I am looking for a better map. While I like the panels, I think I'd rather have a larger map. I am looking to get a nice one, but, you know, money is an object.
So, I see that some stores still have Star Fleet Battles: Module W—Space Battle Maps in stock for $10 to $15. The description give the sizes, and the hexes are good for using the large tokens.
Does anyone know what the map is like? Is it thick, like the original SFB folding map? Or is it thin?
And what about the planet tokens that come with it? Are they thick like the tokens.
Should I grab it, or should I not? Opinions?

Eric, it's been a long time since I owned a copy of Module W, but IIRC the map is thick and good quality, and the counters are the same as the 1" counters in Federation Commander.

I just bought Module W, so I will try to answer your questions.
Note that the map is divided into 2 sheets. (That may or may not bother you, but you should know that in advance so you’re not disappointed.)ericphillips wrote:I am looking for a better map. Very thick. And glossy.Does anyone know what the map is like? Is it thick, like the original SFB folding map? Or is it thin?
As far as I can tell, the cardstock front and back covers that show planets are “the planet tokens that come with it. I guess you are supposed to cut them out? Definitely not as thick as counters—I’d say it’s at least 110 lb cardstock (glossy), but it’s not cardboard. And what about the planet tokens that come with it? Are they thick like the tokens.
It is definitely worth the $13.95. From what I understand, it is the equivalent of 24 of the mounted panels, which, at $4 a pop, can add up real quick...Should I grab it, or should I not? Opinions?
Eric:
The cardstock in Module W is virtually identical to the cardstock in the SFB map.
I've got several of them, but I modified them and then laminated them to increase their durability.
I have one set that is regular open space...
I have one set that is now an asteroid field...
I have one set that is now "Blackfoot Pass"...
and
I have one set that is now configured for the "Maze of Asteroids" Scenario.
I also have two or three sets that are still un-laminated. When assembled, they provide a "Standard" 42x30 hex SFB layout using the larger hexes.

Actually... My daughter and I finally assembled the 10x4 conference table in the game room last night - so I took a photo of it.djdood wrote:Just another excuse to use that fancy new camera...
But it looked lonely, so I sat up a Fed Comm 3x4 panel map on it...
That looked lonely...
So I sat up a Module W map on it...
That looked lonely...
So I added a second, Mod-W map...
Still looked lonely...
So I added a third map to the table.
Finally - it almost filled the table.
I took some photos and will post them later...
