Rulebook now, or should I wait?

Post by Norsehound »

Hi all.

I'm interested in getting a copy of the Reference Rulebook, but should I spend "holiday efforts" on getting it now or wait for January when a revised book is supposed to come out?

If you are getting it on e23, you can have your cake and eat it, too!

Yup, once you buy it on e23 you get any revisions free. Just make sure you are "logged in" on e23 when you buy it, otherwise it won't become part of your "library" and be re-downloadable forever.

So rather than the book, I should put on my wishlist the ink cartridges and paper needed to print this 93 page monstrosity? Well, it would mean updates come free...

Have past revisions noted which sections have changes or would one effectively need to print the entire rulebook again?

Changes are noted with a star in the newer versions.

In practice, I tend not to refer to my rulebook much, just need to refer to it occasionally for rules I don't use much/am unsure of. For example, web or cloak rules. For that, electronic searching is a blessing.

Edit: If you are going with the hardcopy version, I'd wait until it gets revised again, it should have the Andromedan rules in it in January, as well as the rules for the WYN Radiation Zone.

At some point in a couple of years or more, we will "change editions" and it will become a new document, which you'll have to rebuy the PDF for, but that's not much of a price for years of updates.

Monstrocity? See here, good sir, have you seen the 460 page SFB Master Rulebook along with 300 pages of Master Annexes?

If I order Federation Commander Klingon Border direct from ADB after the updated Reference Rulebook is released in January, will I receive a REV6 rulebook?
EDIT: I seldom post without an edit.

Does this mean that there is a new printed Reference Rulebook coming out soon as well?

We're planing to do the next RRB this month. It's not going to be a "major release announcement" thing, just an evolutionary transition. Anyone who bought an RRB from e23 will be able to download the new one. Anybody who buys an RRB from us will get the new one after the date we do the new one (at least a week away, probably two, maybe three).

Fair enough, thanks Steve. Will the new printed version be available in the UK; are you sending some to Esdevium?

Not unless they order them, which they might. Not sure if they already have some in stock, in which case they won't.

Question:

Will the new reference rulebook encompass anything more than what is in the CRUL? I already have a digitized version (for my own personal use).

Yes, the Rev6 RRB will include more items than are in the CRUL2. The CRUL2 only includes items from a handful of the Communiques after the RRB was released. All of the intervening Communiques have been scanned for additional items, which will be in the new RRB. Also, the new rules from War&Peace will be included (including their line items) and the missing item from Distant Klingons. Plus I hope some "cleanups" (removing of a couple contraditions and some new wordings).

Finally, there are a couple other surprises. :)
