AT4 Raids:
----------

The Coalition left some solo ships out in the ether in Kzinti space, so the BF's in the raid force are attempting to clear planet 1001 (Lyran FF) and hex 1304 (Lyran FF).

The Hydrans do not have such opportunities due to doubled-up proper province raiding being undertaken, and therefore just raid some Lyran provinces for the halibut.

AT4 Operational Movement.

The Hydrans move the 2nd fleet to clean up province raiders. The only other thing in range was 0411, and the Hydrans don't have anything like the guns necessary to destroy 0411 and the Lyran fleet defending it. The Hydrans in 0617 and 0716 are more greedy, hitting province raiders and also sending decent sized fleets to BATS 1011 and BATS 1013, the former of which could be a delayed attempt to get to Kzinti space (or could have been if the Klingons had "taken advantage of the opportunity" to cut them out of supply).

The Kzinti likewise attack everything in sight, including Lyran BATS 0705, which will fall, and Klingon BATS 1706 (which may be saved by a reserve).

Battle hexes include:

0214 (four Hydrans including a cruiser against DD,FF)
0614 (the remainder of the second fleet (less PGSes and an FCR) against DD,FF)
0705 (ten good Kzinti against BATS and a crippled war cruiser waiting for repair)
0915 (RNx2,CU,HN vs. 2xF5)
1003 (BC,3xFF vs. F5)
1011 (17 Hydrans against 13 Klingons and a BATS (two of the Klingons being crippled E4s waiting for repair, the remainder is the Klingon 4th reserve)
1013 (The Hydran 1st Fleet (31 SEQ) against 45 SEQ of Klingons, a BATS, and a crippled TGA awaiting repair)
1017 (2xRN,CU,HN vs. 2xF5)
1105 (The Duke's Fleet (33 SEQ) vs. 7 Lyran DDs as well as the original garrison F5L)
1116 (RN,3xCU vs 2xF5)
1219 (2xRN,CU,HN vs. 2xF5)
1503 (BC,3xFF vs. E4)
1504 (The Count's Fleet (27 SEQ) vs. the Klingon 1st - 3rd Reserves and a garrison frigate)
1707 (10 decent Kzinti including 2xCVL vs. BATS, a cripple, and the massive Lyran 1st Reserve)

AT4 Combat

...is over (with one exception).

[The exception. In hex 0705, the Lyrans had a single CW. Our view was that it had to be on the line, so the Kzinti killed it. The interaction with a base defense and fighters isn't 100% clear, however. So if not, the CW will live.]

In general, the Alliance killed some ships and the Coalition lost a few ships it can replace fairly easily. The Alliance did get one mauler before it can be used in 1401, but at the cost of getting a scout tug crippled (only rolls saved it from death in pursuit).

The only battles that looked like they might matter were 1504 (where the Coalition had the advantage but the Alliance had a fair number of fighters), 1011 (Where the Hydrans had the edge but the Klingons fought anyway because it didn't make sense not to), and 1013, where the Hydrans could have fought more, but retreated after a single round given that they didn't want to lose more cripples. All three kind of fizzled (1011 had the most combat.)

The Casualties:

Kzinti
Killed: EFF
Crippled: 2xFF, TTS

Hydran

Crippled: HR,TR

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Wednesday, May 04, 2022 - 03:20 am: Edit

The Alliance fell back predictably to the capitals, with some ships on SB0716 and SB0215, but nothing really impressive. The Hydrans have one nice and one small reserve in 0519 (out of range of being pinned) but it probably ends up having to go to the capital regardless. The Kzinti have ships on 1502, 1202, about a battle line each, and the rest in the capital except that they maintain two reserves in the off map, each of which is basically a 10 point CR ship + a CV group + a bunch of FF's.

