"Come in Commodore."

M'Kee siddled in the room, his grey Gorn head high as he approached several seated figures around a holographic display. A series of star charts
lay before them. M'Kee felt as though he were interrupting his superiors, despite their invitation.

The commodore paused and waited. It was several seconds before Admiral Grinshk stood to address him.

"Commodore, this is your new problem," motioning to the glowing holographic display. AJAX EXPANSE clearly floating above the center. This was a sector M'Kee had not heard of, and that made him suddenly worried.

"You and the Hammerfall will leave with all possible speed. Upon arrival you will take command of the remains of the Ajax Expanse force. We have received word from our nearby colonies that the Klingons have made their presence known in the sector. This was a sector we previously believed to be out of their reach and one we unfortunately left under guarded. Last month we moved another destroyer to the area to support anti-piracy patrols and they spotted a Klingon patrol craft near our outpost at Brogith'St."

He approached Commodore M'Kee with a data pad.

"Your orders are to prevent a full war with the Klingons, but we must make our pressence known. We want you to isolate and defeat Klingon warships in single honorable starship combat. Likewise, we want to increase the available raw materials to the Gorn Confederation. This is all spelled out there. We suspect we will have more work for you soon."

M'Kee stared at the details of the mission. It was a vast system, and the Klingon's were suspect to some distance away. He spoke, "Is there any indication as to what the Klingons may be trying to accomplish here".

"Yes, our best guess indicates they are building a staging area against our allies. They clearly did not know of our colony worlds. This could be wrong, but I am confident you will learn the truth for us. Our intelligence indicates that their major colony in the area is in reality a conquered nuetral world. They may be willing to help us in some fashion."

M'Kee nodded.

"Then good luck commodore."

The Ajax Expanse is a Federation Admiral Campaign being played between Dale McKee and myself. We will be running Dale's portion of the game open ended so you can see some of the nuts and bolts of running a game turn, plus some of the decision making he has to make. New Minor Objective:

Commodore M'Kee awoke early that next morning. His ship was long underway from New Rixx, and the fleet was making excellent time. He hoped to get an early start on his work day, but was interrupted when his communication officer chimed in.

"Begging your pardon Commodore. We have a message from the Admiral. Standard only, no audio"

"Very good, put it through to my screen"

"I will need to acknowledge receipt of message for the Admiral"

"That is fine. Let me see it please."

"Yes sir, message relayed. The Committee on the Preservation for Distinct and Precious Species has asked to speak with you upon reception of this message, and acknowledgement of its contents."

"Very good Officer Grroik. That will be all." M'Kee flicked the comm terminal with a slight annoyance. He had a lot of new crew on this ship and tried to keep his patience. He already had a feeling about this message though.

The message from Admiral Grinshk began:
'Commodore M'Kee, you are hereby requested and required to aid in the study of the Pleides Swamp Eagle. The last of a rare species of animals must be tagged, and we need numbers to do this quickly. They have recently been spotted on Brogith'St and the Committee on the Preservation for Distinct and Precious Species has requested our help. The are expected to move in 7 weeks so the operations must be commenced by that point. One of their top scientists will lead the effort, they just need our troops to assist. There are some genetic similarities between the Pleides Swamp Eagle and ourselves so I don't have to tell you that there is a lot of interest on this one.

We must take one additional ground unit to the target System Hex, and deploy them for one full Turn. After which, we can begin tracking their movements.

"Chickensss?!" M'Kee rasped. "They want me to divert warssshipsss to herd chickensss?"

"Errr, no, sssir," hissed the cowering junior lieutenant. "It'sss the Pleidesss Ssswamp Eagle."

"I can read the ssstupid ssscreen," M'Kee sulked. Folding his reptilian arms over his silvery uniform tunic, the wily Gorn stuided his orders.

"Hasss the convoy finished loading up colonissstsss for the planet we're heading to sssurvey?" he inquired.

"Yesssir," was the response.

"Excrement," M'Kee rumbled. It would take a week to unload them and then another to load the Regulars that would be needed to investigate this space chicken, not to mention the time lost from setting up an additional small colony. Oh, curse the Three Suns for that never-ending spectre of Paravian Guilt! Anything that even remotely resembled a bird sent the Gorn Command into spasms of self-flagellation. He made a mental note not to ever mention that Federation delicacy he'd tried at the border... something called "Chicken McNuggets".

"Fine. Here's what we'll do..." the Commodore said, leaning forward in his chair...

"Very good officer. Keep me informed."

The communication officer approached the Commodore and handed him another data pad.

<Survey of 19, 04 is underway. We have picked up a single contact on long rang scan. We are requesting orders? Do we break off the survey operation to investigate?>

Please note survey data will be available during Update Assets Phase this turn.

