Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Federation & Empire: F&E INPUT: F&E Reports from the Front: Active Scenarios: Where Terrible Things Happen [GAME POSTS]: Archive through March 12, 2022

And the game begins.

Nothing fancy in setup. The Klingons put the Home fleet in 1212, the Lyrans put the usual 6 ships in 0707, and everything else sets up where it can, close to the border. COMCONs are in 2204 and 1411.

The Kzinti set up the Duke's fleet in deep space at 1003, the Count's on the Starbase at 0902, with reserves on SB0902 and SB1304.

And on to CT1.

Bring on the Hydran Expedition, the Kzinti Capital attack on T2, and the Alliance counter attacks which see the Coalition second guessing how bold they want to be !

Note, the Lyrans start with 3 FFF (half of the yearly allotment) ...

Coalition Turn 1 Operational Movement
-------------------------------------

There are no raids.

The Lyrans cross the neutral zone and land on both BATS 0701 (5 SEQ after reaction) 0703 (14 SEQ) and 0803 (47 SEQ).

In an apparent attempt to pick a fight, the "move adjacent then back off to the BATS" was not performed, and every Kzinti in range moves to 0803, where the Kzinti are a couple SEQ short of the Lyran fleet (after both Reserves pile into the hex).

Not a lot of action this turn, the battle in 0803 fizzled out when the Kzinti realized that with the BATS down, their fighters wouldn't absorb all the Coalition damage and they would be eating a pursuit round. So the Lyrans manage to get into 0803 with a bunch of ships, which presumably will matter on CT2.

Net Losses:

Lyran: 2xCA killed, 2xFF,2xHFF,HDD crippled.
Kzinti: 3xBATS killed

By Joe Hepp (Buckjoe) on Saturday, January 29, 2022 - 07:01 pm: Edit

I know I'm still fairly new at this but I thought the Lyrans couldn't build the STT until 170?

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, January 30, 2022 - 10:55 pm: Edit

Coalition EOT
-------------

The Lyrans retrograde out of Kzinti space except in hex 0803, where the Red Claw Fleet is hanging out, like it isn't a thing. ("Was that your border there?")

All Lyran new construction moves to 0705, also the retrograde point for most of the BATS-busting brigades.

The crippled HDD is at BATS 0504, the crippled HFF's are at 0707, and the crippled FF's are at 0705.

AT1 Raids and Movement
----------------------

The Kzinti raid province 0302 successfully with a Home Fleet BC.

No combat on AT1. Due to the map topology, attacking Lyran BATS 0502 would allow reaction movement from 0803 cutting off retrograde, and attacking 0803 would pull Lyrans forward. So nothing happened except the Kzinti withdrew to their fortresses.

The Kzinti divide their forces between the capital, 0902, and 1304, with reserves in 1401 and 1704. All auxiliaries have been moved to 1401.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 19, 2022 - 08:52 pm: Edit

On Coalition Turn 2, the Coalition does not raid anything but swarms Kzinti space, hitting everything obvious and both Starbases, but leaving the Capital alone, since with ships in 0803 the Kzinti had a goodly number of ships there that will now be bystanders.

There are ten Combat Hexes:

1001, 1004, 1105, 1205, 1405, 1504, 1506, and 1605 are all undefended static defenses being hit by forces of between 5 and 6 ships.

In 0902, the Count's fleet (less a few ships that left) is being pounced on by the lion's share of the active Lyran navy: 70 SEQ against 32 SEQ in this hot cat on cat action.

In 1304, the Klingons have the advantage 59 ships to 21 ships.

The Kzinti can be happy that the capital will get another round of PDUs before it is attacked, but otherwise not a lot to write home about.

Reserves are next. The Kzinti have two pretty strong reserves, one in 1401 and one in 1704.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 19, 2022 - 09:09 pm: Edit

CT2 Reserve Movement

Both reserves go to 1304. The Klingons still have a significant edge in SEQ, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility that they will fail to destroy the starbase. The Klingons have fifteen extra ships, the Kzinti have more fighters and a Starbase.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, February 21, 2022 - 10:23 am: Edit

CT2 Combat

The small fights are over and result in a bunch of cripples being taken and a bunch of fixed defenses dying and planets being conquered.

In 0902, Dice were 4-4-4-2-5 for the Coalition and 4-1-5-5-6 for the Alliance over five rounds, with the 6 being an autokill. The Kzinti took a few cripples to extend the fight and the Coalition took a good number of cripples to win it; since going to 1001 would have been a fighting retreat (since the planet was captured and there was no base there) the Kzinti retreated to 1002.

On 1304, combat continues; with both reserves and virtually every cruiser in the fleet, the Kzinti have been fighting hard, putting up lines above 130 (depending on the needed EW) and through three rounds, have rolled 4-6-6 against the Coalition's 4-4-3. To win, the Kzinti probably have to take a pile of cripples and keep rolling the nuts, but it can still happen (and no doubt will if the Kzinti have any real chance of saving the base.)

Note that the Kzinti were late taking SIDS in both battles because they either worried about losing the base too soon, or, possibly, forgot they could burn damage this way for a minute.

