On-Going Miniature Painting Contests

Post by djdood »

[Admin, please make this a "sticky", so people will continue to see it]

All -

There is an ongoing series of Miniature Painting Contests that runs over on the legacy board in THIS thread.

Entry pictures are emailed in (to graphics@StarFleetGames.com) and need to meet certain formatting requirements (see RULES here).

Contests run by-theme, monthly. All the 2007 contests have low entry-numbers and are still open for entries.

The most recent post with a schedule that I could find is quoted below:

Jan 07 will be Orion Squadrons.

Feb 07 will be “Brothers of the Anarchist, West including captured Lyran, Hydran, Klingon, Kzinti, WYN, LDR, and Peladine.

March 07 will be Hydran Squadrons.

April 07 will be Combat Damage.

May 07 will be Andromedan Squadrons.

June 07 Originally scheduled to be “Brothers of the Anarchist, East including Fed, Tholian, Gorn, ISC, Romulan, and Orion.

July 07 was scheduled to be Lyran Squadrons and I think we may want to leave that alone?

Aug 07 is open. (August has been turned into a "single-ship kitbash" contest).

I don't know how to change something to a sticky; Matt can do it when he gets back.

The contest schedule is kind of strange because while a contest opens for entries in the given month, it doesn't open for voting until one week after we get three entries (and no earlier than the 10th of the subsequence month). And actually, it opens for entries any time, so you can enter the January 2008 contest right now if you want. (Voting for Jan 08 would open on 10 Feb 08, assuming we get three entries prior to that time, and even if we get 33 entries in September 07!)

Jan 07 is Orion Squadrons and has not opened for voting.

Feb 07: Brother of Anarchist (West) has not opened for voting.

March 07: Hydran Squadrons has not opened for voting but may be about to.

April 07: Battle Damage has not opened for voting.

May 07: Andromedan Invaders has not opened for voting.

June 07: Brothers of the Anarchist (East) has not opened for voting.

July 07: Lyran Squadrons has not opened for voting.

Aug 07: Single Ship Kit Bash has not opened for voting.

Sept 07: WYN Squadron has not opened for voting.

Oct 07: Seltorian Squadrons has not opened for voting.

Nov 07: ISC Squadrons has not opened for voting.

Dec 07: Single Ship Open Contest has not opened for voting. Any ship which has not won a contest can enter.

Jan 08: Federation ships (one or more).

Feb 08: Klingon ships (one or more)

Mar 08: Romulan ships (one or more)

That was easier than I thought. It is now "stickied".

Thanks for the "sticky-ification". I had also emailed Matt about that, but it's done now.

The August '07 'Single-Ship Kitbash' painting contest has been re-started, due to issues with disqualified and withdrawn entries. Too many people were voting for entries that weren't even available to vote for anymore, calling the whole voting into question.

The contest has be re-opened, the entries re-numbered, and all voting is starting from scratch.

Do these online painting contests still occur? It looks as if this thread had died sometime last year...

Sorry to say, they have ended.

It was the same three or four people entering all of the contests and the last few barely had any entries...sometimes only one or two.

I wish Steve would restart them, but I understand that he has several other more pressing things to do - as opposed to running a contest that has very little particpation.

Ah, well. That's too bad. I'd love to enter each one as they come up. It's a good way to stay motivated and paint fleets. But SVC's workday is pretty intense. I just discovered his ADB work day blog. I'd rather he spend his time developing sweet games for us to buy and play then him having to mess around with a not so important task.

Maybe someone else could take over the reigns perhaps? Sure everyone's busy though.

One of the problems was that the contests had been running for quite a while, so there wasn't a lot of desire to cover the same ground again. However, there was a new batch of people (like me) brought in by FedCom who had never had a chance to complete and compete with our minis. We're all just starting our first batches of Feds and Klingons, whereas the usual contest entrants had "been there, done that" long ago.
The last year of the contests was pretty heavily focused on things that weren't FedCom relevant at the time (Lyrans, ISC, etc.) and things that won't be for a long time, if ever (Andromedans). Some of the last batch of themes were more newbie friendly but the momentum had been lost by that point.
Like Scoutdad said, the big thing that killed it was lack of entries.

I personally have nearly 150 SFU minis at this point, but since I work in "batches" only 5 are actually "finished" and worth trying to enter in something like that.

ROOKIE!
I have 150 in progress
I need to learn to focus on completing the ones that are started before I let my next, new idea take over and get started on something else.

Hmmm...since there's more "fresh meat" because of FC or because of new models being released...maybe this could be restared, but on a less frequent basis.

I saw the crippled ships entry and I'd love to get a chance to do that one again!

I had fun wiht that one. I had the remains of one ofthe old SL2200 Kzinti Space Control Ships I had cut down to cannabilize to create a Super Space Control Ship... As my wife will attest to, I don't throw away anything lead... so here's the front and rear thirds of a kzinti ship languishing away in a parts bin...

So I found a use for them after all...

although, when I update my website - I need to post photos of them on a background other than red...
