Dal has it right... I just happen to like the checkerboard pattern.

I have an entire troupe of Eldar Harlequins painted in various schemes, many with checks...
I have a captured Rhino APC that has a diamond pattern painted on one side (the other side is a recreation of the frnech impressionist "Girl with Water")...
so, as you can see - I like painting checks and checker-boards.

When Adam Turner designed the covers for Distant Kingdoms and the matching Boosters Covers he decided he wanted to spruce the Wyn color scheme up a little bit and added the "Checkerd Board" High Lights to them. Once again different but not wrong.

As far as painting your own ships, just go with what you like and do not worry about wither or not it will exactly match the "offical" color schemes unless you want them too.
Yeah I figured different players paint different schemes according to their personal tastes. I just ask the question because I'm also into researching the background stories and stuff. Was just wondering if there was something "storywise" to support the checkered pattern. Like, the original leader's family crest/symbol thingy had checks on it.... I don't know I'm just making stuff up. But I'm cool with the origins being, "we thought it looked cool". :D

I don't know how the Wyn ships play, but I imagine adding them to my collection at some point. However, since I'm just starting, I'm still just trying to paint my Feds, Klingons, and Romulans.
