Tournament Rules Squadron question

Post by DaveP. »

My regular opponent and myself have been using the Origins 2009 Tournament Rules for our regular games for several months now and we've been enjoying them immensely. Does anyone else use them regularly, and do you have any favorite squadrons?

Sounds interesting - are these rules available anywhere on the web site? I had a quick look around and could not spot them...

Here they are:

Our group has been using them for a while as we prepare for the Origins 2010 Tournament. At this time, a Lyran squad or a Kzinti Squad appear to be top contenders.

I've started to use them with one of my opponents, only been doing it for a couple of weeks, but so far its gone well.

I do think it is a far far better game than a simple 1 vs 1 duel.

So far we have been going over the time limit - but we'll get faster as we get used to various things that don't normally come up (web rules etc).

I've noticed that the closed board makes plasma and "big hammer" races more powerful- there's less ability to run away from them- and maneuver-intensive races (Klingons especially) a little harder to win with, for the same reason.

Here's a couple of squadrons I've had some success with:

Kzin- 2 BC, 1 CC: 440 points
This gives you three heavy cruisers, all with the Old Kzinti FA+L/FA+R disruptor arcs plus the ability to launch 12 drones on Impulse 8 of Turn 1, plus another 8 on Impulse 1 of Turn 2 (double drone control on the CC): a 20 drone wave, if you handle it right. Oh yeah, and a total of fifteen transporters... heh.

Feds- 2 CS, 1 NCA: 447 points.
Or you could take two NCA's and one SC, but I like it better this way. Either way, that's 12 photons and a decent power curve.

EDITED to fix error: wrote SC when I meant CS.

SC? Scouts don't have photons.

I find it hard to believe you had any success with this set up.

The BPV for the FED SC in Federation Commander is too high in my opinion. The Fed Com SC sensors are not as powerful as the SFB SC sensors.

How do you come up with 12 photons? The Fed SC has no photons.

SC= CS; Strike Crusier. Sorry- a little thinking backwards there.

Well I thought maybe, after my previous post.

Yes, the CS is more understandable. Thanks.

Hydran Fighter-heavy Squadron:
2 Ranger @111pts. each
1 Mongol @100 pts
12 fighters to split between all three ships

442 points

Some fairly obvious advantages and disadvantages here.
I have only tried this one once, and won by cornering my opponent (who was running Romulans) and mugging him.