CT5 Operational Movement

The Coalition skips raids, and has a MB active in 1407 so no need for supply tugs anymore.
Instead they put 35 ships on 1502, spread out to hit all the planets except Zimdars, generally with a battle line or less, and then send it to the Capital (29 Lyrans, 105 Klingons including mostly all the big stuff that was in range). Ships from 1202 react back to the capital, and there are enough left to move to (probably) attack that as well. Other than eight ships on 1502 there are no Kzinti active outside the Capital (although they have two pretty good reserves in the offmap.)

Lots of ships left to move (Trent will add some commentary on Econs at some point).

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, May 07, 2022 - 10:21 pm: Edit

CT5 Op., Continued...

The Klingons fling 70 some odd ships at the Hydran Capital, and 33 more at 0716. The Lyrans hit 0215 with 29 ships and 0416 with eight, and both factions send some frigates to round up provinces. By the end, about half of Hydran space is contested by the Coalition. Notably, there is a Lyran MB setting up in 0914, where it will provide supply on the capital.

A few things left to move, including (I think) the Klingons in 1214, who need to move FRDs to 0914 to make it a retrograde point.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 08, 2022 - 12:38 pm: Edit

CT5 operational movement is over and reserves have been dispatched.

The Alliance is playing maximally as promised, dispatching reserves to defend 0716, 1001, and 1105 and leaving the defenses in the respective Capital systems with only the Hydran 1st Reserve actually dispatched home. Combat Hexes include:

0215 : A strong Lyran fleet of 29 ships against a not particularly strong force of Hydrans with fewer ships and less quality. Starbase 0215 is, probably, going down.
0416: An undefended planet being attacked by eight Lyrans.
0617: 75 not particularly amazing Klingons and Lyrans against about 55 Hydrans (but including LGE, 2xPAL) and all the defenses.
0716: 33 Klingons that couldn't reach 0617 against a decent, and reinforced Hydran defense.
1001: Eight Lyrans against a strong Kzinti reserve
1105: 9 Lyrans and Klingons against a strong Kzinti reserve
1401: 140-odd Coalition ships against 110 Kzinti, 4 PDU on Kzintai, and the home Starbase. The Kzinti are confident, but are going to feel very dumb if they lose.
1502: 35 Coalition ships against eight defenders.

And off we go.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 08, 2022 - 10:00 pm: Edit

Combat has begun and is mostly complete in the North, with the Galactic South still to go.

The Kzinti defended 1001 and 1105 with reserves, but lost 1502 to a very high quality Coalition fleet of over thirty ships.

In the capital, the Coalition came straight for the shipyard, and I have no other explanation than "their dice sucked." The Coalition rolled 1-1-2-2 against the Alliance 5-2-5-6 (with an autokill), killing a few ships, crippling a bunch, and sending the Coalition home early without a good chance of destroying the Capital Starbase. The Kzinti did burn their one and only command point... and they lost all remaining PDUs over Kzintai.

What happens in Hydran space remains to be seen but the dice were brutal in 1401.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 15, 2022 - 01:52 am: Edit

Combat is over on Coalition Turn 5.

In Hydran space, the Coalition stayed only one round in the Capital and retreated from the Expedition starbase, but destroyed 0215 and took 0416 with little drama and fairly limited casualties.

The Coalition therefore goes into Turn 6 without a captured capital, but the ability to potentially taken two in fairly short order; next turn the Lyrans will have supply on the Hydran capital, and the Coalition is unlikely to roll under 2 over four rounds again. The Coalition has its cripples under control and has pretty much eliminated the alternatives (other targets are thin on the ground) to dropping massive fleets on capitals on CT6.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 15, 2022 - 02:20 pm: Edit

Coalition Retrograde and Reserves
---------------------------------

The Coalition mostly retreats out to 1407 again, to prepare the final assault (we assume) on Kzintai, now denuded of PDUs. In the South the Lyrans retreat to 0411 and to the new joint forces outpost at 0914. 0416, 0215, and province 0213 are all garrisoned, as is east Hydran space. The Coalition is apparently all but inviting the Kzinti on 1105 into their backfield, no doubt because stepping into Coalition space would leave them unable to retrograde to 1401.

