Hydrans have built more ships on AT10 than the Coalition shifted to the Hydran theater on CT10, and also killed (by a couple hulls) more ships than the Coalition killed. So like on the Kzinti front, despite Coalition successes in space, the pincount situation is slowly turning in the Alliance's favor.

The Kzinti spend 10 EP on repairs and their remaining 15 EP on the second-to-last shipyard layaway payment, and that is their economy for the turn. They rolled 12 on exploration, continuing their very poor survey dice.

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Monday, May 17, 2021 - 02:16 am: Edit

Silly question

No Hydran LGE (their DNL) in 617?

Only the Paladin is better for Compot - so I can't see how it would be not included in a Pursuit force, even ignoring the Fast Ship bonus?

(A THR perhaps might be overlooked on compot).

Silly question 2

What do the Kzinti have surveying (as 12 would be marginally above the 3D6 average of 10.5 - accepting a roll of 13 might have just found the next province....)

AT10 Raids:

Hydrans raid 0715 and 0716 with LGEs (defended by an E4 each)
Federation raids Province/hex 2414 with a CA (Defended by F5)
Federation raids planet 2715 (Arcturia) with a CA (Defended by D6)

An SEQ of SB0615 fighters reacts in to each of 0715 and 0716.A D7C reacts from 2215 tp 2414.Nothing can react on 2715.

In 0715, the Hydrans kill everything (roll of 12 with +3) (8 casualties on the chart) and reclaim the hex.

In 0716, the Coalition gives up the SB fighters, saving the E4, and gives up the hex.

In 2414, the Feds also roll a 12, but nonetheless withdraw, since the Coalition must either retreat (allowing the Federation the province since they are adjacent to the NZ) or give up the F5.  The Coalition chooses to give the hex and cripple the F5, retreating F5 and D7C into the NZ.

In 2715, each side rolled two casualties.  The Coalition cripples thier D6 and retreats, losing the planet but continuing to garrison the province.  The Federation cripples their cruiser and withdraws, allowing the population of Arcturia to rebel on their own.

AT10 Operational Movement

Operational Movement:
2405: The remnants of the Federation Fourth fleet (40+ cripples and 23 functional ships, plus 7 SEQ or so of fighters) are reacted on and pinned by the Klingon North Fleet which had been defending the MB being set up on the nearby planet.

1802: 40 SEQ of Kzinti attack and pin the Klingon 1st reserve in this hex, probably also able to destroy the MB there unless aid is given.

1001: The Kzinti Home Fleet attacks this planet, which has PDUS and a few Lyrans.  Multiple reserves are in range, but will have to choose.  50 ships and 54 fighters are here for the Kzinti.

Probably, the Coalition can make a fight of either 1802 or 1001, but probably not both.

The Hydrans are attacking the planets 0519 and 0718 with small forces somewhat superior to the defenders, and Klingon BATS 1214 with a BATS-busting force, since nothing can really defend it.

They have arranged for essentially their entire remaining fleet to meet in 0119 with about 30 Coalition ships.

The 5th Fleet , and parts of the southern fleets, have moved to the capital to defend against the Klingon menace in the Galactic North.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 23, 2021 - 11:31 pm: Edit

Reserve Movement:

The Klingons send two reserves to 0718, certainly saving the planet.

Their other reserves are out of range of anything (2318) or pinned (1802).

The Lyrans send two reserves to 1001 and one to 1802, and both battle hexes are probably narrowly advantage Alliance; the Kzinti definitely outnumber the Coaltion but will be fighting against EW and Compot disadvantages, as they have no available CR10 ships and are fighting the B10/STL/interdiction carriers.

The Hydrans will undoubtedly force open the line to the offmap in 0119 and retake 0519, and will also undoubtedly fail to liberate 0718.

Some lost ships, but nothing major, and critically the Federation BG Frederick escaped from the Coalition cordon in the northwest of Federation space and the loads of cripples will make it back to the capital to be repaired on AT11 while the remaining ships are able to defend against the Klingon menace. The Feds made an order-of-operations mistake in cleaning up some Klingons, and lost a couple of ships as a result by allowing Klingons to retreat onto them.

The Hydrans extracted a pound of flesh, a road to the offmap, and planet 0519, but are unlikely to defend any of it and will most likely retrograde to the capital, where only the main system is undevastated.

The Kzinti destroyed all the fixed defenses at 1802 and 1001, at huge cost, but this is somewhat less important because, well, the Coalition can't take advantage of the weakened fleets on CT11 because the Kzinti are all hiding in a nebula or something. We can't seem to find the jerks on our turn, though they pop up all over the galaxy on Alliance turns.

Coalition Turn 11 Operational movement.

A flood tide of crippled ships departs the Federation front for the Klingon homeland, the result of Federation action on CT10. After operational movement they are spread out through Klingon space, headed for repair (and upgrade) facilities. With them go several tugs and theater transports, now relieved of FRD-pulling duty as the Klingon and Lyran FRDs in 2105 (moving independently to 2205 this turn) are pretty much where they will need to be for a while.

