Star Fleet Universe Discussion Board: Prime Directive RPG: DECK PLANS PROJECTS: Fed Police ship: Archive through May 13, 2013

I woke up from a nap today with a "great idea". One item I'm not totally happy with is the placement of vertical shafts in the forward hull section. My thought was if I get rid of one set of stairwells (of two sets), I could move the one with the vertical HVAC shafts back to about the middle of the section.

Now, if you've read the article I co-authored with SVC on how to draft deck plans (shameless plug: http://www.starfleetgames.com/documents/deckplan/How_to_Draw_Starship_deck_p.pdf), you'll note my warning about trying to move a turbo-lift/stairwell/HVAC shaft after you've started filling in the surrounding areas. I should have heeded my own advice.

At first, I was thinking, "Yeah, this will work nicely, shouldn't be too hard to do". But then after the better part of an hour measuring and cross-checking a bunch of stuff, I figured out that I would have to redo most of Decks Four and Five. I found a place that works okay for those decks, but then Decks Three and Six are screwed up.

Ergo, I'm going to leave it alone. I don't really have a choice. While it "could" be done, it's just not worth the headaches at this point. So the HVAC/plumbing shafts are not in the most ideal location, but they'll work and is just going to have to do.

Maybe in a fiction story, I'll have an engineer complain about the stupid compromises the designer made when drafting the construction plans. ;-)

And I thought I had OCD. I thought I was obsessing over details. I have nothing on this guy:

Agreed Garth... This guy is NUTS! :)

That is a fellow with too much time on his hands. OCD or professional engineer I bet. :)

Just goes to show - ambition!

(*Yes, there's someone out there worse(?) than you*)

I finally designed a sickbay exam bed that I'm reasonable happy with. Now I just have to figure out how many I can fit in the space I have to work with. I also need to figure out what else needs to be in Sickbay.

Typing a checklist off the top of my head:

SICKBAY:
Doctor's Office (desk, cabinets, etc.)
Pharmacy locker
Exam beds
Crash carts
Recovery beds (can exam beds double for this?)
Surgical / Trauma area (surgery table, cart for tools, medical scanner, lights)
Body coolers
Lavatory
Wheelchairs
Gurneys
Go-Bag kits for Corpsmen

What else?

McCoy had a push-pedal arrangement for cardio, is that what you are calling the exam bed? Or is the exam bed more along the lines of an open MRI? I'm thinking a police ship shouldn't need to do the annual physical onboard, any rehab would be supervised in the gym.

I think the exam bed is where you put the patient to examine them and figure out what the heck is wrong with them.

Garth

The night stand with the pitcher of water ;)

Do not forget that in the TOS Space Seed they had a computer setup for the patients to use while a guest of the sick bay. Khan was reading up on the advancements in engineering.

Unfortunately a morgue

Nurse's station

I really want to work on the Sickbay. I have it half done (unless I rip is all back out -- AGAIN!), but my front yard looks like a jungle and needs mowed before we get two days of rain. Work before play. {sigh}

Cutting your grass is work? Maybe for you retired folks...LOL

Well, I finally have sickbay done. And of course, it was the last major piece of the puzzle. In short, the final draft of the entire ship is done. I printed it out at 1:200 scale for SVC to review. Then the changes begin.

I don't know how much more I should say at this time, but SVC has seen the final-draft of the police cutter deck plans. It helped I caught him on a good-mood day. Or maybe seeing them put him in a good mood. ;-)

Garth- awesome! Now get to work on the next Fed ship ;+) What is it? BB, DN?

I would nominate a base station as something really needed. They way most of my old Traveller games would work, bases stations are to sci-fi games like bars are to fantasy games. Great place for a fight or to start an adventure. Seem like bases where always getting mysteriously abandoned, or having hull breaches, or taken over by aliens, or some other catastrophe that had to be boarded, explored and fixed. Often we would chase some evil NPC around the base to get some information and then head to a nearby planet for the rest of the adventure.

I second the nomination for a Base Station, although I would suggest the Civilian version.

Base stations are too small, it really needs to be a Starbase. Hand-scribed on vellum and illuminated with gold leaf.

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Saturday, May 11, 2013 - 08:25 pm: Edit

Well, the only reason I would want to think about doing a base is because I need to get the diameter of the base to get the inside radius of the fighter hanger modules that will convert the Cutter into a Police Carrier. I mean, I already have the icon for the F18 fighters drawn up.

Garth. offhand I'd say that the BAMs are either 30 or 60 degrees (+/- 5), depending on whether their stacked on top of each other (A/B positions - 60) or side-by-side (30 each)...hmmm, check Module M to see what the BP entrances are listed [no rules near ATM]...

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Saturday, May 11, 2013 - 10:17 pm: Edit

Stewart, I figured the same angle, but I can't figure out the radius. I could try to reverse-engineer it by figuring out what works with the Cutter's dimentions, and then send that number to DJ-Dood to ask if he thinks it would be the right size. But that would just distract me from the current mission.

Well done on the progress made so far.

How many (if any) of the POL's hull variants do the current plans cover at this point in time?

By Reid Hupach (Gwbison) on Sunday, May 12, 2013 - 09:45 pm: Edit

garth,I was just sortin my baement a little and found that I have the fasa deckplans for the enterprize and the klingon d7 if you need to know any details give me a line ok

By Shawn Hantke (Shantke) on Monday, May 13, 2013 - 12:51 pm: Edit

I bet Garth will have plenty of time for deck plans now that he's chained to a desk at ADB. ;+)

By Garth L. Getgen (Sgt_G) on Monday, May 13, 2013 - 11:00 pm: Edit

Reid, thanks but I have them. I actually have two copies of the D7.

Gary, they're for the basic POL, with notes for the Plus refit. Some of the varients are more straight forward than others, and that would reflect in deck plans.