Klingon Reserves include 10, 7, and 11 ship reserves in 1407 and four frigates in 1013.

Lyran production goes north, with a stonking 11 ship reserve in 1407.

Map as of the End of Coalition Turn 5

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 15, 2022 - 02:31 pm: Edit

Alliance Turn 5 Economics
-------------------------

With no PDUs on Kzintai, the Kzinti are free to buy ships, so they buy ships, including a tug, and they purchase an additional command point on the assumption that a command point spent on CT6 will mean an extra ship on the line throughout the final defense of the capital. There won't be any opportunities to spend command points this good for the Kzinti for probably 10 turns, if ever, so buying one now seems like an obvious choice, even at the cost of a couple of CM's being downshifted. One point this turn is that the Coalition didn't kill a lot of ships, so both the Kzinti and Lyrans are short of economic gas without significant salvage rights. Too bad scavenging PDUs isn't a thing.

The Hydrans are even more strapped for cash, with the need to build PDUs to avoid losing two capitals, so they mostly just make two DE's and then build what frigates they can, looking to get ahead of the Coalition for now in order to hopefully build better ships later. How well this will go with likely devastations coming even without a shipyard assault, who knows... But the Coalition is starting to stack up cripples (although CT6 will probably see the backlog finally cleared out, it is also likely to generate some new ones).

Alliance Raids
--------------
The Alliance raids 0301, 0705, 0214 and 0614.

0301: the Lyrans can react in, but given the best they could do is a CW, presumably they will avoid the risk and just see what happens between the Kzinti BF and an abstract POL they don't have to repair or replace.
0705: The Kzinti take advantage of the missing BATS to disrupt a province without the possibility of reaction.
0214: A lone province raider (a Lyran FF) is ambushed by a THR.
0614: A lone province raider (a Lyran DD) is ambushed by a THR.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, May 15, 2022 - 04:04 pm: Edit

Alliance Raids - Resolution
---------------------------

In 0301, the Alliance rolls a 9 and the Coalition rolls a 7, with (+2, -5) for a BF vs. a POL, resulting in zero casualties for the Alliance and four casualties for the Coalition. The province is disrupted and the BF remains undamaged.

In 0705, the Alliance rolls a 7 and the Coalition rolls a 7, with (+2, -5) for a BF vs. a POL, resulting in zero casualties for the Alliance and two casualties for the Coalition. The province is disrupted and the BF remains undamaged.

In 0214, the Alliance rolls a 6 and the Coalition rolls a 4, with (+3, -6) for a THR vs. an FF, resulting in zero casualties for the Alliance and three casualties for the Coalition. The province is liberated, and the FF is destroyed.

In 0614, the Alliance rolls a 9 and the Coalition rolls a 9, with (+3, -6) for a THR vs. a DD, resulting in zero casualties for the Alliance and five casualties for the Coalition. The province is liberated, and the DD is destroyed.

[Correction:

Due to a formula reference being off in the Hydrans' economic spreadsheet, the Hydrans have discovered another couple of EPs (former turn treasury was not transferring correctly), which they have squirrelled away on the theory that they will want it in Y171.]

Alliance Operational Movement
-----------------------------

In Hydran space, the Hydrans clean up some pickets, send four SEQ into Lyran space to see if they can draw a reaction, and fail to draw the Coalition out. The Hydrans send about 40 SEQ at the Klingon/Lyran FRD setup, get pinned out, and shrug their shoulders and go back to killing pickets. The only thing they successfully "get to" is BATS 1214, where they have sufficient force to kill the BATS and the only reserve in range will be unable to stop them.

