The ships available for download are the same as the ones you buy, except that there probably aren't as many available for download.
If you haven't spotted them all yet, you can down load from
commanders circle has a limited selection
communiques all have few cards in
and
e23 has PDFs of ships you can buy for a modest sum
PS where in the Uk are you, Wales I'm guessing?

Can't remember how it pans out overall to be honest. But as far as I can tell you can ignore the box sets, as the boosters and the communiques give you all the ships, at least for the older box sets. So for example I think klingon border and klingon attack have all their ships either in the boosters or in various Communiques.
That probably doesn't quite work for the later box sets like 'war and peace' or 'hydran attack' where there probably hasn't been time for the some ships to turn up in the free communiques. Though if you get all the boosters and communiques you will probably be missing only a handful of ships.
The free communiques on their own probably give you a pretty wide/good selection of ships without buying the boosters, if as you say you prefer to print out ships yourself anyway.
If you haven't seen it yet, this gives you all the info you need on what ships are where - including which communique it has appeared in if any.
PS of course the box sets had the counters in, no idea what counters you already have.

I'm even more confused 'cuz I didn't know you could buy '[a] pack of 320 counters' - what product is that?
btw, Pobolycwm, welcome to the game and to the Forum!
P.S.: also the boxed 'Border' sets contain the main game charts too, incorporating the sequence of play, weapons tables and damage tables. Having said that, the weapons tables are available for download; not sure if the damage table is....
Charts and other play aids are downloadable from here:

You know when you wake up in the morning and you say Mam i want a Rhinocerous. And she says, whose going to feed it whose going to take it for walks
Assuming you have the latest rule book, and you have counters, then all you really need are some ships, some damage charts, dice and a hex map.
There are plenty of ships you can either download or just print out of the free communiques. Sure, that won't be all the ships, but you'll find plenty enough to play the game. Most of the obvious ships are available free (Fed CA and D7 etc).
Damage charts are here - oops no that is just the weapon charts, I thought the Damage chart was there as well, but it isn't. But the damage chart is in the rule book so you can just print it off.
Dice I assume you have.
Hex maps, either you already have one or you will need to acquire your self. Given the counter you bought, I would think you already have a hex map.

The boosters from a particular product contain the "common" ships from each product--heavy cruisers, light cruisers, destroyers, frigates, etc, while leaving out the uncommon "command" ships such as heavy battlecruisers and dreadnoughts. The boosters also include the bonus cards which are generally command cruisers (slightly better versions of heavy cruisers, but not on the level of heavy battlecruisers).
Most dreadnoughts are available in Boosters #16-18 which are associated with Battleships Attack.
Most battleships are available in Battleships Attack. And you can order the Hydran and Lyran BBs (included in Distant Kingdoms) separately (I did) from the ADB store (item #4105-7), as well as the ISC BB from War and Peace (item # 4108-3-11).
You can also order the "ship cards not in boosters" as spare parts from the ADB store. This will include the monster (if one was included) as well as the "command" ships. Just go to the Federation Commander section, then click on a product in the menu and the click on the "spare parts" sub-menu that appears for that product after you click on it.
