Alliance Turn 11: Raid Phase

The Hydrans raid 0114 and 1019 with LGE's.
The Federation raids 2212, after considering Sherman's Planet but noting that 2 hexes away there is a D7 eligible for Extended Reaction.

All raids are unopposed, since they are in captured territory not LTC and there are no ships in range to react.  Two provinces become disrupted Hydran provinces rather than Lyran and Klingon provinces, respectively. Meanwhile the Klingons lose support from a province in Federation territory.

Alliance Turn 11 Operational Movement

The Federation 7th fleet divides itself between planet 2509 and province 2212, where adjacent Klingons decline to react in.

2509 is defended by a CVT group and an extra frigate, and could choose to fight a round since it has fighters to give, but probably will withdraw and give an FF to the Fed force of 3xCA+3xFF.

The province garrison in 2210 is just two ships.

The Federation then moves 66 ships, all FF's and CL's, from the capital to the upgrading MB in 2305. There is no reaction until the ships hit 2305, at which point the B10-Invincible group (a reserve from the prior turn) reacts in. The Federation then moves its reserves from 2610 to the same location (28 SEQ including fighters). The Coalition does not have the pincount to keep the Federation out. This was done in two stacks, and the second stack to move, consisting of cruisers, was jumped on in 2406 by seven frigates and a D6, pinning five cruisers out of 2305. Most of the remaining Federation fleet then joins the battle in 2305, leaving a CC behind in 2405 on the way to play with the Klingon D6 cruiser hanging out there. The Coalition react in their last free ship, a Lyran CW that had been hanging out with the FRD's in 2205.

In Kzinti space, the entire uncrippled Kzinti Fleet tries the Capital (89 ships, 86 fighters) the Lyrans have the Night Roar (22 ships, 12 fighters reacted in), a strong reserve, and the Foremost Fleet (46 ships 18 fighters). The Lyrans are defending a Klingon MB--->BATS upgrade and have the benefit of 6 Klingon PDUs over Kzintai.

In Hydran space, the Hydrans attack pretty much everything out of reaction range of the Lyran MB--->BATS upgrade and associated giant fleet in 0416:

0116: 5 Hydrans (LM,FCR, frigates) against three Lyrans (CL, 2xFF)
0118: 33 Hydrans against eight Lyrans.
0519: 40 Hydrans against seven Klingons (2xD6,5xE4)
0718: 54 Hydrans against eight Klingons (2xD6, 6xE4)
1117: Nine good Hydrans against Klingon frigates.
1118: Nine good Hydrans against Klingon D6,E4.
[The Hydrans have placed an FF in 0717 to preserve retrograde in the event that the scary Klingon reserves in 0416 successfully protect 0718.]

Reserves are next.

AT11 Reserve Movement

"Alliance Turn 11: The Alliance Strikes Back."

[Before we get started, a point of order: I have been referring to things happening in 2106 and 2306 as happening in 2105 and 2305. Of course the excitement is happening on the planets. The big engagement between the entire Federation fleet and a mess of Klingons is in 2306 this turn.]

The Klingon First and Third reserves in 2106 step forward to support 2306. The Klingons are now outnumbered by about 15 ships, but have the B-10 and a quality force, while the Feds have a fair number of FF's. Probably the Federation is just here to kill the upgrading MB, but who knows?

The Lyran reserves all go to 1401, where another potentially major engagement will occur, again centered on preventing a BATS upgrade. The Lyrans have 104 ships and lots of DN's, so the Capital should be in no danger.

The Klingon reserves in 0416 (#2,#4) go to 0718, where the Coalition will be outnumbered but will have a COMPOT advantage.

On to Combat!

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, June 12, 2021 - 05:20 pm: Edit

The Alliance chooses to run Hex 2306 first; this feels to both of us like a very critical fight. Perhaps the most important of the war to date. A Coalition victory maintains their supply in range of Earth, and the Federation's fleet is pretty much everything they have. An Alliance victory probably sets the Klingons back a couple of turns (and killing the MB wouldn't be a bad consolation prize).

Note that both sides have spent a Command Point and have Admirals, so the lines should be pretty decent...

The Coalition is fighting the approach, and the B-10 Invincible is fighting a significant engagement for the first time...

Q - how did 2 Hydran CU use 3 FFF???

By Mike Erickson (Mike_Erickson) on Sunday, June 13, 2021 - 01:35 am: Edit

2306 is such a great jumping off point into the Fed capital!

In 1986 Coalition fleets would try to build 2xSB in 2306 (one Klingon, one Lyran). If they could do it they often had a good chance at total victory.

Not quite the same with 2010 rules, but back in the day.

And thanks again Graham for taking the time to post your game updates. It's fun reading.

Alliance Turn 11 combat is over.

