Something I hope to see next year is a more rational distribution of ships in a new series of mid-range "fleet builder" boxes.

Glad to hear that. One of my pet peeves of the previous packaging is that in buying both a Fed Fleet box and the Fed Squad box, I ended up with 2 DN's and 3 BC's. I ...

I can see launching before moving working too. You could put counters beside the target with someway to indicate the strength of the attack. But I have not idea how you will simulate the ability to out run the seeking weapons as you've now lost the info about where it was launched.

I know some ...

I think the rules for seeking weapons in Staramada Nova (and the SFU counterparts) are good and could be adapted to ACTA. They have very minimal book keeping - and frankly ACTA needs some book keeping anyways (whether Mongoose wants to admit it or not). Check out your copy of klingon armada for ...

Plasma by the way is already broken into 3 range brackets due to the energy bleed trait. I would create an energy bleed table and show actual damage points that bleed versus D6 damage. That would bulk up plasma. If a plasma R is 42 damage instead of 7 AD Multi-hit D6, yuo would have to score 42 ...

Glad to see all this thoughtful discussion/debate here.

I really can't get into all 5-6 pages right now, but I'd just put in my two cents:

1) The biggest thing that bothered me about damage in ACTA is that ships easily went from full combat effectiveness to being able to fire almost no weapons ...

My top 3 gripes are:

1) Turn modes
2) Critical hit system has huge impact on DN's and next to none on small ships
3) Needing to make a crew check to use "intensify defensive fire"

I really wish the OCL had the armour trait. IMHO the armour trait is one of the few cool things of ACTA.

Our group ...

There are two pieces of paper for each ship. One is the ship SSD the other is the movement card. Both are well designed to minimize the work it takes to keep track of stuff.

1) AP (action points aka power). Typical ships have from 4 to 15 power (CA's around 8). You have to keep track of how much ...

Squadron Strike - Star Fleet - Playtest Battle Report

Hi All,

Played a game of SS-SF on Wednesday of Klingon vs. Kzinti, as we wanted to see how drones and ADDs would work in a semi-large game. Here's the battle report:

Thanks for taking the time to reply, both. Something that you have to work at between sessions to understand is, realistically, not going to get time in my schedule. When it arrives I shall sit back and gaze in admiration at the achievement involved in producing a 3D version of SFB that is playable ...

I've been playing quite a bit of SS lately. The play aids in SS turn what sounds like a mathematical grind into a very smooth game. It takes some time to get the hang of it (more than one game), but it is well within the realm of most gamers to learn. Once you get the hang of it is surprising how ...

I'm also using the corseceng omni stand system. I much prefer it to the ones they are packaged with. I have the square bases with firing arcs to use with ACTA and the hex bases to use with Klingon Armada.

I just also purchased some corseg bases myself. Since I'm only planning on using these for ACTA I selected the square bases with fire arc markings on them.

If I ever do decide to get back into SFB (or try FC) with these minis I can always order the hex bases.

Hey Bob,

I think overloaded photons might be a bit difficult to employ against the Klingons, but they came in VERY handy in my last game against the Gorn (I was Federation).

For proximity fuse I don't think it needs to be a special action - it should just be an alternate firing mode like a bolted ...

So I guess the CB is going to be 210 points. I have deduced this from the fact that the CC is 205 and the BCJ is 215 pts.

Shock!

Its been years since I played SFB, so I had to dig out the old rules and refresh my memory as to what shock was all about. I was surprised to see that it was basically the same mechanic as breakdowns... that got me thinking.

If a failed HET in ACTA is impulse crits - then it would be easy to do ...