The Kzinti drop forces on the picket in 1401 and the planet in 1502 (where the adjacent picket in 1503 reacts in), and planet 1504. They then send their main fleet to 1506, apparently trying to fight the Lyrans and Klingons who could totally react out and almost certainly save the planet... but the Coalition refuses to be drawn (the Kzinti Baron's Fleet in 1506 is essentially all good carrier lines, so the Kzinti could foreseeably dump fighters, inflict cripples, and get away mostly clean; the Coalition clearly thinks that 2.2 EP is a small price to pay to NOT fight that battle, especially seeing as they almost certainly intend to fight hard in 1401 next turn.)

The Kzinti attack pickets in 1004, and send last turn's reserves to attack BATS 0906 and 1107 (from 1001 and 1105, respectively). The pickets in 1004 could certainly be saved by a reserve, and probably either BATS as well, although both BATS are notably 7 hexes from Kzintai...

Which all leaves the following combat hexes:

0216: 3 Hydrans picking off an FF.
0416: 8 Hydrans picking of DD and F5 at a planet. A 4-ship reserve is in range, but probably this isn't where it ends up.
0713: A bunch of Hydrans (the rest of the 2nd fleet) unsuccessfully trying to pull Klingons out of the FRD park to protect an E4.
0906: About 8 Kzinti are attacking a BATS.
0915: 40 Hydrans attacking an E4 and having 40 plus Klingons react in to keep them out of 0914.
1004: Two Klingons are being attacked by three (better) Kzinti.
1017: 8 Hydrans against 3 F5s, two of which reacted in.
1107: 12 Kzinti against a BATS and a crippled Lyran DD.
1214: 12 Hydrans attacking a BATS. A reserve (the same 4 E4s that could get to 0416) is in range.
1402: A bunch of Kzinti including AUX carriers against a lonely Lyran FF.
1502: A bunch of Kzinti including AUX carriers against 4 Klingons.
1504: A bunch of Kzinti against two Klingons.
1506: A giant and quality Kzinti fleet against... two Klingons who are really frustrated that the 200-some SEQ in 1407 didn't bother to come save them.

Coalition Reserve Movement on Alliance Turn 5
---------------------------------------------

All four reserves in 1407 go to 1402 (3 Klingon, one Lyran). The four ships in 1013 go to 0915 to maybe discourage the Hydrans from fighting it out. The Coalition now has the advantage in 1402 (meaning the Kzinti probably have to deal with a slow unit retreat) but everywhere else the Alliance will win their fights, gods willing.

Alliance Turn 5 is Over
-----------------------

The Alliance rolled well in a lot of irrelevant battles, but mostly the dice didn't matter because the Coalition (with one exception) didn't come out to play this turn, and as a result, the battles that did occur were mostly of the "Dead FF, retreats" variety.

The exception was 1402, where the Kzinti found themselves in hot water due to the presence of four Coalition reserves, and chose to do everything possible to avoid losing an Aux Carrier, pitching ships into the bin and almost failing anyway... only the minus points assigned to the pursuit battle saved the SAV from death (it was escorted by DD,FF). 2 of the 5 minus points were assigned to the fast pursuit, and 3 to the slow... if it had been the other way around, the SAV died.

[I am pretty sure we actually did a slow pursuit right for once, including the Coalition getting four extra ships for the slow pursuit due to the presence of escorts.]

Still, the actual pursuit was brutal, with two useful Kzinti dying no salvage only one hex from the Capital.

The Klingons got burned by the 15-row, where some forced retreats (due to the unavailability of 1402 and the lineup of supply zones) allowed the Kzinti to kill a couple of extra E4s. The Klingons also got burned by bad dice allowing the Hydrans to unexpectedly shoot down a D6M with exactly 28 damage.

Still, ultimately not a bloody turn at all.

The tale of the tape:

Kzinti
Killed: BC, FF (and DD,FFK no salvage)
Crippled: None.

Hydran
Killed: LN
Crippled: HN

Lyran
Killed: FF
Crippled:

Klingon
Killed: D6M, 2xF5, 6xE4, 3xBATS
Crippled: 3xD5, D7, D7C

In retrograde and strategic movement, the Alliance just retreats everything to the Capitals (except that the Kzinti have two reserves off map and the Hydrans have a small fleet on 0716.)

