@Richard. I'm this happy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hopNAI8Pefg

@Paul: I don't think this rule change consequence was intended. I think it's an unintended result.

Unless, you can read 537.11 as being any two of the list, including two of the same (i.e., can have 2 G ships to prevent auto-rebellion).

Which means you *can* stop auto-rebellion on a planet fairly easily.

As an aside: In my other current game (Conflagration) we're playing that way so that planets do not automatically go into rebellion.

I currently have official Q&A up on the new 537 issues.

Happiness is mandatory. Failure to be happy will result in reassignment to garrison duty on Hydrax until happiness quota is achieved.

Are you happy?

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Monday, April 04, 2022 - 03:03 pm: Edit

Yes. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

Operational movement is complete. The Coalition succeed in all 8 raids, six in Fed space, the other two in Kzinti territory (I think).

The Klingons invade the Federation, attacking most of the Fed BATS on the Klingon border as well as the 7th Fleet starbase.

In the Marquise area, the Coalition attack a BATS and the planet, but both attacks will be foiled by reserves.

The Coalition also send a raid against 1401, probably to redevastate the planets there.

In Hydran space, the Coalition are reducing the last on map Hydran planet and have sent a large force to try and attack SB 0215, which is defended by most of the remaining Hydran fleet.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - 04:26 pm: Edit

Battle hex 0215 just finished the FIFTEENTH round of battle. Both sides have almost all their ships crippled; the Coalition has been self killing sometimes for tactical reasons. It's a bloodbath.
The Hydrans are down to 29 fighter factors; they started with 199.

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - 05:02 pm: Edit

I have been keeping careful notes for this battle. I knew that it would be close, and that I would need some luck to take down the SB. So, I carefully have kept track of his remaining defpot, my remaining defpot, rolls made, damage done, etc. Since I had good luck at the beginning phases of the battle, I elected to see if I could take this to the end and watch Richard cripple more or less the entire Hydran fleet.

Theoretically I could still be forced to retreat if I suffer a few bad rolls from here. But the Hydran fleet will still be mush regardless, for some time to come. And the SB now has 7*SIDS.

The butcher bill will be heavy, regardless.

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - 07:27 pm: Edit

When I said nearly the ENTIRE Hydran navy was crippled, I wasn't kidding. This is what is NOT crippled of the Hydran Navy, as of CT7 end:

2*LN, SA, CU, GRV, 3*FCR, LAV.

In addition, there are 2*FLG, 4*POL, PV.

EVERYTHING else is crippled. This includes:

2*PAL, 2*LGE, 2*LB, 2*LM, 5*RN, 8*DG, 2*THR, D6D (CAPTURED), 4*TR, 8*HR, 2*LN, 5*KN, 3*CR, 17*CU, 16*HN, 2*DE, PGS, 4*SC, 2*LNG, 2*HNG, 4*TG, AND 4*FFT.

285 Repair points, 142.5 EPs. Though, of course, the depot is going to make a HUGE difference to the true cost of repairs.

Hydran KIA: RN*, FFT, SAS*, FTS* (slow pursuit), 2*SAV* (slow pursuit)

The Hydrans gave better than they got, of course (fighting over a SB and all). Of the 100 or so Coalition SEQ that hit up SB215 this turn, the following are KIA ("*" means directed):

Klingon: D6M*, D6D*, 3*D5, 2*F5L, 3*F5, 3*E4, D6J*, F5J*, {CVT, AD5, F5E}* (CV group was crippled and supporting fighters forward in the SE - yes, that's how brutal the battle got at the end).

Lyran: DNL*, BC*, STJ*, 3*CW, DW

Coalition losses: 26.82 SEQ.

Hydran losses: 4.75 SEQ.

Net SEQ shift: -22.07 SEQ in favor of the Alliance.

Coalition WIA:
Klingon: D6M, FD7, 3*D5, F5L, 4*F5, 12*E4, 2*{D6V,AD5,F5E}, {D5V,AD5,F5E}, 2*{D6V,2*F5E}, {D6V,F5L,F5E}, D6D, 5*F5S, D6G.

Lyran: 2*CC, CA, 5*CW, 3*DW, FF, {TGC+V,CWE,DWE}, CLS, 5*DWS, 2*DDG.

Total repair points: 205, for a cost of 102.5 EPs. Which I'm likely to actually pay over time in order to get the ships on the line against the Federation faster.

My uncrippled units left: 2*TGA+AL, D7, 3*D6D, E4R, 2*F5J, 2*F5G, 7*FF, DWS, CLS, FCR.

Probably too much damage for just killing a SB - I over-committed, I think. On the other hand, the Hydrans have no more hard points on-map.

BIG MONEY, BIG CARNAGE!

I probably would have bugged out early, but my rolls were generally very good. The last set of rolls was the slow pursuit round. Damage done is what was *actually* applied after minus points each round, which is why the numbers might look wonky.

