Shauneroo: Going really well so far. Players have decided to record at the end of the day and play on since they are having such fun.
T2 Imp3 Fire decision is going on at present. KFs have basically turned right and the GRL have carried on straight xpt for the drone-targeted SPAs and the badly damaged stuff, which has also turned right (away from the enemy).
Nofire has been declared. The KFs are launching drones. I'll post this cause the launch will take while and I need to check on the mutton (no, not a ship - lunch!).
Blasted website logged me out and wiped my last Impulse's report.
Several very bad words.
The KFs have turned back towards the base and have the now rather spread out GRL fleet on their arse. Fire this Impulse left an NCC about FF sized and capable of speed 10 next turn. Plasma fodder methinks...
Crippled F5W
Lyran DW went pop as a result of massed rear phasers from the KF fleet
Oh yes - the Assistant Klingon reserved a lot of his fire thinking the KF fleet would turn in, not away. This could be a serious error, or the extra firepower in the second half of the turn will turn out to be reeeeeeally useful. We'll see.
Don't tell anyone, but I can hear the KFs discussing HETing the entire Klingon fleet!
T2 Imp5: about 75% of the Klingon fleet has HETted and is now converging wih the GRLs, who have pretty much moved straight ahead all game, from the GRL port side. This means one of the launched plasma will hit! Is this a unique event in Fed Commander for a plasma launched more than four hexes away?
Ooooh! It's snowing! We're going to be trapped here for a week and have to play to a finish.
End of Imp 5: Looks like the KFs are firing the bulk of their remaining guns at a DW, and the Lyrans are firing back at an E5.
Overheard comment from the Romulan: "Fleet scale is for girls"
By gum, I wouldn't like to do this without our experienced SFB players present: the record keeping on Fire decs is tricky through sheer size and their skills and experience are probably what is allowing this battle to occur. Since dropping to Subpulse movement we're getting through an Impulse in about the time a Duel would get through a turn. Fortunately it's interesting and exciting enough that no-one seems to mind.
Imp 7 Fire Dec: The GRL fleet is doing drone killing. ESGs and phasers have destroyed most drones launched to date. Bit of sniping doing minor internals.
8 Gs and 2 Fs at Range five from the Ist Gen Roms firing at a CS plus some phasers. 7 out of 8 G's hit, Fs miss plus 22 phaser damage: 92 damage!
Turn 2 Impulse 8: Is there anything left to fire? Players starting to look a bit zombified and I'm whipping them unmercifully (perk of the job. There's nothing quite like a well lashed Klingon)
Oooh: SNP caught by three drones and with the BS able to reach it and a few odd phasers....Think that's a popped SNP....Yup. This has made the Fed's day - they were his drones!
...a little later: The players are just finishing writing down the ships (back-up to the photo) and most of the clearing up is done.
Generally, a great success - and all under Squadron Scale. Would Fleet have helped? Yes, probably, in that ships would have blown up quicker and we'd be further through the battle. But the Fleet ships aren't the ones we know and what's the point of having BB only to turn into a CA? In the opinion of all of us, this was fun. We reckon we could get through a turn in an evening. We will see!
OK, who's ahead, the Gorn/Roms/Lyrans or the Klingon/Feds?
(the Hydran and Kzinti were also playing allied ships for their respective allies)
Sir Drake wrote:The Romulan attack on the Lyran held level 6 system was played last night. the fleets started about 45 inches away and headed fairly straight at each other with the Romulans at BLS of 16 and the klingon and Lyrans at 24. the Defenders launched 9 drones at the outside fire hawk on impulse 5 or 6. The Romulans fired phasers at the drones on impulse 7 damaging 3 and killing 3 then went evasive. on impluse 8 the defenders Alpha striked the war eagle in the center of the Romulan formation with disapointing results. The war eagle had it front shild knocked less than half was down due to bad rolls, evasive modifiers, range and some sub par ship stats. that was the end of turn one which passed very quickly.
