I also agree that it should be 1d6 for shuttle hits always (both offensive and defensive). I would be interested to learn the reasoning behind the decision to make them different.

My assumption about adds killing shuttles that have impacted is bookkeeping -- if you shoot and don't kill it -- you have to maintain a running total on damage --

true, but we were prepared to keep track of that damage before the latest version of the rules, when we'd just be shooting at shuttles with our phasers.

The reason is because Steve thought it worked better that way.
