Question on 'Line of Battle'

Post by Kang »

I understand that the product 'Line of Battle' consists of extra Battleship cards and some scenarios.

What I'd like to know is, does it also come with the extra counters to use for the extra battleships?

With all the other Boosters, the counters are already in the master sets. Battleships Attack is no exception in a way, in that it contains two 1/2" battleship counters of each type for most races, but what about the 1-inch counters? There only seems to be one of each per race in that scale. Also the Hydrans and Lyrans have only one 1/2" battleship counter.

So, what's the story, please? Or has nobody noticed, because nobody plays with battleship squadrons? :)

I don't recall the LoB product having a counter sheet, but I could be mistaken.
I also don't know anyone who's ever used two ofthe same races BBs in a single battle - but that could be an artifact of out playing group.
The 1-inch counters for hte Lyran / Hydran Battleships should have been in Distant Kingdoms, since that's the product those ship cards were in...

Hey Tony and thanks for that.

Yes, the Lyran and Hydran 1" counters are in DK as you say. I was just wondering how it all fits in to the product/booster pattern in the way that the other modules do.

For example, if you have Klingon Attack and Boosters 1-3, then you have the cards to play with all your counters from Klingon Attack.

I wondered how that translated from/to Line of Battle.

If I'm not mistaken, LoB is kind of the "odd duck" of the bunch. I don't think the extra BB cards were a part fothe original plan... I think they sorta came in response to a demand for extra ship cards; hence, a disparity between the number of counters avaialble vs. the number of cards available.

Battleships Attack has two counters for each battleship, one for the card in FCBA and one for the card in FCLOB.

There's a scenario in Battleships Attack that uses two battleships on each side, along with escorting dreadnoughts.

Ah, ah, ah - Your "F&E" is showing ...

If it is any consolation, I said the same thing when LoB was first being talked about. And was similarly corrected. :)

I'm actually looking forward to doing the "mother of all fleet battles" someday, once my group has gotten comfortable enough.

I've always wanted to see something ridiculous like each side being 2 BB's, 3-4 DN's of various flavors, a few BCH's, a dozen-ish cruisers of various flavors, and 18-20 pop-cans (for instant kaboom fun).

Even with FedCom rules, this would be an all-day battle, but seing that many minis on the board all at once would be glorious (if anathema to long-time SFB people and downright heretical to F&E folks).

That's funny - I go kicked out of my last SFB campaign for continually complaining about fleets that violated the S8 rules.
The only two guys left in the campaign [Hydrans and Lyrans] are curently fighting a battle that's been going on for over 15 months...
The Hydran fleet was 3 Paladins, two Ulahns, 6 Overlords, a Lord Commander, 4 Pegasus PFT, and more than 5 dozen assorted CA / CL / DW / DD and 25 frigates and scouts + the assorted Stingers and PF's that go with it...
vs.
A Lyran SB, a Lyran BATS, 12 DefSATS, some Phaser-4 Gound Bases, a couple of Orion mercenaries and 42 Lyran Ships + PF's  ...

In one of our previous campaigns we had various campaign rules that sidestepped the S8 section.
As the Klingon player (in conjunction with Seltorian allies) I assaulted the Tholian homeworld with one battleship, 4x dreadnoughts, 2x Battle Tugs, 2x heavy battle cruisers, 14x heavy cruisers, 8x war/light cruisers, 4x destroyers, 3x frigates, 1x PF flotilla and 3x fighter squadrons.

They defended with a plethora of ground-based phaser-4s, along with the SB. Ships were a mishmash of one of the funky battleships, with Archeo-dreadnought, CCs, CAs and lots of smaller ships (twenty in all I think). The Tholians were not being played as a player empire so they had some strictures about how their forces had to be set up, namely it was not late enough in the history for them to have webcasters. Somewhere I have some long shots of the map as we started, and a few of the ongoing action sequences. At one point I had over a dozen pages of drone orders.

Now I'm sure you all thought it took the better part of a year to get this done, but no, merely three gaming sessions of 4 hours each. I think the guys responsible for playing the Tholians simply despaired once the webs started coming down. They did opt for a rather unusual web setup, that they later admitted was a mistake.

After it was done we did feel we had finally reached the upper limit of SFB.

You had Seltorians helping you out, but the timeline hadn't advanced far enough for the Tholians to have webcasters?

It does - and perhaps I'm being picky - but the two counters for each race are in 1/2" size only, but not in 1". This is probably fine because you're not going to be playing a double-BB scenario at 1" scale anyway....

There is one loophole though. The Hydrans and Lyrans have only one BB counter each at 1/2" scale. Perhaps this is because they were in FCDK, not FCBA?

Wrong. There ARE two 1" battleship counters as well. The second battleship counters are not next to the first ones, but are on the rows further down.

Ah, yes. I see them. I stand corrected - sorry!

Are there two 1" counters for Hydran and Lyran BBs as well, though? I couldn't find them in my DK set....