Total number of combat roll sets: 19 (18 rounds plus slow pursuit).
Average VBIR roll: 3.611
Coalition average combat roll: 3.556
Alliance average combat roll: 3.278

Of greatest importance here is that, as can be seen, many of my high rolls and many of his low rolls were in the first 8-10 rounds of the battle. That made a big difference to victory with forces evenly matched as they were. Note I'm not saying I "won" because of luck, only that I committed to go the distance because of the rolls I observed. In some ways this decision favors Richard due to the major loss of Coalition SEQ. On the other hand, I will pretty much rule the Hydran roost for many turns to come...

It remains to be seen whether these events have any significant impact on the overall course of the game.

Still, huge, exciting battle!

Note that not all of the Hydran ships were uncrippled before battle hex 0215, quite a lot were crippled from 0617.

By Ted Fay (Catwhoeatsphoto) on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - 07:43 pm: Edit

Other battles:

Coalition re-devastates the outer planets at the Kzinti capital system. This costs me some more SEQ to directed ships, but I killed his small escorts in return, so roughly a wash at 1401.

The initial attack on the Federation was very anemic. This game was in abeyance for many months due to RL issues, so I can't really self-reflect and know why I screwed it up. I typically like to cross the border with at least 150 ships, and I think had maybe just under 100 this game. As a result, I only bagged the border BATS and the 7th Fleet SB (which is pretty easy game, after all). No real damage was done to the Federation economy on CT7.

Also, I left Marquis mostly alone. I made a half-hearted attempt to kill some BATS and planets there, but reserves (1 Fed, 1 Zin) saved them. I didn't have the units in the theater to both take on Marquis *and* re-devastate the Kzinti capital system outer planets - and they would have recovered this turn had I not devastated them. Hence, I decided to wait to take on Marquis SB.

It's *hardly* game over for me, but I generally find myself in a better board position at the end of CT7 in most games I play Coalition. I suspect the reason for the weaker offensive position is the fact that Richard is honestly the best F&E player I go up against... So, hat's off to you, Richard. Maybe there's better players out there, but I have yet to play against you!

The game remains quite interesting, of course.

Correct. Thanks for clarifying.

I commingled Hydran cripples that occurred during the battle with those that occurred at 617 (he started in 215 with MANY cripples from the 617 battle). However, I went through the emails. Here's the Hydran WIA, just from the 215 battle:

PAL, 2*LGE, 2*BT, 2*LB, 2*LM, RN, DG (TWICE), THR, 4*HR, TR (TWICE), 5*KN, 5*CU, 4*HN, PGS, SC, LNG, FFT, TG+S

"Twice" indicates that Richard used RCR to repair the ship (7 EPs for that!)

I also forgot to list something else the Hydrans lost at 215: an FRD.

Sadly, I didn't play in a game with him long enough to really appreciate that fact. He is missed. :(

Oh, yes, you also got their wheelbarrow.

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 - 08:08 pm: Edit

The Coalition destroyed 191 out of 199 Hydran fighter factors located at 0215 (that's why a lot of Hydran cripples were there - to contribute their fighter factors).

Now, that's funny right there!

By Paul Howard (Raven) on Saturday, April 23, 2022 - 03:40 am: Edit

I would guess both sides will need slightly more than just a hammer to 'bang some dents' out of those ships?

6 DG's, LN, 5 x KN, 6 x HN is 6 turns of Depot repairs...

... so how many years worth of free repairs you willing to allocate ships to?

And will the 2 x Pal and 2 x LGE go through Depot?

By William Jockusch (Verybadcat) on Saturday, April 23, 2022 - 08:08 am: Edit

One imagines the Hydrans don't have 142EPs. And even if they were to skip their shipyard, accumulating them would take approximately forever. Therefore, heavy depot use has to make sense for them.

And with the depot available, skipping the yard probably makes less sense than it does in the basic game.

Well, "forever" is a *slight* exaggeration.

As can be seen, Hydran eco is roughly 30 EPs/turn (for 4 turns), but after 4 more turns the guild will run dry. But he has other ways of finagling income (more survey, HRS, raids of occupied provinces) so I'll call it a wash for the foreseeable future.

He has paid off the national debt this turn. The medium yard is 8 EPs per turn, leaving 22 income. Assume a couple of EPs for the odd fighter here and there and/or conversion (like the beautiful DG->LB CDR conversion he's probably going to do with all the DGs). Maybe a PRD.

Anyhoo, at 20 EPs/turn it would take 140/20 = 7 turns to work through repairs, but after including the depot that number is likely closer to 4-5.

The Hydran fleet will soon be back, and in greater numbers...

I am not saying the Hydran are 'OK' - but with the Medium Ship yard, Depots and Guild Money, the Hydrans are actually going to recover fairly quickly.

The TR and CR are ideal candidates for the depot :)

The question is - would the Hydrans spend the balance of 42 Ep's to upgrade it to the Main Shipyard?

By Richard Eitzen (Rbeitzen) on Monday, April 25, 2022 - 03:20 pm: Edit

Probably not, considering minor shipyards are a thing. They would though, if they retake and can keep 0617.
