Combat is over!

On the Hydran front, the Coalition finally killed BATS 0318, captured planets 0416 and 0519, and continued penning in the Hydrans; both the Klingons and Lyrans are setting up MB over 0617.

On the Kzinti front, the Coalition finally captured planet 1802 and recaptured planets 1001 and 1504.

On the Fed/Klingon front, the Klingons captured planets 2306 and 2610; killed BATS 2606 and BATS 2609, and are setting up a MB in 2914.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Romulans captured both NZ planets 3415 and 3912; killed BATS 3016 and BATS 3414, and are disrupting some provinces.

The turn is over!

On the Hydran front, the Coalition left token forces on planets 0416 and 0519, mostly have their fleets over 0617 (defending the base construction), and have about 40 ships at SB 0411. There is a tiny (3 ship) reserve at 0617 and about a dozen ships split over two reserves at SB 0608.

On the Kzinti front, the bulk of Coalition forces are in and around Lyran SB 1407, with a whole lot of ships over at the indestructible BATS in 1807. There is a solid reserve at SB 1509 and another solid reserve at BATS 1807.

On the Fed/Klingon front, the big issue is that the Klingons left about 40 ships in the interior of Fed space, on and next to planet 2610. Other than that, there are token force spread around holding provinces, etc. There is a tiny 3 ship reserve at planet 2715.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Romulans mostly are inside Romulan space (other than some province raiders). The exception is the big pile of ships (Rom and Klingon) in 2914 setting up MBs. There is a Fed fleet on BATS 3215 that is in a partial grid cut off from the rest of Fed space. The Romulans have solid reserves at BATS 3715 and BATS 4012.

Raids occurred and moves are underway!

In the Raid phase, the Alliance raided 7 Coalition provinces, succeeding in disrupting 6 of them (and being chased off by a tenacious ROM POL on one province). It is worth pointing out (for purposes of demonstrating the effect of the Raid rule), the Alliance have zero potential to hit a single FF anywhere to kill it with a raid as a result of the Coalition currently tying up along the lines of 75 small ships holding/disrupting about 25 provinces and planets that, in games without the Raid rules, would be held by a single FF each.

On the Hydran front, the Hydrans pinned the Lyrans at SB 0411, moves ships to capture/disrupt the 4 southmost Lyran provinces (as well as disrupting 2 due to raids), and then consolidated ships around SB 0215, also leaving a reasonable battle line in hex 0218, but no other combat hexes.

On the Kzinti front, the Kzinti are attacking subjugated planets 1001 and 1802 (and will liberate them both); some province raiders in the West edge of Kzinti space, and are once again sending piles of ships to KLI BATS 1807.

On the FED/KLI front, so far, the Feds have rounded up and attacked a forward KLI fleet on and around planet 2610; sent ships to attack a small fleet holding planet 2106, and a smaller force on planet 2306.

On the FED/ROM front, the Feds have sent a force to attack ROM BATS 3715 (probably pinning a reserve) and ROM BATS 3516. It isn't that likely they'll kill either, but not impossible.

Plenty of ships left to move!

AT10

Op moves are done, waiting for reserves.

On the Hydran front, one battle hex, and obvious pinning fight over SB 0411. Other than that, the Hydrans mostly consolidated forces, and between province raiders and raids, the Lyrans are losing 10 EPs this turn. There are two Lyran reserves that can go to SB 0411, but unlikely to make a difference.

On the Kzinti front, 4 battle hexes. Planet 1001 will see a Coalition FF die, hex 0903 will see a Coalition FF die. Planet 1802 will see a Coalition FF die and the planet get liberated. BATS 1807 sees two giant forces (100+ ships each side) which may or may not result in the BATS dying. There are two reserves on this front, but one is pinned at 1807, and the other can only go to 1807 (and it won't unpin the first one).

