Aaargh, this is all turning rather morbid...

Makes Kzintis feasting on captured enemies look tame.

Gives a different perspective on what Sigvirion infection or Arachnid assimilation means to those affected by it in-universe, perhaps.

(At least in the case of the Arachnids, you can get the original personality back if you somehow find a way to get rid of the parasite - though I don't know if the host remains conscious of what the Arachnid is doing with the host body or not. With the Sigs, once they take over a host, the original mind is gone forever...)

One of our greatest scientific minds is like that. The effort it takes to simply choose a word, and yet he writes whole books.
Mr. Hawking is astounding by nature.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 07:56 am: Edit

Since G.O.D. has not come to Loren's aid . . .

* Gives Loren a pillow so he can sit more comfortably *

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 11:25 am: Edit

Ahhhh. That's better. Thanks.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 11:49 am: Edit

If it helps, we can crack open a Vortex and have the Human Republic ship you a handy suit of Powered Battle Armor to help with the moving around thing...

...oh wait, they're still in playtest. Sorry.

By Terence Sean Terry O'Carroll (Terryoc) on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 09:36 pm: Edit

Well if we're helping Loren with fictional gadgets, why not just drop him in an autodoc from Larry Niven's Known Space yarns?

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 09:43 pm: Edit

Because I wanted to stay within the bounds of the Star Fleet Universe - or of those parts currently in development, at least.

By Stacy Brian Bartley (Bartley) on Tuesday, February 09, 2010 - 10:10 pm: Edit

Wait...we're HELPING Loren?

Stacy:O

In that case, I'll send him an Orion Slavegirl physiotherapist skilled in, uh, "therapeutic" massage.

Red Alert! Shields up!

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 08:28 pm: Edit

Loren, you forgot to commence Erratic Maneuvering(rule C10.0) to gain that extra +4 (natural) Electronic Warfare benefit!

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 10:09 pm: Edit

If he played Orions more often he wouldn't make such mistakes. Tsk,tsk, tsk.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 - 10:54 pm: Edit

If he played Orions, then his ships (many of them, actually) would have the +2 stealth bonus "built in"!

this is what happens when one places too much reliance on those pesky Tholian Web Generators thingys.

Not enough to have lost an antire (old) Galaxy, now Loren is flirting with getting kicked out of this one as well!

Still its better than getting Whanged by a #8 Griswold across ones knees!

Back in Captain's Log #25, there was a quote made near the end of the story First Encounter by Fleet Captain Thomas Hemmingway, which he used to highlight how the Andromedan Invasion had driven former foes to unite against a common threat:

Quote:

As the Andorians once said, 'us and the humans against the Rigellians, us and the Rigellians against the Klingons, us and the Klingons against the Andromedans.'

My question is this:

Is there anything in the early period of contact between Andoria, Earth and Rigel IV (either actual conflict or some sort of political tension) which could explain the first part of this phrase - or did the person who coined the phrase go for a dash of exaggeration?

(Even if the question can't be answered now, I'd ask mainly for it to be considered, or not, as part of the historical discussion for PD Federation.)

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Monday, February 15, 2010 - 11:40 pm: Edit

Busy with F&E 2010. Ask again next year.

By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 12:00 am: Edit

Gary, truly, asking any questions now will not get an answer. They won't show up as "new" after a day, so we won't see them.

You need to hold on to your questions until next week, say the 25th or so. I don't have the time to do the research to answer your questions because I am very involved in proofreading F&E-2010. (I just got through with what was a very long phone call with SVC going through stylebook changes.) SPP is even more involved. SVC is writing the thing.

At least SVC won't see my changes and SPP's on the same piece of paper. The last time that happened was in Amarillo on a Ship Card and SVC squawked when he saw "an ocean of green and purple!"

I'd suggest that you then parse out the questions so you can get feedback to see if that is something we are even covering. PD Feds is limited in the amount of space we can give history, so we are going to only be hitting the high spots (think of the moguls in mogul skiing) and hoping we don't crash.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 12:13 am: Edit

Gary: that is just the andorian mindset. No need to explain it, nothing to explain it, it's just how they are.

Jean, that quote is cool, so let's add it to the book.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 12:23 am: Edit

Duly noted, and thanks for the Andorian clarification.

I'll try to rein in my usual annoying self until after the Olympics.

Or, at least, the usual annoying self that manifests here and at the FC forum, I guess!

(When it comes to hitting the high points, I reckon that both PD Feds and F&E2010 will do as well as my adopted country's latest sporting hero!

2010 is going to be quite a year.)

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 11:05 am: Edit

I thought about it, Gary, and here's my theory.

Andoria is an ice planet. Survival day to day is not guaranteed (at least not until a century or two ago). There is no "long term view" because nobody is sure there will be one. Hence, there is no "alliances based on long term interests" but only "short term tactical alliances". They view the Klingon invasion (and the Andros) the same way they view the next blizzard. Something to get past, never mind next month, we need to survive the next two days.

By Gary Carney (Nerroth) on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 12:43 pm: Edit

So, if there was some degree of tension - diplomatic or otherwise - between Andoria and Rigel IV prior to Y4, and it was seen by the Andorians that Earth was supporting the Andorian claim, they might have taken it as 'us and the humans against the Rigellians'... even if the humans and Rigellians at the time didn't see it the same way.

(Say, if there was a disputed colony planet or system - which may have been awarded to Andoria under a deal brokered by Earth, as the price of gaining Andorian support for the eventual founding of the Federation.)

Sounds reasonable.

(And this time, I really will leave this thread alone until after the Games...)

By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Saturday, February 20, 2010 - 11:40 pm: Edit

Jean, when you are caught up again...Does the Federation have ranks that are equivalent to the US 4 star general, general of the army or General of the armies? I see a document for Federation enlisted ranks but not for Federation Officers.

By Ryan Opel (Ryan) on Sunday, February 21, 2010 - 01:49 am: Edit

They stories have mentioned Vice-Admirals and Admirals so I would say yes that they go up to the 4 star level.

Prime Directive has ranks up to 1 star. PD 1st Edition goes to 5 star.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Sunday, February 21, 2010 - 02:16 am: Edit

Feds have five star ranks. Actually, six, but not really. The five star officers include:

Admiral of the Fleet (nearly a dozen of those)
Admiral of the Fleets (just one of those)

Field Marshal of the National Guard (two dozen)
Grand Marshal of the National Guard (one)

Commandant of the Star Fleet Marines
