Slirdarian Corporal, there is a large feast in the mess hall. You and your troops go have a nice leisurely meal. When you are all stuffed, take a nap. Then come and let Mr. Wile out.

By A. David Merritt (Adm) on Monday, April 08, 2013 - 08:15 pm: Edit

Slirdarian Corporal: Yes Ma'am.
Jeff; Actually, we prefer apples. I must point out it isn't our fault that you cracked all your ribs when you tried to play chest with one of my men.

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Monday, April 08, 2013 - 09:18 pm: Edit

Web Mom, With all due respect, you posted the following order:

Quote: " By Jean Sexton (Jsexton) on Friday, May 28, 2010 - 09:15 am: Edit

Jeff, don't encourage the Slirdarians to eat between meals. It is bad for their teeth and it also means extra workouts in the gym.

Jean
WebMom"

Stuffing me into the booth will not change the fact that you failed to rescind the orders concerning the Slirdarian squad that is supposed to keep me out of trouble.

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Monday, April 08, 2013 - 09:35 pm: Edit

jeff even Godzilla cant keep you out of trouble when you get on a roll

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, April 08, 2013 - 10:06 pm: Edit

Jean, just don't scramble his brain too much, or he'll cross-link the power cable to the comm ports and fry the computers.

"No feeding" and "no feeding between meals" are entirely different things.

And you are being "boothed" for suggesting Garth map out the plumbing. :)

By Jeff Wile (Jswile) on Tuesday, April 09, 2013 - 09:25 am: Edit

Garth, I would never intentionally damage the computers, it takes far too much time and effort to repair them.

Connecting the preasurized sewage discharge tanks to the washroom toilet most often used by Slirdarian Corporal, was much more satisfying.

(remote control diverter valve, $10.00 credits. Hearing Slirdarian Corporal cussing up a storm because he was showered in his own crap while using the toilet, priceless!)

(Note for ESS investigator: the diverter valve has been cleaned and refurbished, and returned to stores. Beg to report that the surveilance tapes for access to and from section 22, frame 98 have been mysteriously errased, all pannels, components and fittings have been cleaned and sterilized.)

Back to business.

Garth,

I know why you are considering placing the HVAC and sewage tanks in the tail cone...

the only objection I have is the lack of redundancy. Battle damage to the tail cone (as might happen for attacks from shield facings #3, #4 or #5) would possibly incapacitate the whole Life support, plumbing and waste recycling systems.

Since the Plumbing /freash water systems has to be distributed through out virtually the whole ship, might it make more sense to assume that there would be smaller reserve tanks distributed over the whole system?

That way, you could use the tail cone as designed for processing air and water, while the reserve tanks could be used as smaller septic processing units in the event of battle damage to the tail cone?

You wouldnt even need to represent the reserve tanks on the floor plan if they were situated in between the decks, in the natural void areas where the curvature of the hull makes the area unusable for personel.

Were Talking about Star Fleet, and it seems like "every thing" has secondary and tertiary back ups. I can't imagine that there wouldnt be some sort of provision for handling the air and water recycling systems in the event of battle damage.

Slidarian Corporal; Whatever species a "Jeff Wile" is, he makes a rather poor towel.

By Steve Cole (Stevecole) on Tuesday, April 09, 2013 - 11:44 am: Edit

Garth, I do need the wiring trunkways labeled for the highest voltage carried.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Tuesday, April 09, 2013 - 04:43 pm: Edit

Jeff, I've got some of that covered.

Example, it the septic system is that badly damaged, they'll just vent it to space. (All the plumbing in the Brig already vents to space ... no chance of a prisoner dropping something down the toilet to disable the ship.)

There's over 65,000 gallons of drinkable water in the tanks, but also an emergency 5- or 10-gallon bottle under every sink. Sorry, no showers until we get bakc to base, but at least you won't die of thirst.

I'm going to have the main CO2 scrubber in the tail cone (three decks up from the bio-waste) but also two smaller ones in the front part of the ship.

Garth,

At some point we might want to make a list of what equipment the Damage Control teams have available, and (as it might have an impact on deck plans) where it is located around the ship.

My initial thought is sort of a search and rescue team component for many modern urban fire departments.

1. Jaws of life
2. air compressor
3. emergency breathing equipment
4. tools (jack hammer? ax? sledge hammer? pry bar?)
5. power generator

Its not an exhaustive list, but it might make sense to cache some of the heavier items in a locker or overhead storage than to make the DC teams have to hump hundreds of pounds of equipment all over the ship every time they respond to an emergency.

Smaller items that might be included may include a portable CO2 scrubber incase the main CO2 Scrubber is off line and the smaller ones at the front of the ship might not be connected (due to battle damage) to engineering.

Just a thought.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 - 11:36 pm: Edit

Jeff,

I have tool lockers marked; I don't need to show what's in them. Do you need to go visit the booth again?

Although, that does help me define two of the fourteen rooms in Deck Five (Forward) that didn't have an assigned purpose yet.

A little bit of progress this week. Per comments from a reviewer, I added man-locks from Main Engineering and Emergency Bridge into the Impulse Engine bay. I'm not totally convinced they were needed, but as they look okay I'll leave them in.

