Phasor 1 VS Phasor 2

Post by USS Enterprise »

Why is a Phasor 1, at range 0 with a roll of 6 do 4 points of damage while in the same situation a PH 2 does 5?

I know that the PH 1 still is a lot better as it was meant to be, but if the PH 2 can do 5, why can't the PH 1?

It all goes back to the original game, Star Fleet Battles.

In SFB, the Phaser-1 and Phaser-2 are basically the same unit. The difference is desricbed as being in the targetting array.
The Federation has better technology and can design / build a more precise targeter for the phaser array. This gives you a Phaser-1.
The Klingons, being slightly less technologically competent believe in the brute force method.
Their targeting system isn't as accurate, but when you get close enough - it can blast a really big hole in anything!

That was the basis for the original discrepancy between the phaser-1 / phaser-2 damage chart.

So the fact that the PH 2 is occasionally better than the PH 1 is purposeful?

Sure - otherwise, everyone would always have the P-1 and the poor little P-2 would be left out in the cold... all alone and un-loved...

I thought it was because, due to less tech for the Klinks, it costed them more to build a PH 1.

Well, don't worry - your friends from M31 will be more than whatever-passes-for-being-happy-to-an-Andromedan to continue making use of whatever-it-is-they-use-that-seems-to-equate-to-a-phaser-2 as part of their Milky Way (and Magellanic Cloud) Galactic Tour!