Leaning forward, his crew waiting to hear what they were to do, M'Kee suddenly leaned back in his chair and stabbed the 'DELETE' key on his console. "Ssscrew it," he hissed. "We can't get the convoy there in time anyway. It'sss physssically imposssible. Ssstupid bureaucratsss. Proceed with sssurvey!"

And they did, finding a rather lush system, even as they sent a frigate back to escort the trailing convoys. But farther away, the little Destroyer & Frigate That Could had a scanner contact. Something more than ice, dust and rock was nearby that system.

"Communicationsss," M'Kee rasped, turning his silvery, insectile eyes on the lieutenant at comm. "Have the Fireclaw break orbit and intersssept the bogey at maximum warp; authorization to ussse dasssh ssspeed granted. Have the Pleiosaur continue sssurvey."

Picking at his claws with his teeth in smug satisfaction, he added, "High command wantsss sssingle combat, they'll get sssingle combat. The Fireclaw will kick those Klinksss back to Klinssshai."

"Ensign, redirect our course to intercept the contact. Rely the Commodore's orders to the Plesiosaur."

The Fireclaw's engines picked up, the captain heard an audible hum as the speed increased.

"Attention unidentifed vesssel. Thisss is the Captain of the GFS Fireclaw. You are intruding on Gorn-claimed ssspace. Identify yourssself."

The response was not long in coming.

"Gorn ship, this is Commander Krege of the Klingon Dreadnought
Entropy. You will leave this area of space immediately. We are
operating well within our rights and will destroy any interlopers."

The Ensign at the helm paled, his scales blanching to a chartreuse. "Excrement," the XO said. "Time to retreat!"

"Nonsenssse," the Captain of the Fireclaw hissed. "You don't really think the Klingonsss have a dreadnought out in thessse boonies, do you? I thought about that ploy myssself, but figured it was unbelievable."

"Here. Let me ssshow you," the Captain said, gesturing for communications to put him through.

"Klingon dreadnought, this is the BATTLESHIP Fireclaw, moving to engage. Don't bother to run, we'll only chassse you down and kill you, and you'll die tired."

He gestured for the channel to be cut. "They lie; I lie," he told his XO.

"But sssir," said the XO, "What if they really ARE a dreadnought?"

"THEN we run," the Captain grinned.

"Gorn vessel. My tactical officer informs me that the Gorn have neither the ability nor the will to send a real warship this far from home. I am inclined to agree, but am not one to be agreeable. Therefore he and I have placed a wager as to the true design of your vessel. I plan to get the true nature of your mission once I board your vessel and rid it of any Federation spies."

Klingon player has chosen "Distant".

6 Intensity Points

The Defender (Klingon) chooses not to intercept.

Attacker (Gorn), will you accept a Deep Space Engagement with the Klingon vessel?

OK, this battle was resolved using SFB. Future battles may be done with FedCom or the fast resolution system, but SFB is my game of choice. Note, the FA campaign engine will support both (and Starmada).

So, here's how it went:

We used our usual setup of an 84x60 map, with 10% commander's options. Starting range was about 50.

T1, the Gorn just marched across the map at speed-19 under heavy ECM while the Klingon did a 24/12/24 split to get the Scatter Pack out, blossomed, and recovered. 5 drones inbound! Late in the turn, the Gorn lobbed a G-torp (fake) to keep the F5 off.

T2, the Gorn plotted a 7/4/14 speed split and weaseled off the drones. The F5 came in to r15 for a shot, (2x Disr, 2x ph-1) which rolled crappy. 6 damage total against a 5 point brick meant only 1 shield box down. G-torp impacted for no damage, revealing its psuedo status. There'd be no more scatterpacks - I hadn't realized the F5 only has a single shuttle, which it was now holding for a WW.

T3, the Gorn kept on a steady 14 plot with heavy ECM. Klingon shot at r8 was abysmal (Both disruptors missed, phasers did ok), doing 3 damage - 1 point thru reinforcement, front shield now down by 2 boxes to 16. More drones came from the rack, one late on T2, one early on T3, which the Gorn was able to phaser down.

T4, the Gorn steadily herded the F5 down into the corner. Jeremy managed another oblique shot on my bow, but through a shift, as he had to burn power to keep his speed up and couldn't match my EW. 4 damage was scored, and 2 blocked by reinforcement - bringing my bow shield to 14.

At this point I had the F5 hemmed in to the corner, still holding my plasma, and he was out of running room. Jeremy did have a single weasel, but knew that wasn't going to be enough (because I'm not dumb enough to launch all my real plasma at once against a target that could have a weasel). Wink I had the ability to just run up and anchor him at this point, and 60 points of hot plasma would have crushed his ship. He took the better part of valor and slipped off the map on T5. Otherwise, while my ship would have taken some damage, I probably would have killed or at least severely gutted the F5.
