Among the recent set of arrivals (which I'll mention over in the hauls thread once I get a pic taken) was a copy of CL28; within are a series of ships (and notes about other ships which can be extrapolated from pre-existing SSDs) for the "Paravian Reality", a what-if look at Main Era ships from the Gorns' ancient nemeses.

For those who aren't aware of them, the Paravians are a bird-like species which were a factor in the Early Years. Descended from a colony of Gorns (placed there by a precursor species thousands of years ago) the Paravians saw the fossils of their Gorn ancestors as demons and devils. That made the eventual first contact with still-living Gorns quite a problem. Their ships are fairly maneuverable, at least when their wing engines are still operational; if they lose one or both of them, their turn modes decrease significantly. Instead of plasma torps, they use the quantum wave torpedo; which hits sort of like a PPD, moves like a plasma, and fires every turn. They have a set of Non-Weapon Option boxes, to show the kind of customization each commanding officer would make to his ship prior to setting out on a raid.

Historically, the Gorns managed to blockade the Paravian home world back in the Early Years, only to see it be annihilated when a Sun Snake dove into the Paravian sun in 2494. There is an empire of Paravians in the Omega Octant; by the 2600s, they evolve into a major threat. However, no-one is exactly sure how they got there, or what their ships look like.

The CL28 Paravians are from a what-might-have-been timeline where the Sun Snake, which had historically passed by the Grey Scale Gorn home star in 2470, decided to go and pop it instead. Seizing the opportunity, the Paravians rushed to blitz the other two Gorn home worlds along with every other Gorn colony they could find; Gorn refugees fled to Romulan, Federation and ISC space, where they would (through their continued existence) bring the Paravians' wrath at these empires' doorsteps.

The ships include a few expected classes, from the DN down to the FF, though there is the likes of the Raid Mothership; a dreadnought-sized tug used to support long-range operations against target areas. Plus, there are notes about how to create certain variants from the pre-existing SSDs; for example, the conversion from a CA to a CF is outlined, and doesn't take much effort. (Presumably, a similar conversion outline might make other conversions possible; such as, say, turning a CW into a CWF?)

In FC, the Paravians might make for dangerous foes when pitted against the hated Gorns; plus, in the absence of any "real" SFB Omega-Paravian ships in print, they could even act as stand-in raiders against those empires, too.

Any thoughts?

I have always liked the idea of Paravian (and Carnivon) raiders on the fringe fighting for survival.