On the Fed/Klingon front, the Feds are liberating planets 2106 and 2306 (likely killing an FF at each planet); no reserves can get there. Planet 2610 sees about 50 Feds (and a lot of fighters) facing about 35 Klingons (with fewer fighters). A 3 ship reserve can make it there, but unlikely to make a difference.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Feds are attacking BATS 3516 and BATS 3715, and then hitting some province raiders in 3214. There are a couple reserves that can go places, but one is small, and one will likely save a BATS

AT10

Combat is well underway. Nothing real interesting has happened. The Hydrans fought an approach round in front of SB 0411, discovered that the Lyrans have gotten to the point where they can field 109 point forces out of carriers and battle groups, which was a problem. The Kzinti once again attacked BATS 1807, the two sides had compots of 121 (ZIN) and 122 (KLI), so all the Kzinti needed to do to get through the approach was roll 1 point higher than the Klingons, but again, failed to do that, so both sides lost a good scout and the Kzinti retreated.

Over on the Romulan side of things, the Feds managed to kill a single SN through the combined efforts of 4 battle hexes (of which 2 were fighting retreats). They are currently fighting near BATS 3715, which may or may not be an actual fight. They did recapture planets 2106 and 2306, however, so that's something.

"discovered that the Lyrans have gotten to the point where they can field 109 point forces out of carriers and battle groups, which was a problem"

Must be out of normal thoughts - as if the Lyrans are using a Battlegroup - the Hydrans can kill a CW and only lose a HN/CU/AH in exchange?

If the Lyran line was just Carriers and a Flag in Form.... that is more of an issue - best you can kill is a FF then normally!!

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 - 02:11 pm: Edit

I don't know that I understand what you are saying?

I was just commenting on the fact that in y173, the Lyrans have enough good carriers (including the CVD) that they can put together kinda nuts lines with nothing real valuable to lose.

AT10

Combat is over!

Not much happened. On the Hydran front, an approach battle where they Hydrans traded a CU for a DWE, and that was that. On the Kzinti front, the Kzinti took back a couple captured planets, and once again (possibly for the 4th turn in a row) were repulsed from attacking BATS 1807; I figured I'd fight one round of approach with no command point and some drone bombardment, and hope to roll a point higher than the Coalition, but it was, again, not to be. On the Fed/Klingon front, the Feds took back some planets, most importantly planet 2610, but there are still 3 dozen Klingons in range of Earth. On the Fed/Romulan front, the Feds made two abortive attacks on BATS, and killed a province raider.

Ships Killed:
-ZIN: TGT+SP
-HYD: CU
-FED: NCL, FF

-LYR: DWE, DD, FF

AT10

The turn is over!

On the Hydran front, most of their fleet is on SB 0215 (about 85 ships including a solid reserve), a modest fleet in 0218 (about 15 ships); a dozen ships holding southern Lyran provinces; a solid reserve off map (9 ships including the new IC).

On the Kzinti front, about 80 ships at 1401 (including a solid reserve with the new CVA), about 75 ships at SB 1704, a modest reserve off map, small groups of ships on planets around the map.

The Feds have about 50 ships at SB 2204 (including a solid reserve), a dozen ship reserve at planet 2705, about 40 ships at SB 2808, a dozen ship reserve at SB 3604, about 80 ships (including a solid reserve) at SB 3611.

Hi Peter

I was looking at using 3 Carrier Groups for the line...as the Lyran carriers are so good.

CW's at 5 Ep's are too expensive to lose :)

LOL. Yeah, the Coalition doesn't have much choice in this. It takes a long time before they can consistently field good CV lines in all theaters like the Alliance can initially.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 01:17 pm: Edit

Heh, yeah, now that CVDs are available (12 fighters as a single oversized squadron on a 4 attack ship), the Lyrans get something like:

DN+ADM (c/f), [CVD, CWE, DWE], [TGV, CWE, DWE], [3CW, 3DW], (CWS)=109/3

For a clearly single round pinning fight. It has 18 fighters to absorb hits, and if the Hydrans roll low, they don't even get to kill anything (a comparable Hydran force at this point has, like, 85 compot, so on 20%, they can't even shoot down a DW). The Lyrans can pick low BIR and will always get to sink a CU, but if they roll high, they can snag a scout or soemthing.