At the start of turn two the roms finished loading all torps and declared BLS of 16 again, and the Klyrans went with a BLS of 24. it got very interesting here. the Klingons put their 3 E -4s out in a gun line ahead of the rest of their ship as bait for the Romulans figuring they would be ignored and could harras the romulans latter or be killed and the Lyran reserves could be brought in to replace them if they where diroyed. The rest of the Klingon ships and the Lyran started a saber pass. A second wave of drones were fire and the defending fleet focused fire on the war eagle again. the romulans got to close range the the E-4s and gutted 2 of them with directed fire to keep them on the board and in play
the 2nd war eagle took the rest of the klingon ire but manage to stay alive bearly. With the threat of 450 points of torpedoes and romulans with plenty of power and unable to bring reserves in the remaining Klingons and Lyran ships had to flee the table
oh and the battle hawk came on in reseve for the Romulans after the war eagle died and was able to capture one of the drifting E-4s . The Condor hdn tracktored the other and captured it later as well.
The opening of the battle saw the Romulan Admiral Numitor rtex open up communications with the Flagship of the Klyran Fleet, the C-5 refused communications with the Romulan flag officer. At this silent rebuff the Veteran Romulan flag officer opened up communications with the commander of the Senator, the heavy Novahawk Command cruiser. Commodore Sectran, an aggrassive junior officer in the Admirals command staff. and given the right wing of the romulan 1st star legion, was given the go ahead from the romulan admiral to close and destroy the enemy.
the standard make up of a fully operation romulan star legion consists of the following on a border:
1 Admiral
1 DN
2 CC (or flag vessels)
2 division each under the command of one of the two commodores make up a star Legion each divsion will be of 4 ships.
typically each division is composed of:
CC (novahawk, Royalhawk or a KRC)
1-2 cruisers
1-2 smaller vessels
the two divsions are forged together into a fleet of 8 ships the Admiral can command 6 of those at any one time in action the remaining 2 ships are in the fleet reserve.
Unless there is a FLeet Admiral present then the Star Legion can be composed of 2 star legions and this in turn forms a Consular FLeet, with up to 15-20 ships and 3 Divisions.

Here are some notes about the fleet strategies of the various empires, here is the romulan strategem first.
the standard make up of a fully operational romulan star legion consists of the following ship organization.
1 Admiral
1 DN or similar hull value
2 CC (or flag vessels) each in command of one of the two divisions in the Legion, this assumes that the overall romulan fleet is at full strength and can support this many flag vessels. If not then 1 of the CC's would be another cruiser and the 1st division would have the commodores flag and be the primary division, while the second divsion would form the Auxillia of the star legion and operate vessels in single or in squadron formation.
2 divisions each under the command of one of the two commodores make up a star Legion each divsion will be of 4 ships.
typically each division is composed of:
CC (novahawk, Royalhawk or a KRC)
1-2 cruisers (2 cruisers if the division is an auxillia division, 1 cruiser if it is a prime division)
1-2 smaller vessels (we, skyh, seahawk, battle hawk) snipes will not be placed in a Star Legion that is assigend to a war footing, the preferred ships will be Sparowhawks or KR's
the two divsions are forged together into a fleet of 8 ships, the Admiral can command 6 of those at any one time in action, the remaining 2 ships are in the fleet reserve.
Once there is a FLeet Admiral present then the Star Legion can be composed of 2 star legions and this in turn forms a Consular FLeet, with up to 15-20 ships and 3 Divisions.
the romulan fleet conjectural order fo ballte (depending on many things) would be the following.
4 Star Legions 2 each on the Hydran and Lyran Borders
1 home star legion in reserve
total of 45 ships, not including patrol vessels, maruaders, escorts and exploration ships, but including the 5 ships that that serve as the Admirals flagships.
Currently the Romulans have fielded 2 Admirals and 2 star legions, though one of the star legions is at 70% strength, both Star legions currently serve on the Lyran border and are in war footing.

Well, Lord knows if we'll ever finish that battle! I'll try to organise for next Tuesday evening and we'll see what happens. I think everyone's still a bit too gibbered out from Sunday to try anything this evening. I know I am.
A few conventions at this sort of scale might help: One that occurs to me is to say that in fire decisions ships may not split their targeting between opposing ships. Drone defence would not be affected. I suggest this because it seemed that splitting those last few phasers took more time than it was worth.
Pallida: I think that there is a chance that command limits will come into our campaign after this battle. I'll be paying attention to player opinion. I must admit I hope I don't have to put in some sort of rule, but military escalation is notoriously hard for the participants to to control.
I've noted your "reserve" rule. Something based on it might well appear in our rules if we put in command limits.
Palli, Got a question that was brought up at our last game, with Code of War. If a Admiral goes into battle, can he still extend his CR to another battle?