The Klingons attack some soft targets but stay 3 or more hexes from the well-defended Federation capital.

In Hydran space the Coalition spreads out and reconquers the (undefended) Hydran space outside the capital, defending it loosely as the Hydrans now have ~180 SEQ in the capital that have to be pinned out of the Lyran BATS upgrade in 0416.

The Romulans flood the 6th Fleet starbase and everything near it, pouring across the border after a sort of false start on CT10.

Battle hexes:

0519: Seven Klingons who retreated off this planet on AT10 step back on it to fight the RDF.
2214: A few Klingons finally get around to taking this neutral planet.
2509: A Klingon Fleet detached from the north of about 40 ships is retaking this devastated planet.
2606: A small Klingon fleet of 24 ships is attacking a BATS.
2610: A fleet of 28 Klingons is attacking a planet, defended by two strong Federation reserves which moved in once the Capital was not attacked (one from the Capital, one from 2612.)
2612: 37 Klingons are attacking a well-defended battle station [42 mostly pretty good Federation ships].
2715: Twelve strong Klingons are attacking this devastated and undefended planet.
2905: About 12 Klingons area attacking a Federation BATS.
3016: Six Romulans including the VLV attacking an undefended BATS.
3215: About eight Romulans attacking an undefended BATS.
3611: The reinforced Romulan Home Fleet is attacking the Federation 6th Fleet Starbase, which is thinly defended as part of the 6th fleet returned to Earth in the face of the Klingon threat. 32 Feds remain to defend the SB.
3612: The Romulan West Fleet (39 ships) attacking an undefended planet (apart from PDUs)
3613: The 9 ships remaining in the Romulan Patrol Detachment beating up on an undefended BATS.
3711: 9 Romulans are attacking this undefended planet.
3812: 12 Romulans are attacking this undefended planet.

15 battle hexes; not a particularly active turn...

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, June 06, 2021 - 10:58 pm: Edit

Combat is over on CT11, and was quiet until the end, when over Starbase 3611 the Romulan crippled most of their fleet trying to be absolutely sure to kill the Federation Aux carriers that had been left behind. Due to aggressive EW-shopping by the Romulans, the battle went 14 rounds and resulted in the death of some valuable Federation ships, but enough damage to the Roms that they will be unlikely to be quite as aggressive on CT12.

Dice were a little off, 3.03 for the Coalition to 2.78 for the Alliance, but the Coalition had a habit of rolling 6's against empty bases, so perhaps the overall effect of dice was even-ish. The Coalition's 6 on the first round against SB 3611 was important.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Thursday, June 10, 2021 - 11:56 pm: Edit

CT11 is over.

The Coalition finishes getting its forces to repair points, and the Lyrans bring a new MB to 1802 and begin setting it up. Once again, the Kzinti should have few problems destroying it, but two Klingon Reserves (in 2105) and a Lyran reserve (in 1401) can at least add to the dozen or so ships on the planet to make the Kzinti pay. The two other Lyran reserves are in 1105.

Klingon reserves are set up in 0416 as well (2 reserves of about 10 ships each).

The Romulans retrograde the cripples from 3611 to repair (including the Home Fleet + auxiliaries on formerly neutral planet 3912.)

The only real Romulan reserve is in 3516. There is a 3 ship reserve in 4015 and a reserve set from the North fleet (which is unreleased). The Romulans are currently holding provinces 3015, 3314, 3610 and 3612, and disputing province 3711, where the mostly demolished but still dangerous Federation 6th Fleet is holding station.

The Klingon southern flank against the Federation again looks underdefended, but without BATS 2612, the Federation lacks supply on a lot of potential targets in that region. Planet 2715 could no doubt be recovered if the Federation chose, although the Klingons have a strong battle line plus on it. There are lots of Klingon targets of opportunity, but the Federation has to watch the capital closely on CT12 and CT13 as the Klingons now have supply on the Capital from 2305 (well defended) as well as 2509 (vulnerable but in range of reserves) and 2705 (vulnerable but in range of reserves).

One edit:

In retrospect, the Lyrans had only an LTT available in the capital and therefore cannot take a mobile base to 1802 by strategic movement, because that would require 2 LTT's. Boo.

So instead, the Lyrans will simply set up a single PDU in the same location, leaving all else unchanged.

The Federation economy is still disturbingly healthy; only two downsubs (CA to FF) were required, and the Federation did 54 EPs of repairs and still added a full schedule of hulls to the map. The Federation is now on its full schedule, with 12xFF and 12xNCL popping up every turn. The Feds also have max FFF saved for AT12.

Kzinti Economy

The Kzinti are on their last turn without a shipyard, but they get 20 EP from the Feds to add to their 25 EPs off map income. They also add 5.5 EP of salvage.

They spend 15 on completing their pretty new shipyard, 20 EP on repairs, and build an FCR at the off map starbase. They also unconvert a DNL to DN, since they would like to have at least one CR 10 ship in the fleet.

They end with 5 EP saved for their first turn producing a schedule of ships since AT5.