From Trent:

I play the Coalition. Coalition Turn 6 with the Lyrans, I made a mauler but didn't substitute the second CA into something else because I need to convert it to DN. This is Y171, so the Lyrans finally get good carriers. Thus I substituted a CVL and some various supercool Lyran escorts which don't lose offensive COMPOT. The Klingons can now make a D7V, so they do that. I also made FCR's, and various other fun things.

The B10 rolled a 6, averaging something between 5 and 6 per roll so far. :0

Coalition Operational Movement On CT6
-------------------------------------

[The Klingons found another 5 EP of repairs in 0914, actually more than that... but they only have 5 EP of capacity and the Lyrans are out of EPs. So they repair a few more ships (2xD7,F5S) in 0914 and reduce their treasury by 5.] Too many fleet boxes...

The Coalition spreads some ships through Kzinti space, mostly vanilla D6's, E4's, and things that could not make it to 1401 anyway because they were too far West or South at the beginning of the turn. The Coalition retains a backlog of cripples in 1407 (about 15 SEQ) but everything else in range goes to 1401 (no reaction movement by the Kzintis.) The Kzinti do have two middling reserves in the off map, but they may be wanted in 1401.

The Hydran front sees a pinning fleet go to 0717 and then back off to the Starbase after the Lyrans pile in, so the entire southern Coalition fleet is on 0716 and the Hydrans are mostly embarrassed in the Capital listening to news reports (although they have 18 SEQ set as reserves which will go to 0716 to make it more expensive or maybe go save 0416, which is a devastated planet attacked by a solo Lyran DD. The Lyrans attack the province raiders (2xHN) in 0212, and the neighboring raider join the party so there are six Lyrans attacking CR, 3xHN in that hex.

Reserves are next.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, May 30, 2022 - 02:38 pm: Edit

The writing is on the wall; the Kzinti have sent reserves to 1504 and 1202 to hold those planets and left the capital alone.

The Hydrans save planet 0416 and send their larger reserve to SB 0716 to make that fight slightly more expensive for the Coalition.

Battle Hexes:

0212: Six Lyrans ambushing 4 Hydran province raiders.
0416: A Hydran reserve destroying a Lyran DD which was trying to retake the empty planet.
0716: The majority of the Lyran and Klingon fleets (something upwards of 140 SEQ) attacking a Hydran Starbase defended by about 40 ships (although led by a PAL).
1001: Lyrans retake an undefended devastated planet.
1105: Klingons and Lyrans retake an undefended devastated planet.
1202: A D6 battle line against a Kzinti reserve. The Coalition will lose a ship or two.
1401: 166 Coalition and 44 fighters against 120-some Kzinti, 145 fighters, and a Starbase.
1502: A D6 battle line against a Kzinti reserve. The Coalition will lose a ship or two.
1504: Klingons retake an undefended devastated planet.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, May 30, 2022 - 07:40 pm: Edit

Combat:

In 0212, 0416, 1001, and 1105 no rolling was required. The Coalition gave a Lyran DD (0416) and took a Hydran HN (0212), and captured two undefended planets.

In 1202, the Klingons lost two E4 and retreated, and we moved on to 1401.

In the capital, approach was (predictably?) declined and the Coalition went straight for the shipyard. So far dice have been pretty even and (especially in the later rounds) pretty weak. The Coalition did score a coup when the Alliance forgot to take an escorted LAV off the line when they spooled up the COMPOT, and they got LAV+BCE with a mauler. [The round could have been a lot worse; due to a miscalculation of the Coalition line, we thought for a few moments that the Coalition had 62 and a Mauler... but we had counted the Coalition flagship DN twice, at the beginning and the end, so they were a little short.]

The Alliance has mostly been directing good ships rather than dropping, and no one has gone into full drop mode yet; the Coalition needs the SB out of the way and the Alliance doesn't want to drop damage if there is any chance that they can lose...