I mean, like, this isn't earth shattering or anything, but it's the first time this game the Lyrans rolled out the new CVD, and it caught me off guard :-)

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 01:19 pm: Edit

Oh, huh. Just noticed that the CVD is a heavy carrier, so it needs 3 escorts, which we both missed. Probably better for them, really :-)

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 01:54 pm: Edit

The CVD is a nice ship, but it's pretty pricey on 3 FFF per turns.

But you can field DN+ADM[c/f], [CVD+2xCWE+FF], [CV+2xCWE+FF], 3xFF for 84 without showing anything but FFs.

But before like, Turn 17, the Lyrans really only get to have one fleet with real carriers.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, December 23, 2021 - 04:57 pm: Edit

The Lyrans got money to blow :-)

By Mike Erickson (Mike_Erickson) on Friday, December 24, 2021 - 11:44 am: Edit

It's really interesting to see how much more effective the Lyran fleets might have been in the GW if they were able to better resolve their internal political disputes and prejudices and build differently.

If the Lyrans got their political act together, the Hydrans, Kzinti, and maybe even the Klingons would have a problem.

CT11 (y173 Fall)

The Klingons start the turn with about 380 (?!?!?) EPs available (they had about 175 in treasury. They build D7C, D7V, D6M, AD5, D5S, 7D5, F5E, 5F5, 4E4; activate 2D6; convert D6>D6M, D6>D6S; pay to convert 2xMB>BATS (0617, 2914); spend 27EPs on repairs. End econ with 194 EPs in treasury.

The Lyrans start the turn with about 193 EPs available. They build BC, STT, 3CW, CWE, 2DW, DWE, 3FF; convert CW>CWS, CW>STJ; Convert MB>BATS (0617); spend 8 on repairs. End econ with about 82 in treasury.

The Romulans start the turn with about 117 EPs available. They build CON, FH, SPF, 2SP, SPC, 2SKE, SK, SEH, FAL, SNB; convert WE>KE; convert MB>BATS (2914); spend 4 on repairs. End econ with about 17 in treasury.

CT11

This just in!

We just discovered that the Romulans sort of, uh, forgot to add the Pre War Construction ships to their fleets for T10. It seemed like the T10 Romulan attack wasn't as devastating as it usually is, and then I was counting ships and was all "Huh. I have more ships at SB 3611 then the Romulans have in range of SB 3611. That's weird..." and started counting ships in fleets.

On the upside, it probably didn't make *that* big of a difference to what the Romulans did on T10; they avoided SB 3611 (which was significantly reinforced) and moved a bunch of ships up to hex 2914 to support the aggressive SB emplacement in that hex. An extra about 25 ships on the border (West Fleet and Patrol Detachment; Home Fleet wasn't in range of Fed targets on CT10) would have probably killed another couple BATS, but those will get killed for a song this turn anyway. The Feds didn't accomplish anything at all on AT10 other than killing a province raiding SN (fighting retreat FTW!), really, so the extra ships on the border wouldn't have changed what happened at all anyway. And now with an extra 50 ships on the border, CT11 will be way more interesting for the Romulans :-)

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Monday, January 03, 2022 - 03:54 pm: Edit

CT11

Raids happened and moves are under way!

In the raid phase, the Klingons sent a C5 to raid an interior Fed province, and were successful in disrupting it.

In Fed space, the Klingons have attacked planet 2610 (already devastated); the Romulans have started pouring over the border (there were cloaked legions!), attacking BATS 3215, BATS 3212, BATS 3613, and planet 3210 so far.

The Lyrans started rounding up Hydran province raiders, and have attacked the ever popular Kzinti planet 1001.

Lots and lots of ships to move.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Thursday, January 06, 2022 - 04:15 pm: Edit

CT11

Lots more moves.

