Recommended Purchases for New Player?

Post by MajerBlundor »

Hello! I was introduced to FC this week and I'm hooked! I've ordered Klingon Border and Romulan Border which should arrive Monday. I know there's a way to order both so as not to duplicate parts but I think the extra map boards should come in handy. Which brings me to my question.

I found the FC catalog VERY confusing! I'm not sure how to go about purchasing the other bits.

Here's what I'm interested in achieving and I'd like to know the best approach.

1. I'd like to acquire one each of the basic ship miniatures from frigate up to heavy cruiser/battle cruiser for Feds, Romulans, Klingons, and pirates with a smattering of civilian ships and a small base for convoy/escort/raid missions. Not really interested in Battleships/Dreadnoughts or big fleet actions. What's the most economical way to do that in light of the packaging?

2. Assuming a focus on small to mid-sized ships of Feds/Klingons/Romulans/Pirates and small scale actions (usually involving civilian shipping, etc.) what are the best expansion packages to purchase?

3. Is there a master/consolidated list somewhere of ships included in different expansions?

Thanks in advance!

For #3, try one of the various Master Ship Charts on the Commander's Circle.

For miniatures a couple of things to bear in mind: 1) Squadron Packs give you the minis to match the ship cards in the Border and Attack sets. 2) Border Boxes give you the minis to match the ship cards in the booster packs. Yes, this is counter-intuitive. 3 booster packs of cards=1 border box of minis. 3) Most of the ships are also available as individuals or in different group configurations from the Starline 2200 and SFB side of the catalog. This can be of use if you only want 1 specific ship mini.

Thanks, the master ship charts were VERY helpful! I've used it as a guide to order a few expansions.

Given my interest in scenarios with civilian shipping the "Orion Attack" expansion was a no-brainer. Klingon Attack and Romulan Attack also included some interesting smaller ships so I've order those as well.

BTW...what's the Base Station (card 79) in the "Tholian Attack" expansion? Based on the PV it appears to be a smaller version of a battle station. Is it armed? It would be neat to have an unarmed station to represent a commercial base (trade hub, mining facility, research station, cargo transfer station, etc.).

You have a pretty good take on what the Base Station is.

In the Star Fleet Universe it's what (temporary) Mobile Bases are upgraded to as a permanent base. Eventually, Base Stations can be upgraded to Battle Stations (but not all were, especially those in the interiors of the various empires).

IIRC, in Star Fleet Battles (the much more detailed, and arduous game), which FedCom is distilled from, there are civilian Base Stations.

A military/governmental Base Station is indeed armed, but nowhere near as well as a true Battle Station and not even remotely as well as a full-up Starbase. An individual roving pirate wouldn't mess with a Base Station and it's typical protectors, but a squadron could take one on and defeat it.

If you want an unarmed commercial base, you will get it in Orion Attack. It is a "Commercial Platform". It is a small base that is, pretty much, just a target.

The Base Station is a smaller base than a Battle Station. It has the same number of heavy phasers (Ph-4s), but fewer systems and other weapons.

I would also recommend the Briefing #1 product. It comes with 24 new scenarios and a very helpful guide for all scenarios published up to that date.

As far as miniatures I started with the same idea of getting one of each basic type. After multiple plays I discovered that you do need to have a few duplicates of the smaller ships (frigates, destroyers) at least, in order to cover / balance a lot of scenarios. Having a single large ship versus two or three smaller ones also creates some very fun two players duels.
