Alliance Raiding Activity AT7
-----------------------------
Everybody goes for abstract POL disruption rather than trying to kill any ships, as Trent has been better about doubling up:

Federation:
BF vs. POL in 1610, 2016, 2117
Kzinti:
BF vs. POL in 705, 906
Hydran:
THR vs. POL in 1214, 1314.

Alliance Turn 7 Operational Movement
------------------------------------
The Federation shuffles ships around, executing the first part of their plan to convert a massive number of ships on AT8:

Two DD's from the 7th fleet move from the south to 2808 and 2211. Two DN's and a CA (one of the DN's is new construction) from the Home fleet move to 2808, 2907, and 3008. The mothball DD moves to 2907 as well.

Most of the Home fleet moves to 2311 to defend the Starbase, and the CVLs and GSC (no COV's in this game) from the Second Fleet move to 2304.

The detachment from the 5th Fleet moves towards the Capital, but leaves behind some ships that will move by Strategic Movement. They stop in 3005 in order to have strategic movement available on AT8 if appropriate.

The three TG's in 2908 grab V pods, and the tugs in 2204 and 2211 become BT's. Three FFT's in the Capital prepare to run guns to the Kzinti, and the fourth FFT retreats to 2808 for repairs.

And then maybe some ships go engage the enemy? Hmmm. Maybe that would be a good idea...

Alliance Turn 7 Operational Movement, Continued
-----------------------------------------------

In Hydran space, the locals just attack all of the available province raiders, clearing out most of Hydran space (although there is a Lyran reserve which may interfere in 0914) rather than getting in a big pinning battle over trying to get into the Coalition FRD park or something, which didn't seem super productive. The Hydrans also send two HN's into Lyran space to hold the empty province south of the SB.

Combat Hexes here include:

0416, where a Hydran force designed to be bigger than the available reserve is attacking the tiny garrison of Lyrans.
0716, where a Hydran force designed to be bigger than the available reserve is attacking two E4s.
1017, where a Hydran force designed to be bigger than the available reserve is attacking six Klingons, four of which reacted in.
In 0114, two LGE's are attacking CW,FF.

In Kzinti space, the locals also don't deign to fight big pinning battles, and go attack province raiders instead, including some deep in the West, where there will be something close to 20-25 decent Kzinti and no Lyrans at all apart from two CL on a BATS on the Lyran side of the border. Combat Hexes include:

0601: A small Kzinti fleet against a Lyran CW
0703: A small Kzinti fleet against a Lyran CW
1001: Kzinti TGV,FF against a Lyran CW.
1401: 30 Kzinti against 8 Klingons (6 of which, predictably, are E4's. There are two pretty strong Klingon reserves in range, but it seems unlikely the Klingons can actually win here.)
1502: 25 Kzinti against a Klingon pair of garrison ships.
1504: 23 Kzinti against a Klingon pair of garrison ships (this actually moved first to avoid reaction from the big fleet in 1506.)

The Kzinti also take over some Kzinti-Fed NZ hexes and move their cripples to 1802 and the off map area for repairs next turn. 1105, 1506, and BATS 1707 are left alone...

The Federation seeks out combat a little bit more assiduously, but still has only a couple of real attacks:

1807: Most of the 4th fleet lands on the BATS here, fooling around a little bit first to take available NZ hexes. Even with the 12 extra NCL and FF from balance points being assigned here, they may not have enough to resist the Klingon reserves (if this is where they go).
2416: The Feds have almost 40 ships from the 3rd and 7th fleets against 23 uncrippled Klingons (and a crippled F5 that thought it was getting repaired). There are no reserves in range, so the BATS is probably going down.

Reserves are next.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, July 16, 2022 - 06:29 pm: Edit

All Klingon reserves go to 1807 to fight the Federation. There, the forces are now roughly level, and perhaps even favoring the Coalition. Otherwise combat may be quick... the Lyran Reserve in 0914 didn't see a fight that was to its liking, and stays put.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, July 16, 2022 - 10:08 pm: Edit

And combat is quickly concluded, since only a couple of hexes even required dice:

The Feds in 2416 could have kept fighting and maybe obtained a pursuit, but they had gotten a nice exchange in directed ships and would still be fighting a shift, so they decided that since getting an NCL directed left them able to take all their fighters and no cripples (and avoid a pursuit) they would just leave, having shot the BATS down in one round at BIR 10.

Otherwise, a quick approach battle in 1807 and a lot of withdrawal before combat. The Coalition reacted BATS fighters out in three places, saving a CW and providing replacement fighters in 2416.

