That's why I like mine...

It's a full sized, single mat with width grain. It runs 44 hexes by 30 hexes.

So, you got that from Monday Knight Productions? Was it a custom order, or did you just specify “width grain and they sent it just right? You mentioned it was 4' x 8'; did you mean 4' x 6'? Thanks.

I'm not sure of the intracacies involved in ordering it. It originally belonged to another member of our group and when he moved away and parted with his stuff... I got the maps.

Falconer wrote:Alright. Thanks again for all your help. So, based on the information here, if I were to go with a Hotz Artworks mat to create a standard FC map with hexes big enough to use miniatures, this is what I would need to buy:

Yes, this is correct - I use this configuration with 2" hexes for convention games and multiplayer games at my house. They are very nice.

Okay, some more questions: I bought Module W Space Battle Maps, and also some miniatures. The bases on the miniature are only 1" across, and the hexes on the Space Battle Maps are 1.25". It seems like a map with 1" hexes would work just fine, wouldn’t it? (If not, why don’t the bases fit the map?)

Also, the standard map is currently 42 x 30 hexes, but the map that came with my Designer’s Edition box is 42 x 32, which is weird because the rulebook specifically mentions hexes with last digits of up to 34. Was the original map 42 x 34?

You'll often need room to stack marker-counters for things like drones, etc. on the mini's base. That extra room comes in quite handy at those point. It also helps keep minis be a little less likely to interfere with each other when in adjacent hexes.

Also, remember the Module W maps were designed so the 1-inch Mega-Hex counters could be used with them.
1" squares do not fit into 1" hexes quite as nicely as they do in 1.25" hexes.

Okay, so if I’m understanding correctly, it can be played on 1" hexes, but 1.25" hexes give you more room to breathe.

Anyone know the answer to my other question, about the changing map size?

So, are the hexes on the 1.25" side of the FC Mounted Map Panels slightly smaller than the hexes on the SFB Module W: Space Battle Maps, or are they exactly the same? Just curious. Thanks.

I just got out both sets and measured...

Finarvyn tells me that the Pocket Edition map is 28 x 34 hexes, divided into only four sections (A-D), not six (A-F). Interesting!
