defensive fire

the question is, can defensive fire be used against fighters or only against shuttles?

Since the Defensive Fire Phase is only for objects that impact during an Impulse, and since fighters don't impact, fighters could not be shot at during the Defensive Fire Phase.

Perhaps the "shuttles" you referred to are suicide shuttles that move as seeking weapons?

Mike is correct. Defensive Fire can only be used against objects whihc have impacted the shields, i.e, Suicide Shuttles.

Fighters (and Suicide Shuttles that have not yet impacted the ship) can only be targeted and fired at during Offensive Fire.
