Miniature finds

Post by Starfury »

I thought I'd start a thread on those rare gems you may find at thrifts, garage sales, and at times eBay.

My past finds: 10 various boxes of Warhammer 40k Marines for $1 per box.

Current: Various boxes of Warhammer 40k Orcs including an army box for .75 to $1.25 per box

Old SFB Minis on eBay: 2 old Fed NCL, Old Gorn DN, Kl F5 and Tug. All are the old packs with the puffy yellow packing or the Starline 2200.

What kind of gems have you found?

I found the old Matchbox 1/72 F-4K Phantom on ebay a couple of weeks ago. One of these was the second model I ever built - years ago when I was about 9 - and I've been after another one for years. Now I have one. :)

Summer '06 I picked up two auctions off ebay --- 68 total SFB minis ---
To include a dozen Starline 2200 Kzinti's with the thin drone arms ---
Over the years picked up multiple sets of used mini's ---

Something within last year or so, picked up 1/2 dozen squadron boxes for 40% off recommended price --- plus another 8 or so over time ---

Over the years picked up 2 dozen or so plastic feds ---

Middle of this month I managed to grab Wings of War set at ----
The three game boxes, 24 aircraft (Series 1 and 2), at about 1/2 of retail ---

Also this spring, through the ADB BBS I picked up the entire FC set up through Battleships from a player who (sadly) had to liquidate his gaming stuff ---

Not too long ago I scored a large (2 dozen+) lot of lead SL2200 SFB minis off eBay for a little over $100. Quite a chunk of change, but it included four of the old-style multi-piece Klingon D-7's I so covet plus lots of other minis to trade.

A few weeks before that, I got a smaller lot of old (Designers Edition) SFB material which also had about a dozen lead SL2200 minis (with two of the SL2200 D-7's) for $10 on Craigslist. Turns out the seller worked in the building next to me and I picked them up on our lunchbreak. I insisted on giving him at least $20. I'd have paid ten bucks a piece just for the D-7's.

Last year, while cleaning out a desk I was moving into at work, I found an old (mid-80's) model kit of an F-20 Tigershark fighter jet. It was tucked up behind the overhead bins and must have been there for at least 10 years (considering the 1/4-inch layer of dust on the box). Checked with management and it was deemed "mine".

Nice find in the desk there, free model! What sort of state was it in, and was it started or what? Good find all the same. :)

It had a bit of assembly done, but nothing I can't undo/salvage/work-around someday.

Couple of years ago, I found an ebay steal. Seems the nice gentleman had misspelled his auction title and I purchased 26 Hdyrans for 15$, plus $4.76 for shipping.

All of it older Starline 2200 CAs / CL/s / FFs / and DNs.

Then last year, one of the guys in our extended group won an ebay auction for 26 pounds of misc lead starships for 75$. Almost all of it was OOP SL2200 stuff (Fed / Klink / Rom / Kzin) and the rest was OOP FASA items, which he turned around and re-ebayed (is that a word?) for over $100. That left him with about 22 pounds of free SFB minis.

There was so much stuff in the load of minis that he gave me 2 B-10s (one to make a B10M and one a KB10R), a pair of Kzin SCS (whihc became a Kzini SSCS adn the Combat Damage entry in the Online Painting Contest), and a few Starbases and BATS.

I might comment that we have the old four-piece D7 masters, and if somebody wants to pay the cost of the mold (which I think is $50) we can spin off as many as you want.

Bummer. I wish I'd known that sooner.
At this point I've actually acquired pretty much all the D-7's I could ever need. But... I'm sure that could change in the future (I'm well on the way to Tony Thomas levels of metal-acquisition).

The thought has occurred to me to propose a new mold using the old SL2200 parts (either partially or completely pinned and epoxy assembled as a master, with greenstuff reinforcement on the underside of the main-hull and engine "wings") for a D-7C (much like the Fed CC got a new saucer with a different look). If it's anything less than $300 I might very well still go for it.

There's nothing wrong with the SL2400 D-7, but the old SL2200 version is a bit larger and has proportions that just work better for me.

You can NEVER have enough D-7s.

Man, now I need to figure out how many D7s I need and if it's worth it. Anyone else need some 4-piece D7's???

Sounds like we might be able to turn this into a gather-support, send checks, steer production to what we want, kind of thing. If SVC wants to deal with the extra hassle.

I just looked around on my desk and found a Slaver, a Gendarme, a commercial platform, and a double raider.