Retrograde and the Feds' superfancy plans for strategic movement are next.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Saturday, July 16, 2022 - 10:39 pm: Edit

The Alliance follows its usual strategy of falling back on hardpoints, but since there aren't any big Coalition fleets in range of 1001, the Kzinti keep a fleet there to menace 0404. The Feds leave a defensive fleet on Arcturus and bring the rest of their active forces to 2204 and 2211.

The Hydrans, though tempted to menace 0411, stay in the Capital, although they have two reserves set.

In Strategic movement, the Federation has 13 free strat plus the ability to move converts and new construction.

Short of ships, the Federation sets only two reserves, both in 2011, one of ten ships and one of five.

The Kzinti have one weak reserve in the offmap (but useful: 2xMEC,FKE,MSC are included).

Another '5' is rolled for the B10, as apparently a lot of Klingon engineers are having epiphanies or something. So far, the Klingons have rolled 32 out of a possible 36 pips for the B10. They and the Lyrans continue to tank their exploration rolls, however.

Coalition Operational Movement on CT8

In Kzinti space, the Coalition first pins the main Kzinti fleet at 1802. The Coalition fleet there isn't actually overpowering, but they presumably have the ships (120+) to SIDS down the base if they choose to do so.

Following that, the Klingons and Lyrans fan out through Kzinti space, attacking almost all provinces and planet 1202 (where 28 Kzinti from 1001 react in) and then 1001 (empty after reaction), maintain 1105, and attack empty planets 1504, 1502, and the empty Kzinti Capital.

In Federation space, the Klingons aren't particularly ambitious. They avoid the well defended starbases and attack everything they can without allowing reaction, including BATS 2308 and planet 2509. Further south, BATS 2414 and 2612, as well as BATS 3016, are under attack.

In Hydran space, the Klingons and Lyrans move back into northern Hydran space, and start playing pinning games circling the capital... as they are a few ships short to get in this turn. They are creating combat hexes all around in an attempt to create opportunities.

Many ships still to move in this area.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, July 31, 2022 - 01:21 am: Edit

In Hydran space, something genuinely new, at least for our games. Trent went all out to test my counting abilities and launched four separate attacks on 0617, each of which were... eventually... pinned out of the capital by the Hydran fleet, which outnumbered the available Klingons and Lyrans by something like 6 SEQ (after the obligatory province raiders). Giving up on holding any territory for a turn to sneak half a dozen ships in and kill a couple of PDUs didn't seem like a fantastic trade. What actually happens is anyone's guess; there are five combat hexes all adjacent to each other, so retreats are going to be... interesting.

Combat Hexes Include:

0416: Every ship remaining in the Hydran reserves that didn't react out (2xLB,SC,and a few frigates) against Lyran CW,2xDW,DD.
0517: About a dozen and a half Lyrans against a Hydran pinning force
0616: About a dozen and a half Lyrans against a Hydran pinning force
0716: Two Klingons who got jumped on by LM,3xCU when they came in to raid a province.
0717: About a dozen and a half Lyrans against a Hydran pinning force, reinforced by the remainder of the West Fleet and the Hydran defenders, to the tune of 67 SEQ or so per side.
0718: Some Coalition against - again - just about the same number of Hydrans, but here including the IC.
Planet 1001: Lyrans recapturing against an RDF
Planet 1102: Klingons attacking a planet and being contested by Kzinti who reacted from 1001. The Coalition has the numbers to take the planet, but the Kzinti can certainly burn their fighters first and so on.
Planets in 1401/1502/1504: Klingons killing RDFs.
Starbase 1802: 100 Kzinti and Feds outnumbered by about 20 ships by the Klingons and Lyrans. The SIDS route will certainly allow the Coalition to destroy the Starbase, but any real fight here is going to be expensive.
BATS 2308: A small BATS busting brigade is attacking a BATS that didn't have a fleet nearby;
BATS 2414: A small BATS busting brigade is attacking a BATS that didn't have a fleet nearby;
Planet 2509: A small Klingon force attacking a planet and being met by a reserve; the Feds should hold.
BATS 2612: A small BATS busting brigade is attacking a BATS that didn't have a fleet nearby;
2817: 6 reacted-out BATS fighters against D5,F5. The Fighters will die, but this was a "why not" move.
BATS 3016: A small BATS busting brigade is attacking a BATS that didn't have a fleet nearby.

18 Combat hexes, by my count. This may be the biggest number of discrete hexes yet!

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, July 31, 2022 - 02:17 pm: Edit

Into Combat on CT8.