On the Fed/Romulan front, the Romulans/Klingons are now attacking BATS 3209, planet 3210, BATS 3212, BATS 3613, planet 3711, BATS 3810; they have parked about 85 SEQ on SB 3611, where the Feds have about 90 SEQ, so not quite pinned yet (there is a reserve there).

On the Klingon side of things, the Klingons have really committed a lot of small ships to capturing Fed space, and are currently hitting already devastated planets 2509 and 2610.

In Kzinti space, the Lyrans sent about 2 dozen ships to planet 1202, but the Kzinti reacted a comparable force to meet them there.

Still plenty to move.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Saturday, January 08, 2022 - 09:47 am: Edit

CT11

As moves continue, in Hydran space, the Coalition moved a force to engage a Hydran force sitting in 0218 (a "we are keeping supply open" fleet); the Coalition will certainly push them out of the hex. There is still a giant pile of Coalition ships (about 100 SEQ) in 0617 that haven't gone anywhere yet, but there are more Hydran SEQ than that sitting on SB 0215.

In Kzinti space, the Coalition have started attacking SB 1704, but if the Coalition pin both 1704 and Fed SB 2204, both forces will be barely able to pin them.

In Fed Space, currently almost the entire Southern half of Fed space is swarmed by Klingons and Romulans. Everything under the xx10 line is under attack, and all provinces are occupied (most are captured). SB 3611 will probably survive the turn, but everything else will be destroyed/captured.

Still ships to move.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Monday, January 10, 2022 - 04:29 pm: Edit

CT11

Op moves are done and reserves have been deployed!

In Hydran space, 4 battle hexes. SB 0215 has a giant pile of Coalition vs a giant pile of Hydrans. There are about a dozen more Hydran SEQ in the hex. It isn't impossible that the Coalition want to SIDS the SB, but not that likely at this point. Hexes 0211 and 0312 see battle lines killing an HN in each hex (province raiders). 0218 sees a more significant force attacking a Hydran carrier line that will probably lose an FF and retreat.

In ZIN space, 4 battle hexes. Planet 1001 sees a strong ZIN reserve and a few ships at the planet facing a slightly inferior force (+/- a dozen ships on each side); planet 1202 sees about 30 ZIN facing about 25 Lyrans (also a slightly inferior force). Planet 1105 will see a ZIN FF die and the planet recaptured. SB 1704 sees about 50 Coalition ships facing a significantly larger force (likely mostly a feint and to rescue some Klingon ships that were on the wrong side of the SB).

On the FED/KLI front, 6 battle hexes. Planets 2106 and 2306 will be recaptured without actual combat by forces big enough to defeat the reserve that could have gone there, but didn't. Planet 2509 will be recaptured by 4 ships without actual combat. Planet 2610 will be recaptured and see an FF die. In hex 2709, about 35 Feds are facing about 25 Klingons, in a pin fight reinforced by a reserve. SB 2204 sees about an identical number of Klingons facing the same number of Feds (about 65 SEQ on a side). Probably just a pinning action.

On the FED/ROM front, 10 battle hexes. Planets 3210, 3612, and 3711 will be captured with minimal combat (just PDUs). BATS 3209, 3212, 3215, 3613, 3810, and 3812 will be killed with minimal combat (no significant defending forces). SB 3611 sees about the same number of Romulans facing the same number of Feds (about 90 SEQ on a side). Again, a possible SID attack, but likely just a pinning action.

Lots of combat to be had!

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 - 07:46 pm: Edit

CT11

Combat is almost over!

Considering the number of combat hexes (24), there actually wasn't much violence. The Romulans blew up a lot of undefended BATS and some planets; there were numerous "We go to your SB, offer a declined approach, and run away" fights; the Kzinti accepted the approach over SB 1704, but they had a significant numerical advantage there. A handful of FFs were killed that were holding space and planets.

As of press time, the only unresolved fight is over Fed SB 2204, where the Klingons have about 65 ships facing about 65 Feds, and they will probably offer a declined approach and retreat.
