Foremost Counties' Colors

I can't remember if I've read this elsewhere, or if it occurred to me:

The ships in the Foremost Duchy are painted with a pattern of brown, tan, and black, while the other duchies use solid brown, tan, and well... gray. I was wondering if the counties in the Foremost Duchy might not have had the solid colors back in "The Early Years" when they would have been the whole of the kingdom, and the combined pattern is a more recent unification of their fleets. (It's almost enough to get one to put in entirely too much work coming up with designs with differing amounts of brown, tan and black for each county.) Hmm... five counties, not counting the Homeworld... one or two originals split up?

Any histories from the Lyran exploration of space? Are the farther duchies colonies of specific Foremost counties? Or were the formed by the King? What would happen with new ducal families coming to surpass long bloodlines of established Counts and the like?