In hex 0513 (which I forgot above) the Hydrans give an HN and retreat into the increasingly poorly named neutral zone.

In hex 0717, two giant space fleets meet, each side zaps a frigate, and the Alliance retreats back into the capital.

In hex 0716, the Alliance kills an E4 and both sides retreat, the Alliance to 0616 and the Coalition to 0815.

Much much more to come.

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Monday, August 01, 2022 - 05:15 pm: Edit

In hexes 0616 and 0516, each side traded ships and the Hydrans immediately retreated back to the capital. No pursuits were attempted.

The Klingons have destroyed BATS 2414, 2308, 2612, and 3016 with minor losses (a few cripples plus fighters).

By Graham Cridland (Grahamcridland) on Sunday, August 07, 2022 - 02:24 pm: Edit

Combat is over on Coalition Turn 8, which turned out to be a little bit of a damp squib due to the Coalition having a bit of a ship shortage with some 60 SEQ getting repaired and another 30 SEQ awaiting repair. As a result, they did not press the action over Starbase/Planet 1802, just showing up to kill the PDUs and the Federation 4 point scout, hitting a spite SIDS, and walking. (The Kzinti had no fast ship (both DNLs are dead and both BFs are in the raid pool), so a '6' failed pursuit for the good guys.)

Retrograde is next, but it is a busy Sunday so it may not happen this week. Probably, the attack on 1802 was poorly chosen this turn, but it isn't a huge deal; trading a few cripples that there is room for next turn on the FRDs and a few D6/D7 hulls for 2xPDU,SC, and SIDS isn't awful.

And the Coalition will be up 60 hulls next turn after strategic movement brings up their cripples, so this was very much a partial turn off for the Alliance, which won't come again with the hulls coming back for CT9 and the Romulans joining CT10.

And CT8 is over!

The Coalition leaves some garrison ships scattered about but mostly retreats to 1407, 0914, and Sherman's Planet.

There are two big Klingon reserves in the North, one in the capital, and one in the South, and two Lyrans north and one South.

On to AT8!

Alliance Turn 8 Kzinti Economy

The Kzinti are, of course, still without a shipyard, but they have a fair number of EPs what with the Federation sending them stuff, and can at least make the best of it (and pay off their DBB debt from CT8).

The game has been going a little slower, so Shipyard Installment 2 seemed like it was slow in coming, and the Kzinti won't be making ships for a long time (except FCR,FKE, or after 1802 falls, just FCR).

The Kzinti do have a lot of juicy province raider type targets, and they can get into Klingon territory from 1802. They no longer have supply on Lyran space, however, as 1202 has finally fallen leaving 1802 the only remaining Kzinti outpost on map.

Alliance Turn 8 Hydran Economy

With a still-robust economy the Hydrans focus on building ships and getting fighters on the map:

The Hydrans have no repairs and are in great fighting shape, but apart from province raiders they really don't have a lot of ability to actually do anything; the Coalition has reinforced 0914 over the turn (so probably no way to get in, pending a precise count), and the loss of everything north of the --16 line means there isn't a way to get to 0411 anymore; the Hydran front is a standoff (right up until the Coalition stops sending most everything north and comes to kill them).

Alliance Turn 8 Federation Economy

The Feds have oodles of cash, but thus far have foregone overbuilds, perhaps on the theory that they have one more turn to think about it before they -need- them, for the Romulans (who, remember, enter on CT10 with a boatload of extra Kestrels this game).

However, as promised they convert using pretty much every eligible point of conversion capacity this turn; almost every DD in the fleet is now a DE, and almost every DN a DN+. Of course, they're all scattered, so this turn will involve a lot of futzing around to get ships where they need to go.

For the second turn, the Feds spend EPs to get all possible medium carrier builds out (but forego the potential FFV), and get the extra SWAC. The Kzinti are down to 2 strategic movement, so rather than spend an EP to deliver 5 EP, the Feds just use only two FFT's for that purpose this turn, and strand one poor transport crew in the Kzinti offmap.

With this many conversions, the Feds will at least have the opportunity to appoint decent reserves this turn.

The Federation noticed that their CFS conversion was going poorly, because they made the mistake of starting with a CA instead of a CF. They hastily amended the orders, converting a CAD in the Capital at Andoria and instead of a CAD, a CA->CC conversion in the 5th Fleet.

Those responsible have been sacked.

This being the Federation, no doubt they will go on to lucrative civilian employment designing new and different survey carriers.
