This has changed so much for me, and I loved reading all the answers (great topic).
I started out playing just Squadron scale (more like SFB to an old SFB player).
I then switched over to Fleet for awhile. Like mjwest's post, I wanted to differentiate it from SFB.
Now I have gone back to Squadron, and usually play Squadron scale. If I am playing with a lot of ships, I will use Fleet again (or if I am really limited on time), but 90% Squadron scale.

Have tried Flt, but this old SFB player likes Sqn. The ships have the right number of guns.
In fact that's the main difference for me; in Flt, once you have shot your bolt, that's it for the turn, or so it feels for me anyway. Perhaps even halving the number of impulses to four would have been an idea for Flt scale, but then of course that would have broken a whole lot more stuff. So, Flt scale works, but I just never use it 'cos the ships don't 'feel' right.
