also, any chance you could set it up so if we double click on a fleet it opens up?

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Sunday, December 12, 2021 - 08:05 pm: Edit

No. Vassal has no knowledge of such things. It might be possible with some custom coding, but I don't touch that.

...Now the windows can be opened with a key command.... I could probably have the right counter give the command for the correct window, but it would take some work. (And might end with every fleet window opening at once. >.>; )

Yes, where color ends, so does the official 'board' that the counts come from. At the moment, I do not plan on making things much bigger from a screen real-estate perspective. However, 2.1 will have larger windows for the home fleets, and re-done windows for the reserves.

Excellent, James, do continue.

Any chance we can get Tactical Ops in a few weeks? :D

By Bill Phillips (Praetor) on Sunday, January 16, 2022 - 02:29 pm: Edit

In Vassal the Stats

0315:0(0SE): 12-12 (0H6) [0H0] 1EW 0G

represent
0(0SE) is ship equivalents
12-12 is attack-defense
(0H6) Is fighters
[0H0] is spare fighters
!EW is electronic warfare
0G is ground troops (marines)

Is this a correct interpretation ?

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 - 12:03 pm: Edit

The "0" is the number of ships, and the "(0SE)" is the number of ship equivalents. The rest is correct. This is described in the user manual PDF that comes in the module zip package.

As for Tac Ops, I need to get on that. Shouldn't be too hard, but most of my free time is being taken up with another project. ;)

By Stewart Frazier (Frazikar3) on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 - 05:33 pm: Edit

You know, there should be 1 in the SE as the fighters do count for that ...

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 - 08:24 pm: Edit

That's more advanced math than the module is capable of, sadly. You get to divide the fighter count by 6 and add them in on your own.

Overall, the SE count isn't very useful, though it can make you aware of shifts caused by fast/X-ships. I'm hoping someday the stack viewer will get more functionality, and then it can at least adjust for cripples, but at the moment that isn't even possible.

Hi all, Im trying to download F&E module 2.0 but the link to the .zip file on here seems to have died.

Does anyone know of a working link? Or can the link be looked at?

Thanks !

Try downloading from here:

https://vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:Federation_%26_Empire

I just tried it, and was able to download the file.

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 - 08:04 am: Edit

Huh. We both tried that last night, and it was a non functioning link (i.e. you clicked the download button, and nothing happened).

Maybe it was a short term glitch?

By Peter Bakija (Bakija) on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 - 08:04 am: Edit

Huh. It does seem to be working now. Weird.

By Jason Langdon (Jaspar) on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 - 08:29 am: Edit

Its working for me now, but I think it was at my end. Windows 11 being overly secure.

Hi, James!

Any news about the new vassal module?

I can't wait to add Tac Ops to my games.

As a follow up question: is it feasible to create expansions that would add new F&E modules to the existing vassal module (like the Battleship for everybody expansion) or is it easier to add them directly to an updated vassal module?

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Soeren Klein

As I intimated, I'm busy with a big non-F&E project. :( I've gotten the Feds and most of the Klingons done, and stalled as I haven't had the spare time.

Technically, extensions vs main module is about a wash, but it's slightly easier to do testing and fixes all in the main module, and it's the only way to really sort everything out where they should be in the menus, so all officially printed/released ships end up there.

Thanks for the answer, James!

James,

Would you object to others working on the Vassal module?

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Monday, November 21, 2022 - 02:39 pm: Edit

No objections as such. Someone contacted me bit ago with an idea to help, and it got shoved off the 'current' pile during a crazy week. I also have a large map file for the Reptilicon scenario donated by a user.

However, I've been meaning to post an update as it is. I'm currently down to once-a-month releases instead of twice-a-month, and have been getting some graphics and module time with the lower pace. I am now through the Kzintis for adding TO ships, and am on vacation next week, so hopefully, I'll get through at least the Gorns then.

By Philippe Le Bas (Phil76) on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 - 02:01 am: Edit

I have drawn the ships as 70x70 pixels counters. Lyrans and Feds are done (all ships from SITs, including TO and CL ships). Kzintis , Klingons and Roms are well advanced.

The 70x70 allows to have detailled ships, which graphics are based upon those from master ships books.

I may share them.

Personally, I much prefer the 'flat' graphics. Makes it much easier to see what belongs to whom. They do all however, come from vector files, so sizes can be changed, though of course, counter graphic size is always one of the biggest underpinnings of a module, since it determines how big the grids need to be in the charts and the map.

I also always prefer to keep counter size as minimal as possible, it makes the overall module smaller, and causes fewer issues with setting up appropriate zoom levels for everything. (So many modules way overdo the graphics size, and then put the default zoom way too small, catching you both ways...)

(This is what the counters look like to me; I put way too much detail in those silhouettes.)

James

How about increasing the size of the fleet area board inside the fleet markers by one row and one column? The reporting would benefit as there would be less ships to show up inn the report 'off board'.

Also The Fed, Klingon and ISC could all use a few extra fleets/squadrons. Maybe along the lines of the Lyran Duchy Fleets (subset into the list) Example: Klingon Squadrons: Sword, Dagger, Blood...

A second battle board would be great.

By James Lowry (Rindis) on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 - 12:26 pm: Edit

The upcoming v2.1 has some of this already. Notably, everyone's home fleet box has been expanded. I also made the reserve boxes smaller, but added a battle force graphic to them, so you can lay them out properly.

I'm always up to add new fleet boxes, especially for the main suspects. The problem is always names. The Klingon squadrons sound good, I'll have to look at that. Feds, I can always add another numbered fleet to....

By Lawrence Bergen (Lar) on Tuesday, December 06, 2022 - 02:24 pm: Edit

Awesome on the RESV idea. Thanks!
Larger board area for the fleets will help the search function.

In the Cyberboard, I started to add squadrons from map planet names. This could be done logically as you already have county fleets for the Lyrans.

Squadrons could be listed under each of the main fleets.
For instance:
Klingon East Fleet could have a Klomarth Squadron
Klingon North Fleet could have at least two: A Farlin Squadron and Bakuria Squadron.

I suppose you could also follow The Fleet markers on ADBs website too but you have to make choices for clarity as some of these appear to have two names.

By Paul Shutter (Cusimanse) on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 - 12:43 pm: Edit

As an idea for additional Fleet/squadron names, you could follow the Fed/Klingon model and add TFs/BGs named after their dreadnaughts/carriers. Other Fed/Gorn fleets could be subsets of the fleets: TF21 though 29, etc...

And I agree that the fleet boxes should be at least a little larger, though for me it's more my opponent likes to spread his ships out and they are only counted by the fleet if they are in the colored area.

I guess I should wait until 2.1 is done, but I was thinking of adding the Tactical Operations units (which should be in 2.1 so no need to do that) and attach all the warbook documents to the vassal vmod so I can access them directly in vassal. Of course, those change (and I think I need to wait for TO to be incorporated into the regular SiT instead of being a separate file) but once you start a game you need to freeze that sort of thing. Another thing I would like to do to make the job easier is have an Excel file for each race that handles the economics including many calculations.
