SVC, that sounds like a good play aid.
By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Sunday, February 21, 2010 - 12:45 pm: Edit |
Thank for the quick answer, and yes it would make a great play aid, but I really didn't want to bother you two until tuesday. I only posted it so I wouldn't forget.

(I said I'd wait until after the Olympics... but it seems I can't help but get ahead of myself. Still, this is not intended as a question to be considered before its due time - just left here for when the time is right.)
Will the list of ships detailed in PD Federation include the likes of the Orion National Guard DD?
Unlike in the rest of the Federation, the Orion Enclave is off-limits to the Police - which makes the Orion NG both the local defence and law enforcement* body within their home space. This makes their ships the only non-Terran hull types to remain in service within the Federation into and beyond the Middle Years - worth noting for anyone wanting to involve the Police in their campaigning.
(But then, PD Klingons doesn't have the Vudar ships which served that Enclave prior to its 'independence' - but they would have needed guidelines for Vudar starship tech to make work anyway.)
*Some in other parts of the Federation might consider them to be more like 'occasional law encouragement' forces, but how and ever...

The flap list isn't done yet, Gary, and the project isn't over until the flap list is done.

Gary, a lot of times the focus of the PD books is what makes the society run -- the "human"-side of the SFU (to be a bit species-centric). The rest of the SFU focuses on the ships.
If you look at the Klingon book, the Fed book will have much the same type of information. There will be information of ships, but it is more along the line of ships that are well known in the Federation.
But the book will also have history and background on the government and important political figures. There is information about various species and their culture. You'll learn more about the Fralli.
We do hope, in the future, to get out a book on the Orions, but work hasn't even started on that. When it does, then it will probably have much the same mix of information in it.

SVC:
Duly noted...
Jean:
So, basically the Vudar example is the most apt one, when it comes to how the Orion Enclave is to be handled.
Fair enough.
I suppose that might beg the question as to where the ships of the Orion and Vudar Enclaves would one day be detailed, in PD format at least - but that's likely a question for another day.
(Just like most of my other ones, sadly.)
Would there at least be a note for any Federation Police and National Guard hulls to be included in PD Feds, to clarify that neither sets of ships are to be found within Orion Enclave space (either operating with the Orion National Guard/Police, or deploying from another part of the Federation)*? Unlike the case of the Vudar, the Orion exception has been a more clearly-defined one, in terms of its legal (and public) status.
*I'm not sure if they ever took any of the ships interned during the era of neutrality during the General War and pressed them into service, though.

You know, that is something to look forward to in PD Orions. I've never given much thought to the Orion enclave police. What an interesting organization that must be.

Gary, most details about the Orions are going to be in PD Orions, not PD Feds. We touch enough on the Orions that you could play them and interact with the Federation as members of the Federation, but they are not the focus of PD Federation.
Again, ships are not the focus of any PD product. We try to have deckplans of a small ship and a brief description of the common ships, but we don't tend to go into a lot of detail. The people who want that sort of detail can usually get it in the SFB products or in CL ship history articles.
The RPGers that are backing into this line are either the folks who love the SFU and also role play or they are role players who like Star Trek.
If they are the former, they have the information.
If they are the latter, then usually they focus on characters and not ships. Ships are like horses -- they take you from adventure to adventure. Rarely do you get people who draw up detailed accounts/stats of horses (they exist, but not in huge numbers).
I think that both Gary Plana and I would like to see a book focusing on starships, but that is a future product, if it comes together.

I'd like to see Orion rank insignia.
How do Tholians denote rank, anyway?

It's not visible in the spectrum you can see Terry

I'm putting this question here in case it would be worth considering for PD Feds - but perhaps it might be handy to include in the PD section in a future Captain's Log, or something.
Could a list be included here (or in CL or an errata file or...) which shows both the year of first contact for each known Federation member species, as well as which year said member joined the UFP (as a full or associate member)?
For scenarios or stories set in particular years, it would be good to note which species are appropriate for that era - and could also set up interesting 'first generation of my species to serve in Star Fleet' dynamics for this or that species.

Sounds like a lot of work for no real purpose.
By Loren Knight (Loren) on Friday, March 26, 2010 - 08:37 pm: Edit |
I'm surprised that it's not already part of each Federation member's profil.
Although, IIRC, most of the main members were founding memebers or joined soon after, and I seem to remember those who joined later are noted (at least one race is anyway).
Then there are several associate members.