Forensics lab is done. I thought about putting some analysis equipment (microscope, mass spectrometer, etc) on the tables, but that requires creating some new symbols that I don't have time for right now. Maybe later during final clean-up.

Four admin offices done. Eight more offices to go. I might take two pairs and turn them into single conference rooms, and then take the two conference rooms (which are a little smallish) and turn them into Damage Control equipment storage or evidence lockers.

Crew support area mostly done. I have four day-rooms (table / four chairs, "TV", four recliner chairs), two laundry rooms, two library/reading rooms (six general-use computer terminals), two game rooms (octagon table and eight chairs). I need to finish the ship stores (one barber's chair, selves of "stuff" one would buy at a shoppette, stock room in the back).

I have eight rooms, four to each side of the ship, on Deck Six (Forward), 3.25 x 6.0 meters with 3.5 meter ceiling heights (most of the ship has 2.75 meter ceilings) that I still need to define. Today, I turned one pair into the Forward Power Control rooms (voltage transformers, curcuit breaker panels). Another pair will be Forward CO2 Scrubbers, and another will be equipment for the PALS (Phased Array Lateral Sensors). Not sure what to do with the last pair of rooms. Maybe a back-up water recycling system.

I started on Sick Bay today, but didn't get much done before my god-daughter stopped by to show off her engagement ring. That kind of blew my whole afternoon.

One item that I haven't liked is the big open 10x20 meter space marked CARGO BAY. With the rest of the ship filled with furniture and equipment, it just looks so empty. Now, I do not want to just draw a bunch of palettes and crates just to fill the void.

But I had a new thought while eating lunch: what if I section the cargo bay off into areas (just lines, not walls) and label them with a typical cargo load of a police cutter on patrol.

On a small-scale version of the plans, I'd just have the text saying CARGO BAY, but on larger scale I'd have CARGO BAY in large text and then in smaller text have the different kinds of cargo marked.

I figure eight 5x5 meter areas should cover it all. But what to put in them? Here's just a few ideas off the top of my head:

TYPICAL CARGO LOAD -- Police Cutter on patrol
Emergency Shelters (tents / cots)
Emergency Rations
Rescue Equipment (like you'd find on a fire truck / rescue squad)
Field Hospital (ala M*A*S*H unit)
Small All-terrain Vehicles (ala Gator side-by-side)
Portable Life Support Equipment (to aid ships that have lost their life support)

Thoughts? Items to add to the list? Just generic categories, please -- I don't need to list every sledge hammer.

Haz-mat clean up gear

By Dixon Simpkins (Dixsimpkins) on Monday, April 15, 2013 - 02:16 pm: Edit

I wouldn't try to fill up the space entirely. There needs to be room for putting stuff in there while on patrol; contraband, evidence, salvage, prisoners, evacuees, etc.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, April 15, 2013 - 11:55 pm: Edit

Reid / John -- thanks. I can use a couple of those.

Dixon -- Valid point. Of course, I wouldn't put people (evacuees or prisoners) in the cargo bay unless and until I used up the gym and mess hall.

What about the Irish?

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 - 12:33 am: Edit

Loren, It's a police boat. Don't you know the cliche' that most cops are Irish?

Garth L. Getgen

By Loren Knight (Loren) on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 - 01:03 am: Edit

Indeed. Indeed. Here I'm thinking Blazing Saddles when the real cliche was right in front of me. Sheesh.

Well, I still haven't worked on the Sick Bay.

But I do have the mess hall / dinning room, galley / kitchen, and scullery / dishwashing area done. Finally! I'm about as happy with it as I think I'll ever be. It was harder than it should have been because I boxed myself in with placement of the spiral stairwells and turbolift shafts.

But, hey! If anyone has experience in the restaurant / cafeteria business, please send me an e-mail (see my profile). I'll send you a GIF, and you can tell me everything I did wrong with it. ;-)

I have the HVAC / CO2-scrubber system done. It looks pretty cool, if I say so myself. The bio-waste system is also done, and the water recycling in half-done. I'm going to run out of things to do as an excuse to not work on the sick bay.

Deck Six - forward section is done. At least, it was done enough that I sent SVC a couple GIF images. There are a couple very minor details I might want to change.

I screwed this deck up and had to fix it. I have eight rooms (four to each side) set aside to heavy equipment (life support, etc), but some time later I had forgotten why they were empty. So, I turned them into barracks space. It was later when I was working on Deck Five that I remembered the Deck Six has the higher ceiling heights and thus is the only place to put the heavy equipment. I had to go back and rip out everything, and then design all new hardware.

Much easier to do in CAD than real life. My poor back wouldn't be able to handle it. ;-)

Thus far, everything I've sent to SVC has passed the sixty-second test. That is, he only has a minute or two to glance it over, not all day to analyze it in detail. Nothing totally stupid jumps out at him. Ergo, I can press on for now but have to keep in the back of my mind that someday SVC will have a crew spend a week picking it apart at the seams. Hopefully, it won't all unravel.