Full report with ship obituaries to follow.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, February 21, 2022 - 06:12 pm: Edit

Combat is over on CT2:

The Kzinti have retreated from SB1304 and the Coalition is triumphant in every engagement this turn. The dice were ramarkably even: Coalition at 3.66 for the turn vs. an Alliance average of 3.71. However, the details matter, and the Coalition took some heavy losses because the 3.71 included =three= Alliance autokills in starbase defense. The Kzinti burned all 48 free points of DBB, and then stopped bombarding (the free Aux Drone ships are all in 1401 and unengaged):

Crippled:2xFF, 2xCLE, CL, EFF, 3xFFK, 3xBC, 4xDD

Lyrans:

Crippled: 5xE4,10xF5, F5L, E4A, 6xD5, D6, 2xF5L, 2xD6M, 2xD7C, 2xD7

I think that this turn mostly counts as "nothing, either way," for the purposes of strategic progress. Neither side lost anything they can't replace except the things that always go (Kzinti fixed defenses). Both sides probably took a little more damage than they meant to, maybe a little more on the Coalition side (just due to the "mauler" effect of autokills), but then, they can afford a lot more repairs and replacements than the Alliance for a while still.

More commentary to come in the thread for that...

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 26, 2022 - 05:13 pm: Edit

Coalition Turn 2 is over.

The Lyrans and a few Tholian Border ships strategic move to the north, and all reserves are set in 1307 (amounting to all Klingon and Lyran new production plus a few stray Klingons converted or coming from TBS).

The Far Stars Fleet has appeared in 0109, and together with the TBS not going North is a pretty strong signal that Hydrax will be under assault before long...

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, February 26, 2022 - 08:22 pm: Edit

Alliance Turn 2 has begun.

The Alliance realizes it didn't roll survey on AT1, so it rolls it now: 1,3,5 for 9, followed by 2,3,5 for 10 on turn 2, with the Kzinti missing on their first province by 1 and the 2 EPs they'll never see again.

However, salvage from 3 BC's and a CC that died on CT2 is in the bank, so the Kzinti have the cash to do all the things, or at least most of the things:

Eventually, it made sense to build the PDUs; the last thing I want to do is lose both shipyards, no matter what the Coalition cripple backlog looks like.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, February 27, 2022 - 05:55 pm: Edit

The Alliance chooses not to raid (because their fast ships are needed for operations and defense (DNL)'s or were misplaced by the high command on AT1 (BF)'s) and there weren't really any targets anyway because with relatively little territory taken over the Coalition has reaction possible to almost every raid target, at least with a fighter squadron.

In movement, the Duke's fleet sends its cripples to 1802 for repair and then backs away from the Klingons and runs to 1101, where elements of the Red Claw Fleet react in and pin it to the planet (currently under Lyran control).

Elements of the Kzinti Home Fleet fly across, pin the Red Claw (even after additional Red Claw ships react in) and attack the Lyran ships remaining in 0902 to guard the backline.

Since the Kzinti don't have enough ships to win both battles handily, they don't try to get greedy (as they maybe wanted to) and also attack the FF in 0703. Instead, the Count's Fleet in 1002 splits up and joins the two battles already in progress.

The Kzinti move both BF's to the capital, and the cripples from the Count's fleet and the remaining Duke's cripples to the off map area for repairs.

There are two combat hexes:

In 0902, the Kzinti have 16 ships (and 13 fighters) against a BC,SC,CW and seven frigates.

In 1001, the Kzinti have 54 ships and 44 fighters against 44 Lyrans.

Of course, the Kzinti may not want to cripple a bunch of ships just to make the Lyrans designate a supply tug next turn. But these battles are both 7 hexes from the Coalition reserves in 1307, so there is that...

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, March 06, 2022 - 05:28 pm: Edit

Well, terrible things have happened.

In 0902, everything went according to Hoyle, and the Lyrans withdrew and retreated, sacrificing SC,FF for the privileged.

In 1001, the dice were about even, but the Alliance was overconfident and spent a couple of rounds monkeying around with what could be directed and directing big ships. As a result, the fighters ran out early and by the time the Lyrans retreated, the Kzinti had a big pile of cripples of their own.

This will have major consequences on CT3, when the Kzinti Capital comes under attack and is required to be defended. However, the Coalition will miss its cripples too, one supposes, since they won't be back until at least CT4 and not in the Kzinti Capital until CT5.

AT2 is over!

The Kzinti basically pull everything back to the Capital, using strategic movement to set up a strong (ish) reserve offmap and one in the Marquis area, both of which are probably coming back to the Capital anyway and both of which are led by DNL flagships (so only 11 ships with a scout). Except for 16 repair of cripples on 1802, all cripples are offmap.

1001 is under Kzinti control, but not defended. Whether this will matter is unclear, but it at least means the Lyrans have no supply to 1401 next turn, as they do not have an MB setting up from CT2 (they may on CT3, but that won't help them on CT3).

Casualties:

Kzinti:
Killed: DD,BC,CLD
Crippled: 2xBC, 2xCLE, 4xEFF, 2xCL,2xFF,FH,FFK, DD

Lyran:
Killed: CC,CF,DD, SC,FF (and 2 CW no salvage)
Crippled: 14xDD,4xCW, CL

Looking at the tale of the tape this looks almost okay for the Alliance, but it really isn't. The repair bill just gives the Lyrans something to spend money on, and the Kzinti don't have it to spend.

The Lyrans had some extra EPs, so they arrange to build a full schedule, add an FRD, and do other things that appear to be sensible. They also arrange to send EPs to the Klingons for CT4. Nothing too fancy, and they have plenty of banked EPs for future repairs, overbuilds, or (as Trent has intimated) carriers.