In 2306, the Federation crashed in with a big fleet including pretty much every SEQ from the Capital, and successfully battered their way in and killed the upgrading Mobile Base before it could become a BATS. They lost a lot of expensive hulls, but came out mostly in one piece albeit short some cruisers and 4 pt. scouts.

Elsewhere in Federation territory, the Federation cleaned up some province garrisons, but not too many of them really; the assault on 2306 required a lot of the ships to be concentrated in one place.

In 1401, the Kzinti also stopped a BATS upgrade, taking heavy losses but putting off the potential Starbase defense of 1401 a few more turns (and therefore putting an eventual Starbase upgrade at least on the final turn before exhaustion).

The Hydrans liberated some provinces and planet 0519 without a fight, killing some frigates. In 0718 the Klingons fought a few rounds, killed a few cruisers (only one DG, mostly HR's) and retreated. Even with both reserves on the front, the Hydrans have too many ships. The Klingons lost a Mauler in pursuit, and retreated over an FFT that was holding open retrograde options in 0717 (which would have been important if the Klingons had somehow held 0718, allowing Hydrans in Eastern Hydran space to retrograde to the Capital...) The Klingons could have fought longer, but they were running out of fighters and uncrippled maulers.

Alliance Turn 11 is over!

The Feds begin setting up a Mobile Base over Earth and retrograde the majority of their ships in the theater to the Capital. They do keep a decent fleet on planet 2610 and Starbase 2901 (Where all four reserves are set since the Federation has its only unmoved ships at that location.)

The Kzinti retreated offmap after the (Fourth?) Battle of Kzintai, and have no presence on the map.

The Hydrans mostly retrograde to the Capital, except for LM,3xCU,FCR which were in 0116 and will have to retrograde offmap (Trent has them in 0519 but they did not have a retrograde path there, unless I'm missing something, so this will get corrected).

On to Turn 12!

The Lyrans are going to Starbase in 0416, and that means that with the heavy repair bills (mostly repairing Klingons), they are a little short of money for fancy ships. So they build CV (rather than CVD) and downsub a couple of frigates.

The Klingons have an even bigger repair bill, mostly CT10 cripples from the Starbase fight getting fixed in the backfield, and also have a C8V available this turn... so they downsub almost everything except the specialty ships (they need more "E4's to give." anyway) and fix the cripples. Cripple backlogs are anathema! We fix the ships first, build a full schedule, and then decide what else we can afford. This time it is some replacement PDUs and an MB, rather than real ships. I need to spread E4's around and win pinning fights right now, the Klingons have plenty of battlegroup ships to cripple if it comes to it.

[Now that I look at it, I need to check the Command Points for the Romulans to make sure I recorded the one they used on SB 3611. Will do.]

The Romulans have lots of repairs too, so they aren't doing a lot of fancy stuff after committing to the SUB so they don't lose the opportunity to substitute the heavy carrier build in Y174. But almost all the ships are immediately coming back and the Feds have pretty much turned their back, so it could be a big turn for the Romulans!

This table includes only those ships that are in range of something relevant, so a fair number of backfield repairs are not included (the Lyran STL! Lots of Klingons!) which explains why the numbers are lower in some cases than the previous spreadsheet.

Of course, the Federation has pretty much ignored the Romulans apart from fighting like crazy over SB 3611, so the Romulans aren't stretched or anything... at least not before CT12 Operational Movement...

Coalition Operational Movement CT12

[From West to East...]

The Lyrans occupy 0116,0117,and 0118, cutting off the Hydran offmap.

In 0519, the Klingons step back onto the planet with 2xD6,4xE4 that were just chased off it on AT11, and another E4 (from 0717) joins them.

In 0718, the Klingons move a "minimum stack" (D6,7xE4) onto the planet and are rewarded by Hydrans reacting in (An RN and several frigates; enough to beat off the Klingons). The Klingons add a carrier group and a couple of decent ships including a C5 to encourage the Hydrans to call it a day.

The Klingons move back into East Hydran Space (the 1017-1117-1118 corner) with a total of 5xE4,2xD6, 3xE4 and D6 of which were already there and had retreated a hex on AT11. A few ships fly back and forth between 0615 and 0416 to maximize repairs on CT13 and set up for Hydran activity. Nothing bothers the giant Hydran fleet in the Capital. This is now the third turn of devastation on the Hydran outer planets.

In Federation space, the Klingons move their Southern fleets and the B10 (and its friends) onto minor planet 2610, where the Feds are on their own and are down on SEQ 90-56.

Another Klingon fleet attacks major planet 2708, drawing out the Feds from Earth (although the Federation has plenty of ships left behind to make sure the Klingons are authoritatively pinned out. The Klingons then added some ships from locations that could not reach Earth, but the Federation left it alone, and the final count is 73 for the Federation (and 4 PDU) against 68 Klingons (who lack a CR10 flagship to boot). This looks like just a Coalition mistake; but maybe it's brilliant!

