A quick Earth question or two.

Does the Earth government use the United Nations flag, as shown in the Technical Manual?

Also, there's a proposed flag for a would-be 'United Nations Parliamentary Assembly' - as shown here.

Could this flag be the symbol of the Earth parliament, if it's not already?

1. Dunno, I guess, maybe. Perhaps Jean and John S should figure that out for the Feds book. You might mentin it to them.

2. Not unless whoever owns it gives us permission for free. (Seems to be a real world thing that the real owners aren't going to even talk to us about. Perhaps we might invent something evolutionary from that starting point?)

Noted.

Actually, is the UFP seal from the front cover of the Technical Manual eligible also, or is it too similar to the Great Seal of the Unmentioned Franchise of Paramount logo to work?

And what about the various other member government logos within (such as, say, the banner and cygnat of the 'Planetary Confederation of 40 Eridani', which I'm guessing covers Vulcan in SFU terms) for that matter?

If new ones need be made, fair enough, but it would be a nice nod to the source material if the Technical Manual's names and logos are used, if available.

According to the information page for the UNPA logo, it seems to be available under the GNU Free Documentation Licence.

But if that is not useful here, some kind of equivalent logo for the Earth Parliament could be worked up - but I guess it would depend on whether or not SFU-Earth uses the UN name and logo itself or not.

I frankly do not plan to use those or see any need to create new ones. We didn't have a seal for the Klingon subject worlds or the three gorn worlds.

But we do have emblems (and formal names) for the five Inter-Stellar Concordium member governments - which is somewhat ironic, given that the 'logo' usually shown for the ISC itself is actually the ship insignia for the dreadnought Concordium (DN-01).

And we have all of those Lyran counties and duchies, too (even before we get to the LDR).

The Technical Manual only gives logos for five member governments - Earth, Alpha-Centauri, 40 Eridani (Vulcan) 61 Cygni and Epsilon Indii (whichever worlds they correspond to, if any).

However, those five (or at least the three we can match SFU member races to) are among the founders of the Federation, and would have flown racial starships in the era prior to the establishment of Star Fleet.

As seen with the ISC founding planets, these worlds were at the core of the Federation's shift from an alliance to a government.

And even then, there are plenty of places where one will see provincial/state flags fly alongside federal ones, not least in Canada and the United States.

Now, I wouldn't ask for an array of flags to match all of the myriad of UFP member states, especially not the members which joined after the rise of Star Fleet - or rather, after the era of racial National Guard ships.

However, for the core group of founding member species - not least ones like Vulcan, which was a star-faring species for centuries prior to First Contact - it's a different story, so long as it didn't take up too much room to use the Technical Manual logos for the purpose, that is.

Gary, I agree with SVC. Not going there. Doesn't matter what other empires did, not going to go there with the UFP.

A pity - but, well, at least I tried.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, July 05, 2009 - 11:56 pm: Edit

I don't see it being "a pity" that extraneous and generally useless information was found unnecessary.

By Andrew Gelbman (Madprophet) on Sunday, July 26, 2009 - 11:32 pm: Edit

I have to agree with SVC on this one, just google for Federation or Star Trek Earth logos and you will find scads of them on the internet. Pick the one's you like for your campaign.

Use the space saved in the RPG books for more background information.

The minutiae of the universe should be left to each GM to work out on his/her own.

Question - since the SFU license appears to cover the Animated Series (at least in part - we get the Kzinti from it, as well as the Klingon Stasis Field), will the Federation RPG book cover the Trek Animated Series non-humanoid Federation races?

For example:
- the feline Caitians (Lt M'Ress)
- the tripodal Edosians (Lt Arex)

(those two being 'Enterprise' bridge officers spring right to mind - could have sworn there were a few others, but not coming right up front)

Well...er...um...not quite...mumble, mumble [shuffle feet]...

How about them Mets?

I don't think they're allowed to include elements of the series not already included, so no.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Saturday, November 28, 2009 - 10:11 am: Edit

Terry is correct. If we haven't already included an element (such as a weapon or a ship), species, or system, we don't get to add it now.

QUESTION? RIMWORLD AND CYCLOPS?

Can anyone remind me where the stories where these two worlds were printed?

DaleF, if you see this, please be advised that I have an Excel spreadsheet where I can plug in data like Star color & class, orbital year, mean distance of a planet from a star, as well as a dozen other factors such as mean surface temp, percentage of the surface covered by water, Axial tilt, and then calculate any missing factors so as to have a complete astronomical dataset of a planet and its moons.

That is why I'm hunting for these story(s). :)

By Jonathan Jordan (Arcturusv) on Monday, December 14, 2009 - 01:27 am: Edit

Rimworld, cover fiction story for... captain's log 27? Yes, it was in Captain's Log 27.

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Monday, December 14, 2009 - 02:32 am: Edit

Jonathan, thank you! Now I gotta figure out where my copy is hiding.

By Jonathan Jordan (Arcturusv) on Monday, December 14, 2009 - 11:42 pm: Edit

Scoured my Captain's Logs, including the Index of Planets, and could not find Cyclops, sorry. I am missing quite a few of the recent ones, so maybe it's in there.

By Ryan Opel (Ryan) on Monday, December 14, 2009 - 11:51 pm: Edit

Cyclops is the name of one of the planets in the system from th story about the Battle of Rimworld from CL27.

... Idiot, it was right in front of my face...

By Randy O. Green (Hollywood750) on Thursday, December 17, 2009 - 08:06 pm: Edit

Gary Plana, you sent me a spreadsheet one time that had the entire Rimworld system... not sure if I still have it but I can look if you want me too.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Thursday, December 17, 2009 - 08:19 pm: Edit

Randy, I have that setup, but we think the original survey report may have had corrupted data going back to the AF tapes. We're working on it!

By Gary Plana (Garyplana) on Friday, December 18, 2009 - 12:44 am: Edit

Randy, Thanks, I found it on a backup. You jarred my memoy enough to make me look :)
