The Roms are different too. As are the Hydrans.

:P

Though in the cases of both of those races, it's due to the fact that there are multiple hulls for each ship classification instead of the usual one.

i.e. the Hydrans have three Command Cruisers (Lord Marshall, Lord Bishop, Lord Commander), and the Romulans have four (King Eagle, KRC, Novahawk, Superhawk).

Klingons are actually pretty easy. The letter on the hull class gives you a general idea of the size of the ship, and the bigger the number on the hull class the larger the ship is. So a D7 is bigger than a D5. And a D6 is bigger than an F6 because a 'D' indicates a bigger hull than an 'F'. In almost all cases, an earlier letter in the alphabet indicates a larger hull, with the exception being that 'E' hulls are smaller than 'F' hulls.

There are two exceptions to all of the above. The first is the E3 and G2 (I think... I might be confusing the police ship hull class with the gunboat hull class) which both use the same basic hull with a different weapons loadout. But neither ship is in FedCom yet.

The second exception is the C8 and the C9. Both ships use essentially the same hull, with a few weapons systems removed from the C9.

Figuring out Hydrans and Romulans depends, more or less, on knowing the names of all of the ships that both fleets use. There are a few hints in some of the class names, but it mostly requires straight up name memorization.

Hey, if I wanted to confuse him, I'd've pointed out that the Gorn DD is actually a frigate.

Well... it could also be said that the Klingon F-5 is the galaxy's smallest destroyer rather than the frigate it is named. Nothing is ever "hard and fast".