The Klingons jump back on undefended planet 2509 with CVT+AD5+2xE4A.

The Klingons move a bunch of D6's and Frigates into Northern Federation space, adding provinces 3103 and 3302, but drawing fighters off of BATS 3203 into hex 3202, where the Klingons will (no doubt) get mobbed by Federation reserves; as a result, the Federation will hold that hex to maintain a supply route to the off map area.

Lots of ships (most of them Romulan...) left to move...

[Comment thread.]

[Coalition Operational Movement Continues...]

The Klingons clean up their garrisons, placing ships on the corners of 2412, 2413, and 2513 as well as returning to hex 2210, adjacent to occupied hexes 2209, 2111 and 2110.

They send an E4 to the Orion cluster, and the fickle Orions withdraw from the Federation in the hopes of striking a better deal with whoever wins the war, or something.

A few of the Klingons' repairs have moved, but most are awaiting free strategic movement and probable reserve status.

The Romulans send groups of ships to every undefended target in range, including:

BATS 3209, Minor Planet 3210, BATS 3212, BATS 3508, Major Planet 3509, BATS 3806, and BATS 3808.

Combat on Coalition Turn 12 (now in the right thread):

On 0519, and in the various open Hydran space areas, the Coalition reoccupies without incident. On 0718, where the Hydrans reacted in, they think better of their choice and give up a CU to retreat. There was no other combat in Hydran space. The Hydrans are once again bottled up in 0617, but have a giant fleet which can be safely expected to blow up a bunch of garrison ships again on AT12.

In Federation space, the Klingons offered an approach in 2708 and the giant Federation fleet that reacted in happily accepted, and then rolled a '6', bagging a D6S out of the scout box in return for a mere CA on the line before the Klingons retreat.

In 2509, a fight is shaping up; the Federation has 2 PDU but is heavily outnumbered and faces the B10; presumably the Klingons will eventually take the planet but the Federation has a decent fleet and can stick around kind of as long as they want. Preliminary lines are up for the first round over the planet after the Feds declined approach, and both sides have put up cruisers...

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Thursday, June 24, 2021 - 12:00 am: Edit

Through three rounds over 2610, the Coalition have traded D6M, D6D, and F5E for 2xPDU and 2xCC. It looks like the Feds are just waiting to run out of fighters for the CVA group on the line, so the Klingons have switched to carriers and battlegroup ships to avoid losing any more specialty ships.

With a B10 and CVA, both sides are still over 100 COMPOT, though, so we'll see!

Coalition Turn 12 is over.

After the Alliance retreated following the fourth round on 2610 combat went quickly because it was just fixed defenses getting attacked by Romulans.

A few of the battles weren't rolled, as usual on the less interesting BATS we just hand waved it and crippled a frigate, because that was kind of inevitably what would happen.

Following combat, the Klingons retrograded the B-10 and the North Fleet to 2505, where they are now setting up a mobile base and where they have placed a very strong reserve headed by the C8V which free-stratted in, along with a bunch of new construction pincount ships.

Klingons also have reserves on 2105 and Sherman's Planet, and all the reserves are well stocked due to the repairs.

The Klingons set up MB and add 2 PDU (now 5) in 1401. Trying again!

The Lyrans have two strong reserves in Kzinti space and are trying again with an MB setting up in 1802. Notably, the Klingon 2nd Reserve in 2105 as well as the two Lyran reserves covers this.

The Lyrans and the Klingons each have a terrifying reserve in 0416, and the Lyrans added some big ships in the South (the STL!) while the Klingons added about 10 pincount ships.

Most notable in retrograde are the Romulans, who retrograde entirely back from deep Federation space and are now arrayed on the two Federation minors near the border, with only frigates deeper in Federation space. It is really hard not to see this as a "tell"...

Losses were light:

Romulans lost BHE, SN.
Feds lost CA, 2xCC.
Klingons lost D6S, D6D, D6M, F5E, D5, F5.
Hydrans lost CU.

I didn't count up cripples this time because they aren't particularly significant.

The Federation is in full downsubsstitution mode, but they get all their SEQ, complete the CVA build, and get their repairs completed, so they will once again be dangerous on AT12.

The Kzinti are completely repaired and have a functioning shipyard, which is also spitting out FF's for the most part for economic reasons.

The Hydrans need to burn some FFF since they've been making nothing but frigates, so they convert an RN to CV. Otherwise, more frigates!

[The Feds have re-done their economy because they realized only after the fact that the Orions no longer pay their taxes back to Earth, due to a sneaky Klingon frigate that (finally) snuck into the Orion cluster.]

They will forego some repairs (8.5 EPs - 7xFF,SC) rather than miss a CVA or FF build entirely.
